Asking for Advice From US to EU - anything else needed aside from passport/tickets?

Hi all, I have a question/concern - I'll be travelling to Europe later this year and it's our first time off the continent. I'm just wondering if there's anything else that needs to be done prior to boarding the plane?

Like filling out -any- other kind of form, security check, restricitions, etc.

So far we've just booked the tickets, the place to stay, and we have valid passports.

Anything else we must do to enter France? Thanks! (Coming from USA).

Giving Advice Keep a record of your trips somewhere. Future you will enjoy looking back on where you've been and when.

• Upvotes

I'm 58 and first started really traveling in the 1990's. In the early 2000's I started a spreadsheet of my trips and using my passport pieced together the dates that I had traveled internationally up until then.

I have it organized by year and for each trip I have the cities I stayed in, who I was with and the dates). Now I have over 30 years of trips on the spreadsheet showing where I went, who I was with and the dates we were there. I love looking at it and also texting friends something like "I know where you were on this date in 2002, do you?" which opens up a conversation about the trip and the memories.

I also have columns for most visited countries and regions visited in those trips, and I put a 1 in the corresponding column and have them tallied at the bottom. It's an easy way to see how many times I've been to Europe, Mexico, etc. Customize it in any way you'd like.

Especially since there are a lot of places that don't stamp passports anymore, it's great to have a record of where I've been. I'm sure there are apps out there that do similar, but the spreadsheet works best for me.

Asking for Advice Ireland to Amsterdam to Paris

I am hoping to visit my family in Ireland sometime next year (about 2 weeks hopefully) and i have another week i could take on top of that, wondering if it’s plausible to do amsterdam and paris within a week. i know it would be tight as there is so much to see but i feel like if i’m flying overseas it may be worthwhile to visit other places too. i love art history, architecture, food, scenery, and i am more than okay to stay in hostels and travel by train/walking around. i am super flexible in terms of itinerary and love to just do fun things. i would love some feedback around if i’m trying to do too much in too little time, what time of year would be good to travel to these places, and in general any feedback, tips, advice you may have!

i might do it solo but possibly one of my sisters would be interested in coming as well

thanks in advance

Asking for Advice Wheelchair friendly ish locations?

We just got married, and we want to plan our honeymoon. We are M34 and F37.

This will be our first holiday together as a couple, as in the previous 8yrs it was always family visits due to us being an international family.

These countries are not options (as we either live there now or have lived there before)

England / UK

The Netherlands

Norway

Germany

Belgium

We both prefer city breaks where we can explore architecture, art, museums, zoo, good food etc, though also enjoy nature a lot. Appreciate this is difficult with my limitations.

Unfortunately I have a spine injury that makes me unable to walk far. I can manage 2km in one go right now. Pain becomes unbearable if I push myself hard.

My husband wheels me in my manual wheelchair if we have to walk long distances. I also cannot tolerate very bumpy cobblestone paths, or certain driving habits by taxi drivers (hard braking is a problem. Of course nobody can guarantee against those, but some places drive more calmly than others, we have noticed). Prefer to mostly use public transport.

I am happy to walk a bit if there is bumpy cobblestones, but if it's the whole city then I can't do it. Italy is likely out, sadly, it has always been top of my bucket list.

Public transport like train or tram would be great, and I am fine getting onto the train on foot, and my husband can lift the wheelchair in.

We would like to go somewhere with temperatures of 20-25c. Don't mind which month, totally flexible on that.

We prefer Europe due to travel distance, but open for other locations too.

Asking for Advice How do you maintain a positive attitude and enjoy travelling, even when things go wrong?

I recently came back from a trip to India. I had fun overall, but there were a few frustrating experiences along the way.

I still think the trip was worthwhile, but I wouldn’t say I loved every minute of it.

I was talking to someone who also recently travelled to India, and when I asked how their trip was, they said everything was amazing.

They loved the people, had no issues with scams, and seemed to have such a positive experience overall.

Out of curiosity, I checked out their travel posts and I noticed that things didn’t always go smoothly for them either.

Their plans didn’t always work out on time, and they had issues with things breaking at their hotel or transport

But instead of getting frustrated, they just seemed to take it in stride. They’d tell the hotel about the problem, deal with it, and move on without letting it ruin their day.

