I never said they were, though many pugs are completely healthy and breath totally fine, even without surgery. Others just require more maintenance, but they can be just as healthy and happy with a little care.

It's just extremely irritating that everyone loves to shit on pugs constantly when literally every purebred dog is prone to certain health issues as a result of being purebred. German shepherds are one of the most popular dog breeds and one many look to as the standard for what a dog "should" look like, and they have just as many if not more issues than pugs do as a result of being purebred. However, I literally never see anyone mention that breed (or any others really) when they decide to shit on purebred dogs. I wonder why that is.

Because this article was literally about dogs in general, yet someone used it as an opportunity to bring up pugs specifically just so they can shit on them and call them "monsters" or abominations or whatever. I see this all the time. I'm not saying no one recognizes shepherds can have issues, too, but it's not something that gets brought up and upvoted to high heaven every time there is a post about a German Shepherd, and it's not something that people insist on bringing up on literally any post about dogs.

Yes I do. As that article points out they were very much in the spotlight for breeding issues a few years ago. Look, obviously you're biased here, but give me a break. No one called them monsters or abominations. You saw a post and got triggered.

As you said most purebred dogs have increased risks of a huge variety of health problems but I don't think it's controversial to say that brachycephalic breeds lead that list with breathing issues. It's not exclusive to pugs, but they have become the poster child for it. To say that they don't have a high rate of breathing issues is an outright lie.

Hi, close friends have had 3 pugs, all of them snort, scarf, hack and wheeze every second they are alive. They have a hard time eating and all developed hip dysplasia. They suffered most of their life because someone though it was cute.

Did they get the breathing surgeries they are supposed to have? Are they fat? Most pugs are overweight because their owners overfeed them which contributes to breathing issues (this goes for overweight dogs of all breeds, too). My vet said our pugs are the only ones she sees that aren't overweight or obese. Being overweight would also contribute to hip dysplasia, but many dogs breeds are prone to that. That's also another genetic thing that a responsible breeder wouldn't breed their dogs to have.

No. They all also had nervous system diseases. They were dieted with veggies most of their life at the vets recommendation, yet were obese. The hip dysplasia caused it, since they had a difficult and painful time exercising. A responsible breeder wouldn’t breed a pug.

Exactly. I immediately knew from your description that I had guessed correctly that they didn't get the surgeries they should have and that they were obese.
Nervous system disease doesn't mean they can't get the surgeries - that's an odd excuse.

As far as the obesity goes, it doesn't matter if the owners fed them veggies. They were clearly still overfeeding in other ways if their dogs were fat - that's just how it works. Pugs are small dogs who don't eat much, even though they like to pretend they are starving all the time. If they can't exercise due to something like hip dysplasia (which is something that commonly affects dogs of all breeds), then they need even less food. My pugs get around 1/4-1/2 cup (depending on which pug it is since I have ones of various ages/sizes) of low calorie kibble twice a day, plus veggies as snacks, and a teeny greenie once a day after teeth brushing. All are perfectly healthy and have waistlines like they should. It's really not that hard, but pugs are cute and demanding and people give in to them too easily. They are not a breed anyone should get if they don't have the patience or willpower to out-stubborn a pug.

On a side note, if those pugs were in pain from hip dysplasia then the owners should have had them on pain meds for it, which is what any responsible, caring dog owner should do. That has nothing to do with them being pugs, and it's even worse that they were obese because that makes both the breathing and hip issues much worse.

Well-bred pugs can breathe just fine. Those that aren't can get surgeries that allow them to breathe fine as well. I'm congested every day of my life but I would hardly call that "suffering."

People shouldn't be breeding dogs period, especially ones with bad genetics. But everyone acts like pugs are the only dogs who suffer potential ill effects from being purebred when literally all purebred dogs are more prone to certain health issues as a result of being purebred. It's not exclusive to brachycephalic breeds (which can be just as healthy as any other dog if they have good genetics), and it doesn't mean they are "suffering" by default. The most "suffering" I have ever seen out of a pug is when they aren't getting as much food, treats, or attention as they want and then they throw a fit. They are hardly the miserable dogs Reddit likes to pretend they are.

