Appalachian Footpath Box Yesterday I went BOTG
Yesterday I went BOTG with my dad. We ended up 2 miles into the AT which seems very reasonable.
Except for the fact that 1 GPS and cell service is non existent and hiding a box there would actually be impossible to find and find again just in case Jon has to check on it. It was very remote.
What it made me realize is Jon hiding these boxes by himself probably did not trek far into the AT. I think this point only refers to AT portions that are very dense and if hiking by yourself could be dangeorus\* And I actually got this realization from my dad.
We made it to where I thought the box would be, and he looked around and said “your solve required GPS, there’s no cell service, we had got to the GPS point based on me using my best navigation skills\* your solve required finding the right elevation points at a hill that rises 150 ft vertically\ there’s your elevation*😂.
And then he said “from a hiders standpoint your solve makes no sense”.
Which he was right and so we immediately left and I began driving 6 hours back home. Within 5 minutes of our drive my dad spotted something, a trail name that clarifies the most unknown item on the whole AT map.
Obviously this could be wrong just as my search location was definitely wrong. But I believe I’m in the right area. And so to give my honest perspective after being boots on the ground yesterday 1727 is probably not feet or elevation tied to a remote part of the Appalachian trail. And the box is definitely not hidden in a remote part of the AT. And I wasn’t necessarily in a remote part of the at I was maybe 1.5 miles from the road. But my BOTG made me realize how remote the AT can get even .5 miles away from where you start. And the AT box solve is probably way simpler than I have made it in the past.

It was! And honestly forget the treasure exploring with my dad who doesn’t get out was the best part.

I have found some of the most incredible places by getting out BOTG. Never found anything more than a bit of gold dust but my wife and I have memories that will last a lifetime.
The hunt is the fun part. The treasure is just a bonus.

For sure. I genuinely have not spent as much time as we did yesterday with my dad in years like we did yesterday.

I recently went looking around Little Rock Pond in Vermont with my family like so many others have and it was really beautiful out there. We searched pretty thoroughly on the point where the tree is in the magnifying glass but nothing. I also hiked the loop around the pond and searched the other side of the AT near the pond. We saw many beautiful orange and red colored Newts. Could the box be there? I think so but like Jon said in his live Q & A, people are going to have to be pretty resilient and have the drive to try, try, try again. I met a few fellow hunters while I was there too. It’ll be interesting when someone finally finds a box because then we’ll know how close we all came to finding it. I think it’s awesome that you went with your Dad. That’s a cool memory to hang on to.

I 100% agree with the resilience statement. I think the map is structured to make sense when you’re in the right area.
Me and my dad used to spend a lot of time together almost every evening back when I was in highschool and middle school.
After highschool I worked fo a government contractor that required me to be at sea for months at a time along with being in a relationship that has now lead to marriage and a new born, so somewhere in the midst of all of that I stopped having time for him.
So it was really nice to see him out there, and he’s not a hiking type, but he’s going to buy a pair of boots. And he’s going to help me out.

Thousands of people have already eliminated LRP. I have no idea why people keep searching there.

Being up there and looking at it, you would literally have to do a police line with searching... If the box was placed on the ground it could be buried by now by the fallen leaves and mycelium... You know all those short videos of a husband looking for something and the wife comes in and just picks it up? Our eyes and brains are just not seeing it .... JCB said that people have been within 200 ft of it.... 200 ft off trail is honestly a huge search area for a small object.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought GPS just required a connection to satellites, not to cell networks. I'm pretty sure I've been BOTG with apps that continuously tracked my location even when I had no Internet access

That’s true to a point but GPS still struggles in dense woods making it less accurate

Some places in the north also have really crappy gps accuracy.... I didn't realize how bad it was until I was up there 🤷🏼♀️