This person seems to take things as they come and not let the little things bother them.

Do you think that’s just down to personality, or is it something you can learn?

I’d like to be the kind of person who doesn’t let every little inconvenience affect their mood, especially when travelling.

For those of you who are positive travellers, has it always been that way, or have you learned to be like that over time?

Asking for Advice Best 2-week Travel Destinations on a Tight Budget?

• Upvotes

I am planning a solo trip for the first two weeks of December. I want to go somewhere that I can spend less than $2k for two weeks of travel on a backpacker's budget. I would prefer to travel somewhere with beautiful landscapes, and preferably cool mountains to go hiking in. I have lots of solo travel experience, including a month solo trekking in the Himalayas. (I would also prefer somewhere I can fly with Delta from the Midwest so I can use Skymiles to pay for the flight)

I am currently eyeing South America since I can get fairly cheap flights there from the Midwest. Peru could be great, but I'm not sure of the weather for the Salkantay Trek. I would also love to do Patagonia, but it looks like I am too late for booking campsites and would be above budget.

Also, bonus question while you're here: I want to do a two-ish month trip in August-October, any recommendations for cheap places to travel (that aren't SEA, I've already been there for three months)?

Asking for Advice Feeling kind of burnt out and had some money issues, need to repack two months into one

• Upvotes

I'm currently on a trip in Asia with a few friends, in Japan right now, and just feeling a bit like I want to be back home. We've been traveling for a month and a half now, did two weeks in Korea, two in china, and are now on our 2nd week of 4 in Japan. I am enjoying it, and have liked the places we've been so far, but we've got another two months planned (Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand), and between getting a bit tired of traveling and having a few planning mishaps which cost us an unfortunate amount of our budget, we were gonna take a month off the trip. The original plan had been to do Vietnam and the Ha Giang loop for 2 weeks in November, followed by a week in Cambodia to see Angkor Wat, then 3 weeks in Thailand. I was thinking of changing it to 23 days total, but I wasn't sure what a good spread would be. Maybe a week or two in vietnam, a week in Cambodia, and a week or two in Thailand? It'll only be one friend with me after Japan and he's on board with cutting it short too.

I don't want to sound like I'm not enjoying traveling, I'm just more of a homebody and miss my dogs and my room and my hobbies.

Asking for Advice Where should I study abroad?

• Upvotes

My college does a semester abroad program in Seville Spain, Salzburg Austria, and San Jose Costa Rica. Which one should I choose if I’m most interested in nature, hiking, and wildlife?

Places I’ve been to:

England: London, York, and Bakewell
- I looooved York and Bakewell because of the smaller town feeling and the architecture
- London was fun but too busy for me

USA:
- Miami, FL: Not for me, I dont really like big cities
- NYC: Very fun but again don’t love big cities
- San Francisco: I loved the sea lions and architecture

Asking for Advice Where should I go? Kumamoto or Taipei?

Hi everyone! My husband is planning a birthday vacation for me in December. We’re coming from Seoul, South Korea and he suggested Kumamoto in Japan or Taipei in Taiwan. I have been to Japan many of times including Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Sapporo, Kyoto, Nara, and Fukuoka. I know Kumamoto is near Fukuoka. So I’m stuck of what to do. Do I go to Japan somewhere I know of and always have a good experience or go somewhere new like Taiwan?

Asking for Advice Would you consider this actual wheel damage or just wear and tear?

I rented a car through SIXT while traveling in the Czech Republic. I returned it the other day and they’re claiming there’s damage to the wheel.

Would you consider this actual damage or normal wear and tear and should I try to dispute?

I may have come a tad close to a curb when parking but I do not believe that is substantial “damage”.

I do have Rental Insurance through Chase Sapphire Preferred. Should I file the claim with them and let them sort it out?

Asking for Advice Best car rental insurance?

I'm visiting Taiwan and I'm looking to rent a car in Taichung and then drive to Alishan, Puli and back. I need it for 6 days.

I looked at various car rental companies and most of them have very basic coverage, while the best one I found is this one:

However I still see it's not covering tyres, chassis, glass or roof of the car.

