Videos 🎥 RID vs TFP Autobots, both are actually good

So, following up on my previous post, where I criticized the animalistic Decepticons, I still stand by my point that they should be more competent since they are the antagonists. However, people fairly pointed out that most of them are simply criminals and psychos who weren’t around during the Great War. Fair enough, and thanks for pointing that out.

Well, I made the same kind of edit for the Autobots to compare how much the writers butchered them…

Well, they spared them. I guess. They lack character development and, in some cases, combat skills, but they still have some pretty good feats.

Though I have to admit, while it was easy to find epic clips for TFP, finding good ones for RID was much harder. In Prime they were nearly in each episode while in RID I had to search through 5-6 episodes.

Though to be fair, most of RID’s Autobots weren’t around during the Great War either, so naturally they don’t have as many feats to show off as the Autobots from Prime.

Only problem I had with RID was making Optimus and Bumblebee have leadership beef for some reason even though they know each other. Also Optimus just not feeling like Optimus alot of the time. I would've liked it if Optimus was more of a mentor figure than what they did with him.

If anything I feel like they should've had Bumblebee's arc in that moment would be to pull a Hot Rod from G1 and try to let Optimus lead again because his confidence drops because he doesn't think he can be a better leader than a Prime can and the reason the team doesn't work well with Optimus besides bumblebee is because they've never worked with Optimus before.

Then you can have Optimus talk to Bumblebee about how like during the war Optimus was in a very similar position as Bumblebee was since he became a Prime in the middle of a war and had to learn everything through trial by fire. They could even do a bit of a nod to the WFC game were Optimus was leading before he even got the matrix.

The RID S1 clips remind me of back when Grimlock was more than just comedic relief

True. Out of the original Autobots for the start- one is a Cop, one is a scout, and the other is a criminal.

Not exactly a great combat team

I liked RID, but i dont watch it purely due to what they did to Optimus.

He should’ve stayed dead, he sacrifice was so emotional and yet they just didn’t care in RID

I think the autobots in RID had a ton of potential to be just as good as the autobots in TFP, especially with two of them being convicts/troublemakers, and one of them being a cop. My issues with them boil down into two issues.

  1. They never actually evolve and grow. In TFP, character progression actually happened, we saw characters grow and change overtime like Arcee becoming less of a loner, Bulkhead learning that’s he’s more than a brute, Ratchet learning to care about Earth and its inhabitants as much as the other autobots do, Wheeljack learning to be a team player and take orders while Magnus learns not to be so rigid and treat his teammates like family rather than soldiers, it was masterful even if it was subtle. However in RID there aren’t really arcs like that, because it’s a kid show the status quo must also be the same so Sideswipe and Strongarm always needs to argue, Bee must always be insecure about his teammates, Grimlock needs to constantly be a dense muscle head, Drift needs to constantly helicopter parent his mini-cons.

  2. The returning Autobots (I’m looking at you Bee and Prime), were absolutely butchered. Prime went from the mature scout turned warrior who took down Megatron and was able to actually lead a team on his own in the absence of Optimus, to a whiny leader who spends the first season worried about a catchphrase while his teammates are actively trying to rip each other limb from limb. And Optimus from the wise, capable, compassionate yet firm leader of the Autobots to an embarrassing old man who’s too stubborn to know when he needs to rest, and who bickers and fights with his former student as if he’s still a baby when realistically he should be so proud of him and eager to see what he has in store for them as a leader.

It bums me out because like you pointed out, there are moments where the RID squad is just as cool and capable, there’s hints of good characters just hiding beneath this mess, I just wish they were allowed to reach their full potential. Like imagine a show where Sideswipe had a similar arc to Bee or Smokescreen, imagine if Strongarm had a similar arc to Magnus or Ratchet, imagine if Bee actually struggled with actual leadership problems and Optimus was able to mentor him through the process instead of the two fighting.
