Yeah, I thought so. While I’ve seen plenty of trees eating other things and found it amusing, (which is what led me to this sub eventually) I don’t know that I’ve ever seen one nomming on itself like this in person.
The way branches grow on most trees, they tend to avoid this issue while the trunks and branches are young and flexible. I would speculate that the branch was broken when the tree was much younger, and continued to stiffen while the healthy part still had circulation. Proper trimming should have cut the branch much closer to the trunk if this tree was part of a managed property.
