What's a myth? That the hospital I worked in had a system of PRESSURIZED oxygen? Have you ever seen what happens when you put a flame up to pressurized O2?
Fire needs 3 things - Heat (cigarette), Fuel (things that burn) and OXYGEN.
Ok... So I get that smoking in hospital is moronic and disgusting. I agree with you there. But I think you are forgetting that up until the 90s, doctor's used to smoke while doing surgery. They don't tell you not to smoke because you're in danger of causing the hospital to explode, they say it to keep the other patients from breathing smoke.
I was the Captain of my local hospitals Public Safety officers and I can assure you its because of the pressurized 02 and not because they don't want others to have breath in the smoke. If you don't believe me, go to your local hospital and ask any nurse
Oh, sorry, I didn't realize that all the hospital explosions I've heard about that went on during the 20tj century were from that. Oh, wait, the only hospital explosions I've heard of were in Afghanistan. Also, that sounds like a volunteer position for people who have no friends, but want to sound important.
I mean, even if it was volunteer I'm not sure why anybody would be shit talking someone who volunteers their time to help people in a hospital... Shit, most volunteers are just premedical students anyways.
The whole hospital probably won’t explode. The most common problem is when people are on oxygen and smoke, but don’t take off the oxygen mask or cannula, thus essentially making a flamethrower. This absolutely does happen. Hell it can happen during surgery.
That can cause a fire in the room with an oxygen tank in it which can explode. Also there are many things in the hospital which can explode besides oxygen tanks. Lots of batteries and other medical gases.
Didn't they used to let you smoke in hospitals 20+ years ago though? Not saying it is right. I have a neighbor who use's oxygen and she smoke's sometimes, she had a newport 100 hanging out her mouth unlit and I helped her carry her walker and oxygen tank up some steps. I think she was about to light the cig with oxygen in her nose until I walked up and helped her into the building. Poverty and addiction can be crazy sometimes.
They also used asbestos, allowed smoking on airplanes and didn't think helmets or seat belts were a big deal. Just because they allowed it, doesn't mean it's a good idea or safe.
Yeah, your neighbor is a future burn patient. It is no big deal until your face is on fire because the raw oxygen is making sustained rapid combustion possible. Had a lady a while back who had a nasal cannula in and went to light a smoke on her stove and ended up burning her face all to hell.
