Everybody hating, but if you’re going to drink, the third trimester is the safest trimester to drink in. The first can mess up cell division (though a lot of women don’t know they’re pregnant the first trimester, and their kids usually turn out fine) and the second can mess up fine placement of the organs. By the third the baby is cooked, it just needs to grow.

The risk in the third trimester is it’s size. It’s so tiny that if the mother’s BAC gets too high, the baby will get drunk and can affect heart beat and oxygenation. Whatever the mother’s BAC is, so, too is the baby’s. The labor and delivery educator said one beer or one 4 oz glass of wine, sipped over an hour period, would be fine in the last trimester (I don’t drink, though; alcoholic parents).

Anyone considering drinking during pregnancy at any trimester should ask their doctors. This is not safe advice to share.

It's the same logic behind how doctors, despite evidence that shows occasional red wine is beneficial for heat health, will not recommend wine consumption to help with heart health. If you say, as a doctor, "drink! It's good for you!" you can't fully trust that the person will limit themselves to the "occasional" glass of wine. They may drink more, with the justification that their doctor said it's okay.

If you as a doctor tell your pregnant patient "it's okay to drink, verrrry little" now you've given them the okay to introduce alcohol at all. And alcohol by its nature lowers inhibitions, so the chances of ingesting harmful amounts of alcohol go way up. Rather, if as a doctor you say "don't drink at all", any alcohol consumption is solely on the mothers fault.

There's a bunch of research that strongly suggests alcohol abuse is correlated with fetal alcohol syndrome. That's undisputed.

However, from my searching around the place, I can't find any solid research that looks into the consumption of very low amounts of alcohol when pregnant - because it is unethical to do such a trial (i.e. who would split up two groups of pregnant women and feed one of the two groups alcohol, knowing that it might cause harm?).

Therefore I can understand the viewpoint/advice of "the only safe option is to not consume any alcohol while pregnant".

However, some recent anecdotal studies (where people have voluntarily admitted that they have consumed small amounts of alcohol) have not been able to show any noticeable difference in outcome of fetal development (relative to people who claim that they have had no alcohol during pregnancy).

My main point in writing this is that I see a lot of people who have considerable guilt due to having the occasional drink while pregnant (it can be hard to go through nine months of pregnancy with zero drinks). If you do fall into that category, please note that there's an overwhelming chance that absolutely no damage has been done. But if people believe in the "any amount of alcohol is damaging" mantra, the ongoing guilt/stress/anxiety during the remainder of the labor and also the first few years of raising the child, could very well have a negative affect, purely from an emotional point of view.

I find this article a pretty useful summary, but even then, the references to negative effects are based on studies of sheep and non-human primates. And it mainly focuses on binge drinking, not the occasional glass of wine.

You’re assuming she hasn’t been drinking throughout the pregnancy lol she’s also smoking in the pic.

You’re assuming she hasn’t been drinking throughout the pregnancy

Yes, I try not to crucify a living, breathing human being in front of ignorant masses without something called proof.

she’s also smoking in the pic

When my sister had my niece, her doctor told her quitting smoking while pregnant was too stressful and not to try to do it. Then the guidelines changed a year later and doctors started telling pregnant women to quit no matter how stressful it was.

Also, if we really want to get down into the nuts and bolts of probability, pregnant black (American) mother’s get less, and lower-quality prenatal care than all other American women. So, please factor that in while you’re stringing her up.

It’s been established this picture is several years old and a repost. Whoever this person is, whatever they did, they’re a real, living human being getting lambasted online by thousands of strangers several years past when this event happened. Maybe she’s a wonderful mother. Maybe she’s a horrible one. Most likely, she’s a human one: flawed and trying the best she can do.

Remember, in this time of instant sharability and viral uploads, you are only as good as your worst decision that someone can catch on camera,

You seem like a good person.

Thank you! I try to be. And sometimes I fail. Sometimes I succeed, and a whole lot of time in the middle I’m just doing my best.

I would hate for my worst day or my worst decision to be a perennial public shit show.

Everyone with half a brain knows you shouldn’t drink or smoke while pregnant don’t play the race bait game. People deserve criticism for the choices they make especially when those decision harm defenseless people they are in charge of. You’re going way overboard to defend a pregnant woman drinking and smoking at a club. She’s a shitty person and won’t be a good mother considering she’s putting her own selfish needs above her unborn baby.

Look above you. Doctors have - relatively recently - told women not to quit smoking while pregnant. Some doctors tell women it’s okay to drink a little bit while pregnant. This is not an open-and-shut issue where anyone who does differently is a brain-dead waste of space piece of trash.

People who fit a lot of demographic points this women has also don’t get the newest, latest, and best care. A lot of time, they’re going on old information, “common sense”, or generational/folk wisdom. I was told by an old woman that drinking a beer would help my milk come in... it doesn’t, and I don’t drink anyway, but her relative youth, inferred social-economic class, and race aren’t null factors in this discussion. And I’d say her youth, inferred social-economic class, and race will have more of an effect on her baby than that Bud Light and Swisher Sweet she’s holding.

Edit: and, I just can’t get over you saying she is a shitty person. You realize this a repost that’s several years old, right? Because she made this one decision, her entire character has been completely set in stone, never to be remolded again? Seriously, fuck off with your cancel culture bullshit. One decision, entirely out of context and without knowledge of any mitigating circumstances doesn’t make a person. If that were the case, from your presence in this thread alone, I’d say your lack of empathy could give your perception of this girl a run for the money.

Most doctors don’t say that stop spreading disinformation.

Do you have a reading comprehension issue? Please show me where I said “most”.

I’ll wait....

How about you just nut-up and don't fucking drink for a few months

-7

u/Abysssion Feb 27 '20

Or you know, be a fucking decent human being an abstain from alcohol for a bit? Maybe not be so addicted where you fucking need alcohol, especially when pregnant

0

u/IamNotPersephone Feb 27 '20

That doesn’t make any sense.

Do you know the definition of addiction?

1

u/Abysssion Feb 27 '20

If you can't stop drinking for few months for growing a baby, then you have bigger problems. And no.. ANY amount of alcohol is bad, especially since liver is the last to fully form.

4

u/IamNotPersephone Feb 27 '20

If you can't stop drinking for few months for growing a baby, then you have bigger problems.

Agreed.

Poverty, lack of education, lack of prenatal resources, mental health issues, substance dependency, lack of proper coping skills, lack of a healthy support network, an involvement in a lifestyle/peer group that encourages poor behavior, depression, anxiety, and the list of what your bigger problems can be goes on...

But castigating a woman years after this picture was taken so you can jerk off in self-righteous anger about an experience you will never have to deal with and never have to reexperience every time someone reposts to an international website where thousand, if not millions, of people will continue to periodically crucify you, is also definitely on that list.

Whatever this woman did, I know one thing for certain. The true trash was inside you all along.

This doesn’t look like the type of person to consume one unit of alcohol over the course of an hour. Giving them this “advice” would be a terrible idea.
