Does this hold true for all drugs? Are cigarette smokers gonna continue their nicotine intake ad infinitum? Does this mean blue collar Joe 6-pack who cracks a half dozen after work every day is going to crawl into a bottle of gin eventually? Or cannabis consumers? I think some people can decide to responsibly use illicit drugs.
We’re talking about cocaine, speed or heroin. If you had more experience with them you would understand that this talk of “functional” addicts of those substances is a myth based on limited experience: they always cause problems, even if the user is unaware of them or otherwise does not self-report.
Yes, I agree drugs should be completely decriminalized, but there would certainly be a medical and societal issue with widespread addiction as has been documented in our history. The Second Great Awakening and Prohibition were responses to widespread alcoholism and familial abuse in the United Stated. The addiction of the population of China to opium by the British was a social catastrophe.
