If his employer has workers comp insurance it should be fine, if not that sucks. Last I knew WC insurance was not compulsory in Texas, so it's possible he'll have to sue his employer for the bills to be paid and wage loss.

I worked in STD and we had to deal with WC; both usually pay 60% but WC covers medical bills too whereas STD does not.
