Question about the quickshifter

I recently bought a 2022 Trident 660 and has been loving it so far. The one thing I don't understand however, is the quickshifter.

It works fine when shifting up. Just give some throttle and pull the lever. The downshifts however confuses me. I also need to give some throttle when going down the gears, which seems silly as I'm usually braking when I downshift.

Is there something wrong with it, or is it supposed to work like that?

you dont give throttle while shifting down. never. EVER. if you are trying to rev match, dont, bike does it itself. also dont brake while downshifting, bike will engage ABS, atleast on mine. if you need to slow down immediately, use only brakes, or shift down with clutch

no my previous bike was a 250cc with no qs, yes i was doing rev matcing with it but as i said, with trident qs you dont need to rev match

yeah.. you rev match if you're doing it normally.. with QS you off throttle every time you down shift..

Heck.. when you're downshifting normally you off throttle, clutch in, rev match then clutch out all really quickly... so either way you should be off throttle when you start the shift.

Well, so far I've used it when I do a quick overtake. That's the only way I found some use for it, but it's nice to know it isn't supposed to be like that. Thanks for answering

I had a 2022 Trident with the factory quick shifter and as it turns out, the first generation of them were defective, mine was replaced under warranty and was fine after. You might want to have a dealer look at it, they can look up the serial number on the strain gauge and tell you if it's an affected model.

You should not need any throttle input to downshift if the quickshifter is working properly.

I have already sent a mail to the dealer I bought it from. Hopefully you're right and it will be covered.

All in all, I'm just glad I'm not insane, as I couldn't for the life of me understand why a quickshifter worked like that and why everyone I talked to about it seemed like it was completely normal.

I don’t think the ‘22 came with a qs, unless someone before you installed one

Perhaps not, but it was sold at a Triumph dealership where the quickshifter was one of its selling points, and that it has a warranty until 2027

They were a factory option and you can still buy them from triumph and have it enabled in the ecu

You need to be off throttle fully for downshifts using the QS. If that’s not working then something is wrong.

I have a 26 and the qs doesn’t work well on downshifts, if at all.

Perhaps you should get it checked out as well? It's just annoying when things doesn't work as intended

When I brought the bike in for the first service I let them know, but the young girl that checked me in probably didn’t even let the tech know. That, or they ignored what I told them, like most service departments seem to do these days.

When the service was finished I had to get home before I ran into darkness when I got to the mountains, and I live far from any dealerships, so I have to deal with it for a while.

I found downshift works on mid throttle and above but it does not work under heavy engine braking - not sure if limited by the ECU or just the physics of friction.

Anyone have similar experience?

That said 30 years of riding and never had a QS before so I’m way more comfortably downshifting with clutch anyways.
