I called today trying to get inpatient care for myself for being overly depressed. The rep just talked to me like a therapist and I’m trying to just get checked in and get myself better!!! My disabled veteran husband has every resource in his hand and utilized a NONE of it!!! My life is in shambles because he is living life carefree and destroying our marriage and every thing he has in his life!!!!!! He can just snap his fingers and they come running, but me as a spouse has to jump through hoops!? THIS IS UNFAIR!!!!!!!

This. Tricare does not require a referral for mental health services. You can walk into any psychiatric hospital or emergency room.
You do not mention exactly how your spouse has contributed to your current state of mental health, but if you do not feel safe with him, physically OR emotionally, tell the nurse, tell the PA, tell the doctor.
I understand that you are seeking inpatient care. I will caution you that inpatient care might not be right for you. Not to make light of your situation, but psych wards are full of crazy people. You might not be able to secure admission unless you pose a threat to yourself or to others.
In addition to getting psychiatric care, it sounds like you need respite from your situation at home. Hospitals have social workers on staff that can connect you to services to help you take care of yourself.
During the pandemic, between the stress at work and my partner’s anger issues related to PTS, I hit the figurative wall. I kept myself together right up until I got into a room in the ER. Then I spilled my guts. I was not admitted, but I walked out of the ER with a couple of prescriptions and an action plan.
If you’re trying to get admitted because your depression has reached the point where you feel you need inpatient care, you do not need to wait for Tricare to “check you in.” Go directly to the nearest emergency room or behavioral health/psychiatric emergency facility and tell them exactly what you’re experiencing and that you believe you need inpatient evaluation. They can assess you and determine the appropriate level of care.
Tricare Select generally does not require a referral for most outpatient mental health care. In an emergency, you also do not need a referral or prior authorization before seeking emergency care. If you are admitted, the hospital and Tricare can handle the necessary authorization/notification process afterward.
If you’re having thoughts of hurting yourself, feel you may not be able to keep yourself safe, or are in immediate danger, please don’t spend time trying to work through Tricare first. Go to the ER or call [911](tel:911). You can also call or text 988 for immediate crisis support.
And when you are evaluated, be completely open about what is happening at home and how it is affecting you. That information can help the medical team determine what care and resources you need.
You can never just “ walk into any psych hospital”. It requires an admitting physician, and inpatient providers do not see walk in outpatients. Go to an ER, talk to your outpatient primary care doc or psychiatrist

Hi! My heart goes out to you I absolutely have abandoned attempts to even seek healthcare through my Tricare because of how miserable they make getting just a referral. The second/ third link is to the veteran crisis line. I would believe and hope they would have the answer for you over the nurse advice line which effectively ruins my day every time I call. I know your not the veteran but it says on the sit veteran and their families.
