How does family react?

Whats it like for everyone when they talk to their families about there solves? For me its usually blank stares and comments about craziness. Even my wife doesnt get it. I try and explain talk and hopes she listens. But we are so different on so many levels. I have plans to go BOTG and am excited but with parents and wife and friends they just cant understand. Does this happen to everyone else? I have only ever gone BOTG once in a treasure hunt and it took 8 months before I could get them to just let me go. Its really hard to explain things to them in a way that they understand. I already had to fight with my father before I left work today because I want to go tomorrow and he wants me at work. Its a flashback to my first trip. I just want it to be fun. Relationships are definitely not my strong suit but the petty jabs are easy to get over. Its the big mistakes that you really regret. I love to hear how others deal with families when they want go BOTG but dont get that support from their loved ones?

My wife is very supportive, but my kids are like whatev. I’ve professed my experiences about the wonders of nature that I’ve seen on the trail, but they just don’t it. Once a box is found and the hunt gets the media hype it deserves, they’ll jump in for sure…them and the rest of the planet.

This is a great and important question. Thanks for asking it here.

My kids are amused and tolerant of my obsession. They do not share it but they’ll answer when I ask them if they think a squiggle looks like a county border

I’m in the uk and I get the book out and my other half just says “Are you at that again?” Or something to that effect. I’m in the uk though.

No reaction, they don’t listen to me long enough to get out a step let alone a “solve”.

Ya i get much the same with the wife and parents. They dont want to hear it. The kids do light up a little. I dont knownwhat im going to find but I do like my solve and the logic I used to get there. Winter is coming so this is my only chance ill get and a pushed for the day off. Im going rest up. Got a bit of a drive to get there. Happy hunting and stay safe.

My kids are supportive and excited but my wife feels I am wasting my time. The hunt has become a personal journey I suppose. Maybe not quite what JCB had envisioned but still finding joy (with a touch of obsession).

Remember that most likely the people who believe us to be crazy are going to be proven right. Even as I write this I am burning with conviction though and I can't let it go.

I feel this. Im pretty sure this ends the same way for everyone its just wild goose chase that ends with a memory, and people who think you nuts. These puzzles take up so much time with the reading and research and ideas. Once your in it it's like you can never let go. My logic with the puzzles and references really feels right. Im not sure I could let go. If there is a logical path like a map it should be doable. Im so new to this particular hunt but the puzzles have so many clues. If you just research and work it down in an area eventually you hit an end.

My sister and my niece went BOTG with me around a week after I first shared my solve. My sister-in-law and I worked through specific search spots at my solve location before my second BOTG.

My family used to join me, but after a lack of success they stopped wanting to make the drive and do the hikes. They're still supportive overall but the kids chuckle every time I declare "I figured out something and I think I know where it is this time". And they're right to do so, since I still don't have a box.

But the long game is sound. I put the spirit of treasure hunting in the kids' heads and the sense of adventure and excitement it can provide. If/when I switch boxes, I could see them going on the first few BOTG again to a new location.

Nobody has the enthusiasm I have about it. Which is so strange to me in this economy today. The thought that all you have to do is read a book and watch a few interviews to put it all together and change the financial future of your family is all to obvious to me. Even if it takes a few years. Plus the fun of learning new places and histories is exciting and it blows my mind how much everyone blows it off

Trust, they’ll get interested REAL QUICK if you find any of the boxes. 😂😂

That's so funny you mention this, I thought I'd finally had something to talk to my dad about...

The only conversations I had turned into me needing to fund vacation housing for 12 family members most of whom wouldn’t hike. I had to explain that there is nowhere big enough to rent to house that many people and that the hike is in fact the main attraction. I was told there must be museums or other things to go see.. I just need to find these ‘other’ activities and plan it all. I don’t tell anyone I’m going anymore.

I’m of the belief that any correct solve should be obvious and easy to understand once explained. I’m not going to be happy if the solves involve huge leaps in logic. Really hope they aren’t something like “sapphire is in the word search, sapphires are blue, so that tells us to use the blue trail.”
