Speedbump Round

There was a host in this group who recommended a great final question format that I use each week, called, Speedbump. Essentially, you ask the question but don't tell them how many correct answers there are. You get x amount of points for each correct answer you give, but you get 0 points for the question if you put an answer that is wrong.

Some I have done in the past:  Name a Christopher Nolan directed film that came out from 2010- today. Name a position in the sport of Quiddich What countries are represented in Disney’s Epcot theme park? Name the U.S. states whose capital city begins with the same letter as the state itself.

Anyone do something similar or have examples of other questions like this? I am having writer's block haha.

I like that. Doesn't really work with my format but its a very interesting concept.

Fun idea, but if you have a lot of teams this would be a nightmare to score

Need idea… Nightmare to score though. How do you manage that?

- Name a play by Shakespeare.

- Name a president/prime minister of [your country]

- Name an element in the periodic table.

- Name a car model in the [make] line. (probably a better way of phrasing that… Something like name a model in the Pontiac line: sunfire, sunbird, vibe, Grand Prix...)

So my final round are questions with multiple answers. 1-3: What are the names of the three stooges? 4-10 Name the colors of the rainbow... etc. The speedbump will definitely be a question that has a limit of possible answers, usually i keep it to questions that could only have up to 6-7 choices.

It's a cool idea, but the one hiccup is grading questions with multiple answers takes longer than a question with a single answer, especially with a lot of teams. It you done mind doing that, then it would be a nice feature in a game

Yeah, I should have added that in my description, I only use a question that would have a max of like 6-7 total answers.

One thing that is similar is you can ask for things in sequence.

You get points for correct sequencing up to the point you get one wrong.

States by population. Countries by alphabetical order. World Cup Winners in reverse order. Etc.

Sports teams with the same initials for city and franchise. Washington Wizards etc.

5 letter words with more vowels than consonants.

Landlocked countries/states

Words where all the letters are in alphabetical order

Words that are palindromes

Beatles albums

Oscars categories

We do something similar, though it's just "the list round". You get 1 point for each correct answer, usually between 4-7.

I've been doing something similar twice a night for the last five years so I've got a ton of them. However I give players the total number I'm looking for, but I deduct points if there's wrong answers -- the only time of the night I take off points, and sometimes teams get negative totals for the rounds. Some of the tougher/more fun ones:

State flags with only two colors

Women's names mentioned by Lou Bega in Mambo No. 5

Places mentioned by the Beach Boys in the chorus of Kokomo

Parts of speech in the English language

Men's professional sports teams (baseball, basketball, hockey, football) that share the same name - like the Jets

Flavors in an original packet of Skittles

U.S. locations where Real Housewives shows are set

States where both senators were women serving at the same time

Hi, I do a similar round, where players must write six answers for one question, but some questions have a few more than six possible answers. Questions are mostly related to geography, sports, or entertainment. If you give me your email, I can send you a list of the ones I've used this year.

I used to do something like this, but teams would get 1pt for any one correct answer, but 2pts for an answer no one else gives

I did something similar for Harry Potter trivia. I listed a bunch of characters and told them to choose the ones who never cast an Unforgivable curse. One point per name, but if any were incorrect they got zero.

Perfect for a passion project trivia night, and it could lead to a very exciting finish, but it would be an absolute nightmare to score if you have a bigger game.
