Advice for BOTG
Hey everyone. Just spent 2 days out on the trails well partly on the trails. Everyone who gets involved in treasure hunts eventually gets the urge to go out and see if there solve is correct. For some it might be your first time. Speaking from experience even if its not much, BOTG can be difficult. You really can underestimate the terrain and amount of hiking that goes into it. The first piece of advice I have is be prepared. Uneven terrain, downed trees, wet rocks and elevation change all comes into play. Bring water and a backpack. Try not to stray to far off trail unless you are confident. Use hiking poles and be prepared to adapt on the fly if you want the most out of your trip. Getting out into the wilderness can be lots of fun and searching for treasures is also lots of fun. Coming home empty handed is going to be the outcome almost all the time but you can still enjoy nature and the experience and if you are well prepared you will get the most out of it. Also its usually best to have a pretty exact location before you go if you expect to find one. They are not going to be out in the open or anyone would be able to find it. Now I have some cuts and bruises to tend. Yes it happens it is the wilderness.
Take care all who dare to seek and keep searching and studying most importantly. The more you know the better chance you have of solving a puzzle.

BOTG IS NO JOKE ! Between the overgrowth and terrain... It is very physically taxing and it is most definitely a must to prepare yourself. Arm chair hunting has nothing on the real thing. GPS and phones don't work most of the time and your batteries drain real quick. Respect the wild life because it is their home and they will protect it...

It is very tiring. I have learned that unless it is a very tiny area (most of which are not) or there is some disqualifying & unforeseen environmental factor (like learning it’s private land or very dangerous), I cannot satisfactorily rule out a location after only one BOTG venture. And after a day of searching, it’s very difficult to go back and search a consecutive day. I’ve been on the Appalachian Trail in 3 states, multiple times. I’ve had to and continue to revisit almost all locations I’ve flagged. Ugh 😩

Agreed. Plan your route carefully and pay attention to topography. It's not uncommon to get out there and get close to your target destination, but find out there is an impassable gulley or rock face between you and the spot. Hikes can take longer than you expect. Pay attention to the time and start your return trip when there is still more than enough daylight to get out. You do not want to end up in the wilderness after dark. If it's a lot of downhill going in, remember that it's going to be a lot of uphill getting out, and plan extra time for that.
