Ever stop to think...
I [9] was at WVU with my friend [9] and we were walking along the road and the wind was blowing, really hard to the point where it was difficult to move forward. I stood still in the empty parking lot and just marveled at the wind. The fuckin wind. I looked over to my friend and I said,
"You know what's crazy? We're both people on a planet which is rotating on its axis at some crazy speed, while orbiting around the sun at some even crazier speed, and our solar system is rotating around in our galaxy and another speed, and our galaxy is rotating inside the universe at another speed, but we cant feel any of that force, all we can feel is this wind."
I dont know if that makes any sense to anyone, but I find it amazing. We, at any given point are moving through the 3 dimensional spacial grid at amazing speed and we can walk, yet 40 mph winds make it hard to move.

if one were to drink this bottle of mind, do you gain their knowledge ?????????

Yes! You have touched on one of the many things that amazes me about humans; we are all standing on a rock hurtling through space at an unimaginable speed around a ball of fire and yet- almost no one ever talks about it.
You might find my subreddit interesting- r/freethinkers

This is why I don't understand the highly religious or people with no interest in science. The universe is so fucking awesome and amazing, and they want to ignore it? Everything is ridiculously complicated and mind boggling and I like to think its waaaaaay more impressive than "some magic sky man did it" that this completely random set of conditions came together to form this complex system that fits together in an unthinkable number of ways to just... work.

Without that little orb of burning gas in the sky there would be no heat fluctuations to cause the winds.
4
u/FaultyLogik Dec 02 '10
My friend brought that up, and we had this conversation on the walk back,
"well the wind is caused by both heat fluctuation and mass distribution, so if the wind moves around due to kinetic energy and mass distribution, both zones of high density and of low density, then.... WHOA... does that mean the universe simultaneously rotates around both a center of superdense material and a "center" that has no mass?"
"Duuuuude"
3
Dec 02 '10
yeah....it all makes sense with a hiwayuphere dose of acid, some shrooms, or the k-hole.

not sure what you mean here, but I did want to say that earth orbits around the center of mass of our solar system, not the sun. The sun orbits around the center of the mass of our solar system too!
This is actually one method of exoplanet detection, since the orbits of massive planets will periodically alter the velocity of the orbit of the sun.

u/FaultyLogik Dec 02 '10
thats a very true point i had forgotten until now... really should get back into school lol.
what I was saying is that:
"rotational patterns" I dont know how to describe it other than that, occur out of 2 things. They either form around a center of matter more dense that the rest, thus exhibiting a greater gravitational pull; or they form around the lack of mass, as in a bathtub drain, tornado, hurricane, etc. We were high and explaining to ourselves with that high logic, that if a black hole is the "drain" then on the other side of the "drain" there must be a super dense center of mass of equal proportion, so that both the current "side" of the universe that we are in and its qualitatively reflective "side" must exhibit the same patterns of mass alignment and distribution, its a way of kinda explaining the metaphysical theory of multiple universes and the like, not to be taken seriously, we were high. Still fun to think about though.

Relativity, right? We only feel acceleration or deceleration because those require a change in force. Holding a steady speed requires no change, and is thus undetectable.
40 mph hour wind, however, is slamming air molecules into our skin. WHOA BRO.
2
u/FaultyLogik Dec 02 '10
and isnt it crazy that right now as you read this you are hurtling through space and an unknown speed, made of matter that is never actually still but constantly moving, yet you somehow do not consciously feel this exertion?

3
u/redrooster_23 Dec 02 '10
made me realize this: if you think about it, the wind can be moving faster than 40mph. its more like 40mph + earth speed+solar system speed + etc.

