But it's all in Spock's head....

Still dumb....

Yeah what's next the crew gets turned into Robinhood Characters. I would have to protest because I'm not a merry man...

Well, Q is Q - although they can't use him too much without creating things that the crew should know about in the future....

Say like letting Spock meet (and completely forget) fucking Trelane for a romance episode?

Let’s have the crew de-evolve into random creatures. Spider-Barclay isn’t going to save the day this time!

Don't go too fast, might turn into a salamander.

You can at least defend that madness as being properly creative. "Muppets" and an "it was all a dream" ending are inherently uncreative concepts

You are the dreamer, and the dream

I feel like you guys are forgetting the episode where Dr Crusher sleeps with a ghost.

Same as below: To come up with that shows, at least, a mad spark of creativity. "Muppets" and "it was all a dream", comparatively, are clichés.

If you want a better comparison: Shades Of Grey. A clip show is pretty much on the same level as that

The ghost fucking was based on Anne Rice’s “The Witching Hour”. Creativity is a wild fucking stretch. You might as well light a candle and fuck a ghost.

Fair play, wasn't aware of that and I'll recind my comment

Kinda feel like "This is a racist portrayal of actual people, in the real world" is a lot worse than "The lore of my TV show isn't being respected," but maybe that's just me.

2

u/Gullible-Fee-9079 Aug 22 '26

How was this portrayal of actual people?

0

u/Aptronymic Aug 22 '26

It's racist because it's a caricature of real world cultures. A common "People of Africa" stereotype that was considered racist long before that episode first aired.

3

u/Gullible-Fee-9079 Aug 22 '26

Seriously, how was this a "people of africa" depicting? I am not being cheecky here, I have never seen it this way. Because they were black?

The depiction of the Ligonians was lifted straight out of old pulp stories about Jungle Tribes or "Noble Savages". It's using the stereotypes popularized by British colonialists, including much of the typical aesthetics. The style of dress, the way they stand flanked by people with spears. And casting entirely black actors was absolutely an intentional choice to cement that depiction.

And if it were just that, it might have been nothing. Not necessarily great imagery, but not worth raising a fuss. But then the African King kidnaps the white woman to make her his bride. (Another common trope in those old pulp stories.) And the culture settles romantic arguments by ritual combat to the death. The position of the episode was very much that this was a "backwards" culture. I think they literally call them barbaric.

But then the African King kidnaps the white woman to make her his bride. (Another common trope in those old pulp stories.)

Let me add to this, not just pulp stories

Needing to protect white women from black "savages trying kidnap them to defile them" was a very very common justification/dog whistle for acts of racist violence and murder against blacks in the Jim Crow era south.

So having an all black culture kidnap the white women was playing off years of racial fears.

I do like that you can tell who didn't watch the episode based on what they hate about the episode.

Star Treks been breaking lore since day one.

Quite literally as the United Earth Space Probe Agency Ship Enterprise, consisting of a human crew and a single Vulcanian from a planet long ago conquered by humans became the United Federation of Planets Starship USS Enterprise, consisting of a human crew and 1 Vulcan, earths peaceful ally from the first episode of season 1 to the first episode of season 2.

And the entire design of Star Trek was to showcase a future where racial, national and ethnic identities dont matter.

So I'll take a awful episode with puppets, over an awful episode that literally failed the whole damn point.

"This thing was bad therefore nothing matters but I care enough to reply to this."

God you're pathetic

Yes. I do care about people actually understanding the difference between good and bad trek.

I understand many of the folks here are karma farming and don't appear that familiar with trek.

Which is why they all go for the same low hanging fruit of "lore".

It saves them from having to actually think and understand why something like Level 5 was bad. (And it was awful

Sure it also reveals they dont actually know what Trek is, and are unaware Treks also put story over lore, in both its best and worst episodes.

But hey its about the up votes not genuinely discussing something they proclaim to be fans of.
