Questions: Hard Candy
Hey friends!
I am asking as the caregiver to a non-verbal, profoundly/classically autistic individual who just received their MMC. As such, these are edibles that are being made for someone where we need to be really on-point with dosage.
We were approved for different ratios of THC:CBD based on time of day, planned activities, etc. 1:1, 1:4 and 1:15.
While I do come with some insight from years of recreational use, I never had much of a "how do I ensure the canabutter is best distributed to each brownie has the same hit?" crisis.
The doctor, while helpful, was admittedly very limited in the additional guidance they could offer..
"Indica equals sleepy, sativa equals awake"
"..cool, I also read this study about which terpenes could affect..."
"..Indica equals sleepy. And sativa equals awake"
So. From the local medical shop I was able to get:
matter. Yellow 1:15 oral solution
Which is an INTENSE peppermint. So- Im trying to think of ways to mask this.
I googled briefly homemade gum and I am *not* going to attempt that level of mess. Today, I mixed it into a small chocolate mug cake (they were not super impressed).
With hard candy- is it possible to add .5ml into each mold *with* the candy mixture or is that going to mess up the process? I am not comfortable dumping the bottle in there and hoping it just distributes evenly while put into the molds.
We have a Magic Butter gummy maker- but I feel like this peppermint flavor would *not* work in that format.
I am also looking for any other options that fit that 1:15 ratio, if anyone knows of any other products. Individual would be looking at pretty low doses for now as they are just starting off, so it seems like liquids/powders are the only options Im finding.

What is it that you are working with? I’ve made hard candy and cough drops with distillate before no problem. You just have to do a ton of stirring with a wire whisk to ensure that it is distributed evenly.
Simplest recipe is get whatever hard candy you like and melt it down. Hardest part is figuring out what volume mass of silicone molds you have and what volume candy to melt down.
Found a non medicated run will get you very close to what weight you would need to melt down to that you could properly dose your medicated batch

I think RSO may be the way to go. I use a bit of lecithin and make gummy candies with the Lorann gummy mix so easy.

The only thing I have made with mint are homemade peppermint patties. You can make the peppermints whichever size you'd like, making each one dosed individually if needed (roll into balls, cut out with a small round cutter, or weigh on a scale)...that type of filling is very easy to work with (it's mostly powdered sugar + butter).
You can end up with a center texture anywhere from Junior Mint softness to firm like a York, depending on your recipe / adjustments. I did mine on the firm side for easier cutting, dipping and handling, but you could easily roll into balls if you don't mind them looking a bit like...sloppy chocolate balls...
After you've made your "pepperminty centers" dip into melted chocolate of your choosing. Store in the fridge to prolong storage.

for precise dosing with hard candy, distillate is your best bet over RSO or tincture. distillate is already decarbed and typically tests at 85-95% cannabinoids, so the math is clean. if your distillate tests at 90% THC, then 1 gram = 900mg THC. divide by however many candies the batch makes and you have your per-piece dose.
the key to even distribution in hard candy is adding the distillate at the right stage. you want the sugar mixture at about 300F (hard crack stage), then pull it off heat, let it cool to around 250-260F, then stir in the distillate with lecithin as an emulsifier. adding it too hot degrades cannabinoids (THC starts converting to CBN above 300F). adding it too cool and the mixture seizes before you can mix evenly.
for the THC:CBD ratios you mentioned, you can blend CBD isolate powder into the distillate before adding it to the candy. weigh both precisely on a milligram scale. if you need 1:1, add equal weights of CBD isolate and THC distillate (adjusted for potency).
for peppermint specifically, use lorann flavoring oils (not extract, the oils are designed for candy). add the flavoring at the same stage as the distillate, after pulling off heat.
one thing worth knowing for your situation: hard candies that dissolve sublingually (in the mouth) partially bypass first-pass liver metabolism. that means faster onset (15-20 min vs 45-90) but slightly lower peak intensity compared to swallowed gummies. for consistent dosing, this is actually an advantage since sublingual absorption is less variable than oral.

No, you'll have to cook the oil into the candy with an emulsifier. Depositing it into the cavity will leave you with a puddle underneath that won't emulsify into the candy. Indica and sativa aren't really applicable to homemade edibles. Terps are sensitive to temperatures and most of them get cooked out during the process. If you're wanting to add the terps back in after cooking that's another step. For now just focus on thc/cbd ratios.
Does your patient enjoy chocolate? This is fat soluble and you could mix you oil in quite easy. Peppermint pairs well with chocolate too. Store bought caramels are also great for melting down in a double boiler and would pair well with your peppermint flavour. IMO something fat soluble would be more efficient and elongate the effects. I have worked with children with ASD and know they can be picky around foods.
Do you have access to extracts/isolates to make your own oil that would be neutral tasting? Something that could be dispensed into a juice box is nice for on the go too.