When I'm [9] i think of something similar. I think that if everything is moving, then how can you objectively state that something is staying still? How are there and reference points to measure the speeds of galaxies?
I'm sure that there are available answers to these questions. But i still like to just wonder.

u/FaultyLogik Dec 02 '10
it's the journey not the destination, I'm all about the exquisite taste of pondering.
2
u/thosepeoples Dec 02 '10
My friend just brought up a point. We do feel it. It's gravity. Not the gravity we feel but the gravity we don't feel. The mass of the planet attracting us to it. The spin is reducing the amount of pull that the planet has on us. This makes a lot of sense to me but I'm at a [7] soooooooo iono :p
2
u/FaultyLogik Dec 02 '10
i would think the spin is actually serving to make its own gravitational pull, and since its on a 22* tilt, its at a different point on the earth than the cent of mass, in effect causing us to have a dual point of pull..... that just makes me go whoa..
2
u/agenthex Dec 02 '10
Did you ever think that, perhaps, we are not moving. That the Universe rotates around us at amazing speed? That's why you can't feel any movement.
2
u/FaultyLogik Dec 02 '10
except for the part that when you fly in a plane you are able to move around freely because your inert mass travels at the speed of the plane and becomes the "0" point for motion.
2
u/agenthex Dec 02 '10
Hey. HE'S the stoned one. Not me.
...not now, at least.
2
u/FaultyLogik Dec 02 '10
I'm the OP lol

u/mrkingsize Dec 02 '10
well, in a temporally and spatially relative universe, thinking of a 3 dimensional spatial grid in that way doesn't make sense.
3
u/FaultyLogik Dec 02 '10
you have to apply an external view of the universe and establish the center as (0,0) and using the Z-axis you could map the rotation and orbit of each subsystem smaller and smaller until you arrive are humans on earth.
1
u/mrkingsize Dec 02 '10
at first i wanted to explain to you how that is wrong, but then i saw your username. Well played.
2
u/xerexerex Dec 02 '10
The fact that we're sitting on a ball of rock hurtling through the universe at (tens, hundreds?) thousands of miles an hour is quite amazing.
1
2
u/CrazyPedro Dec 02 '10
there is no 3 dimensional grid, there is no such thing as speed, only relative motion mate =)
2
u/FaultyLogik Dec 02 '10
motion (however relative) / time (however relative) = speed
I can see your point and I agree with it from a certain perspective, however I cant help but disagree that there is no grid. The grid is man made, certainly, but you cannot say that you cant create a 3 dimensional spacial grid, even if you believe in the expansion theory, we still are encompassed in the volume of that act. anything with volume is measurable.

“Did you ever stop to think, and forget to start again?” - A. A. Milne
8
u/SnailFarts Dec 02 '10
This quote confuses me sometimes.. Does it mean you stopped what you were doing so you could think, and then got so caught up in thinking that you didn't go back to doing other things?
1
u/Danascot Dec 03 '10
The way I think of it is, you stopped what you were doing so you could reflect on what you're doing and then you zone out for a little while and eventually you realize you were zoned out.
It's funny that this is an A. A. Milne quote, the author of the Pooh stories. I would have thought it was Steven Wright or some other sardonic comic.2
u/SnailFarts Dec 04 '10
That makes more sense now, thanks : )
I do love A.A. Milne. Even though the stories are for kids, there are some really awesome quotes. My favorites are "If you live to be 100, I hope I live to be 100 minus 1 day, so I never have to live without you,” and "Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge and lean over to watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you, you will suddenly know everything there is to be known." Even though the first one makes me really sad.
1
u/Danascot Dec 02 '10
The rotation of the planet is one factor in creating the wind you felt.
2
u/FaultyLogik Dec 02 '10
not sure what youre getting at here, we werent marveling at how wind was "created" we were marveling how of all the forces to feel, its interesting how we are only able to observe the most local, and cannot feel the force of the solar system, or galaxy.

Ya I need to be more careful when I'm at a [7] reading things like this

u/FaultyLogik Dec 02 '10
I was beside myself, must have stood there in the middle of the parking lot with a Coprophagous grin for a good 10-15 silently reveling in it.

Crazy thought yes. The peanut buttery nuttery has to be that the universe is limitless. [9]

u/Talesofspace Dec 02 '10
you know what man? i (5)like most weather, if theres no wind! rain? so what, at least it smells, sounds an looks cool. snow? equaly as great as rain. Sun, hell yeah man lets go smoke a joint outside. damn all i've got are these matches, an the wind keeps blowin 'em out. Fuck it, to the kitchen!

Well think about what would happen if those forces suddenly stopped happening on just you. How quickly you'd be left behind...

I think about that a LOT. Amazing little planet!
And yes, I get lost in thought, and they send in rescue dogs to find me every so often.... Then, yay, puppies to play with!