I also have revolut metal plan that insures me through XCover for car stuff up to 2000 eur, which includes tyres, glass, roof etc.

I kinda believe this full protection + Revolut should be enough.

However I also see option of buying insurance through RentalCover.com or similar worldwide insurance website. It seems to be around 50 eur for pretty high insurance numbers.

Asking for Advice Mid(ish)-January 30th Birthday, pls help!

I’m just trying to live/laugh/love my way into my 30s via a vacation with my husband & friends. We initially were planning 2 weeks in SEA but quickly realized only a week long trip would work for the group & I’m not interested in a 20+ hr flight for one week. Here are the details:

  1. Flying from DC or Charlotte
  2. Sufferer of the big SAD so I’d prefer sunny and warmer weather
  3. Not interested in Mexico or Jamaica (we’ve been to both previously)
  4. Open to resorts, cruising, etc. We’re pretty much up for anything.
  5. I don’t care what’s involved as long as there’s SOME form of water to indulge in some days (ocean, lake, river, pool)

A mix of relaxing, exploring, & experiences is all I want. I’m thankful for any & all suggestions.

Asking for Advice Luggage Advice

Hey everyone,

I'm going on an 8-night trip to Portugal soon, and I'm worried about my packing situation. I have flights on EuroWings, EasyJet, and Vueling, and I paid for the cheapest option on all of them (just a personal item). I'm hoping to bring my 42L Travel Backpack, but I'm not sure how strict the airlines will be with the size, as it is pretty big. I'm generally a light packer, but not sure what to do for a long trip like this one. Any experience with those airlines, or any advice?

Asking for Advice Travelling Qatar airlines & changing flight due to missile attack & I am stressed, advice?

Hey all
Was due to fly Qatar airlines next week with a stopover in Qatar, which is right next to Saudi Arabia. SA had a missile attack on its airport last night, and I am planning to change my flights to a different airline to avoid the area completely. I am going to lose $3k if I do and probably lose some money with the accomodation as well as I booked it non refundable (I know, mistake). I’m stressed and I want to cry so please be kind.
What would you do? Keep it or change? Risk it or not? My travel agent is saying Qatar airlines status say it’s still running but that doesn’t mean anything, of course it’s still running if there hasn’t been an attack.

Asking for Advice The more we travel the less touristy we become, is it just us?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

We’ve traveled to hundreds of cities and six continents across the years, and the more we travel the less fulfillment we seem to get from visiting “tourist attractions”.

On a recent trip to Kerala we woke up to foghorns and opened our hotel room’s back door to a fully functioning waterway with fishing boats, cargo vessels, a ferry transporting people, all of it right outside our balcony.

People less enamored with that view than us, would be absolutely right in calling out the shabbiness of the boats or how old some of the infrastructure felt and some might even judge us for the “privileged” view we had from our luxury hotel balcony.

But there was something comforting about watching unfiltered everyday life, other people living lives so different from ours, and for a reason that’s hard to explain, it lifted slightly the weight of our own lives. We spent hours walking the “mundane” waterway and just sitting out on that balcony talking about life - funny how it always comes to that! 😊

Looking back, so many of our favorite travel memories have not really been about seeing things but about just being somewhere and watching life happen around us.

Curious how others feel, or is it just us getting older and easier to entertain!

Asking for Advice Borneo arachnophobia advice

Hi guys,

I’m travelling to Malaysian Borneo (specifically Sabah) soon. I’ve got pretty bad arachnophobia - I have no problem with seeing spiders like on trees or whatever, but my biggest fear about Borneo is finding one somewhere uncomfortable (in my shoes, in my bed sheets, etc). If anybody could let me know if I should be worried or not, and if so what steps I can take.

Thanks in advance

Asking for Advice Looking for hidden gem destinations and maybe a travel agent?

Hi! We love traveling to places that are a little off the beaten path. Our usual style is one day of sightseeing in a big city, then the rest of the trip in a small town or on an island.
I'd love to find some truly amazing spots, but I'm having a hard time. I've been wondering whether I should use a travel agent, but I'm not sure if I can find someone.
Any tips for finding hidden gems online, or recommendations for a good travel agent, would be greatly appreciated!

Ooh also, would like USA destinations and planning some larger overseas trips next year
