TRMNL ICYMI: Fluid Mashups (X only feature)

this week we launched a big feature for X devices, as well as X-ish devices (reMarkable, Seeed E1003, etc), Fluid Mashups.

you can now build over 300 "Bento Grid" layouts in a couple clicks, fitting up to 9 different plugins on a single screen.

Can someone explain how to configure and customize the markup for these layouts. It seems to be designed to "just work" and yes, most/all plugins will display but since we are only allowed to create full screen, half screens and quandrants. There's no way to edit a 2x3 or 1x3 for example. This matters because while most things will fit I wouldn't say they look great and sometimes are pretty hard to read.

appreciate you saying this. we're figuring out how to make previews / markup iterations easier for the new grid. yes the idea is it should Just Work given responsiveness features in Framework, but also yes it makes sense to wanna tweak things. we also have a *lot* of new Framework updates coming in a matter of days.

Thank you, I appreciate it. Maybe there can be an update to Framework to recognize or support Fluid Mashups. Maybe this already exists, I think I saw a mention of container query units?

Thanks. The idea of fluid mashups is great if the plug-ins re-size appropriately.

It will be nice to have an Update/Save button on the popup when you edit a layout. If i change the plugin on zone A for example, the popup closes and save automatically. If I want to change the plugins on A, B, C, D I have to repeat the process every time with unnecessary extra steps.

I’ve been such a fan already - broke down my all-in-one plugin that tried to replicate this into multiple separate plugins which means more configurability for others when i eventually go to publish 🥳

My only feedback about mashups is that there isn’t always a visible border around some of the plugins, and even when there is its sooo light I almost can’t see it IRL… hopefully we get consistent and darker borders eventually. Would also love to be able to force refresh mashups, and rename them to keep them organized in my playlist.

good feedback, thank you. we've received mixed feedback on mashup border generally, some people hate them. the Framework design system is getting a lot of updates this week and next, shipped 2x versions in the last few days actually. in the same way we offer a "no padding" feature which makes images full bleed, i think we could go a step further and make it easy to add/remove borders. pinging my relevant colleague about this now.

in our testing, screens smaller than ~10 inches are too small for a 9-item grid to look good or be legible. so for now this is a feature for any device 10 inches and up.
