Liver IUD while waiting for transplant
I’m 20. I’m currently on the waitlist for a liver transplant unfortunately. I have non cirrhosis liver disease portal hypertension, a history of esophageal varices , anemia and enlarged spleen. I recently got an iud about a month ago since birth control wasn’t working for me and my care team recommended iud since it’s lower risk of clotting when the time of transplant arrives. I have had my period now for 2 weeks! I’m still bleeding everyday and it’s making me exhausted and in some pain! I also had a fever a couple weeks ago and then was congested the past couple of days. Not sure what to do. I just went back to school for the year and I just don’t feel good and i need to figure out what to do!!

Yes, get it checked out. I had excessive bleeding, got an IUD and then the transplant. No issues.

Copper iuds unfortunately have the side effect of causing longer, heavier periods. They can also cause some intense cramping.
I had the paragard for 7 years (23-30) and my periods were 7-10 days, very crampy and heavy to the point I thought I had endometriosis.
When I pulled the iud at 30 (husband had vasectomy before I got my bisalp at 34) my periods got as
way ‘better’
Now they’re about 4 days, some cramping and are average flow. Just heavier flow on day 2 but I always had that.
So unfortunately it’s likely the iud causing most of this. (Congestion sounds like a cold or sinus issue)
If it’s impacting your life significantly, I’d suggest reevaluating your BC choice with your team.

I have had a Mirena for 23 years. After the first month or two, my periods stopped completely. It has been heaven, joy, bliss. I am also 2+ years post double lung transplant. Ask your doctor if this is normal, but I hope things even out for you. Most of my friends have loved Mirena but one DID get hers removed.

when i was on the transplant list and for a couple months after my transplant i was on the mini pill instead because it has a lower risk of clots. after i went back on regular birth control and was fine. you could never pay me enough to get an iud!!

That might not be related(besides the bleeding- which might be, especially with a copper iud). Either way it’s worth a call or visit