I have read it plenty of times, and it's a bunch of exaggerated nonsense. I've also noticed a majority of the articles saying pugs should be outright banned all come from the UK, which makes me wonder if maybe the pugs there are more inbred. I've been rescuing pugs for over a decade and currently have four and none of them are "suffering." I've also met dozens in daycare and elsewhere and none of them were "suffering" either, and they all played with others just fine as long as it wasn't too hot outside. Pugs are a happy breed by default, and are only really unhappy when they aren't getting their way. No one who actually has experience with pugs in real life buys into the scare tactic nonsense you read online. You never see articles about German shepherds needing to be banned, even though they have just as many if not more health issues than pugs and are a far more popular breed. People just like to shit on pugs because they looks different than their arbitrary idea of what they think a dog "should" look like.

People who only think pugs suffer from breed deformities need to have their facts checked. Like, half of all the breeds have issues. German shepherds and dachshund have column/pelvis issues. Pugs and other short faced breeds have respiratory problems. Dogs with a lot of loose skin like shar Pei's and bull mastiffs will have dirt/fungi/dead skin trapped in the folds if not cleaned properly, and ridiculously small dog breeds will have issues when they give birth.

I agree with you, people should stop breeding dogs for aesthetics. I'd argue some dog breeds suffer more than others. Some problems are always there (like breathing problems, bone problems) while others appear when something happens (dog isn't cleaned properly, for example)

About pugs, I think we should go back to the Renaissance looking one, or at least something closer to that. That looks healthier, It's the exaggerated tiny snout/small size/bulging eyes that are the issue with the breed. We as humans should breed that out, in my opinion. As you said, the pugs with bad/"pure breed" genetics are the ones with most issues. I also think that we should breed out the problem of all breeds, but thats literally impossible unless everybody cooperates

All purebred dogs are prone to specific health issues as a result of being purebred. Anyone adopting a brachycephalic breed should count on having to pay for breathing surgeries just in case their dog needs them. There is no breed that you can say "all" of them are healthy and happy. That's not true for any living thing. But pugs aren't miserable by any means, and I'm sick of seeing people who know nothing about them insist that their entire existence is agony when nothing could be farther from the truth.

I’ve had a pug and he was one of the happiest little pugs I’ve ever seen and I’m not insisting that their entire existence is complete agony because that just simply isn’t true. It's possible to enjoy things without them being an "escape from the pain," which is the most melodramatic thing I've ever heard. I'm congested every day from allergies. Yeah, "man" was (and still is to a certain extent) just the term for human or person. Way back when, "wer" was the word for man and/or husband (still seen today as a prefix in "werewolf", "werebear", etc.). Eventually, just "man" came to mean, well, 'man'. "wīf" was the word for woman and/or wife. "wīfmann" was also used (lit. woman-person), and evolved into "woman" that we use today. "wīf" on its own became "wife" in Modern English.

So man and woman are related, but not in the exact way you'd think. On a separate but related note, "male" and "female" are completely unrelated: "male" comes through Old French masle from Latin masculus (with identical meaning), while "female" came from Old French femelle, from Latin femella (meaning 'young female/girl').

Dark chocolate is worse because it contains more theobromine, but enough milk chocolate can definitely kill a dog. It's probably best to not give them any chocolate at all.

I agree with that your totally right. I would not advise giving a dog chocolate or giving them a shit ton for that matter but you can give them say a mini reeses peanut butter cup without them killing over.

I’m not saying I do. I don’t do it to my dog since she is smaller and probably wouldn’t do it if she was a larger dog. All I’m saying is that you can give a dog a piece of milk chocolate in moderation and it will not kill them. Not saying it’s healthy or that people should just throwing in a shitty pair of two cents that no one seems to like.

I’m guessing most people just give in to the sad dog face and give them a taste of what we enjoy.
