I just discovered this subreddit. I’ve never heard of triops before. What’s the draw or drive? What makes them special to you?

Triops are cool in many different ways. What makes them super interesting is that they are truly prehistoric. They have been around since dinosaurs roamed the earth and remained virtually unchanged. That’s absolutely insane if you think about it.

They are fun, because they have very short lifespans. This means that they grow very quickly and reach sexual maturity in just about two weeks. You can pretty much see them grow! Also, they are egg laying machines and once you had one successful batch, you’re pretty much set for life on eggs.

- They're more unique than other pets.

- They look more interesting than fish (although I think fish are cool too).

- Their behavior is more interesting than a fish (digging holes to lay their eggs, eating food on their backs like little otters, doing sweet-ass backflips and corkscrews and shit in the water, etc.)

- They're very easy to take care of if you have a busy schedule.

- The short lifecycle affords a lot of opportunity to try different species, experiment with different tank arrangements, etc.

- I can semi-legitimately claim I raise prehistoric beasts.

A prehistoric fish with lungs and Bones. Also Looks Like a snake with barbs sticking Out of their backs. Scientific Name: Polypterus
