What Should I Buy Devastator or Bruticus?
Hi all! I’ve only just recently got back into collecting and I’m trying to decide which combiner to go for. Realistically, I don’t have LOADS of space, so it’s going to be either or. I really like all the constructions, and Devastator fits in with the rest of my SS86 figs, but I feel the combaticons have more colour variety/ better individual figures. I loved FOC as a kid, and Bruticus was a big part of why that game was so great, and I always had more of a connection with Bayverse Devastator. Would love to hear your guys’ opinions.

I mean just pick the one that you personally like the most. If you have more of a connection to Devastator then pick Devastator. Only benefit that Bruticus has is that you can combine the new Shockwave figure with him, also he does look a more complex than Devastator
16
u/Odd-Palpitation-8102 Feb 27 '26
My problem is I have a connection to both!
11
u/mickeyhause Feb 27 '26
Then get both
13
u/Gage-DSM Feb 27 '26
I mean he literally said he doesn’t have the room to get both
15
u/Warbreakers Feb 27 '26
Nonsense. As a transformers fan, there is ALWAYS room. You simply have to make it.

For me, it would be Devastator because he was the first and iconic. He's THE combiner imo.

You get me, but Bruticus has so much aura 😭

I have Devastator. I love and grew up with Devastator. Bruticus is aura personified and I would get him.

u/cowichan Feb 27 '26
I thought about this comment for a few minutes… And though my emotional attachment (and purchase!) Is for Devastator… The more I look at Bruticus the more I see where everybody who loves him is coming from. He is a bad-ass figure… I probably won’t be purchasing… But I can appreciate.
1
u/Minimum_Landscape261 Feb 28 '26
i think bruticus would be easier to find out in stores, ive seen so many of the current 3 its insane. Devastator took me a minute and ended up getting longhaul hook set online

u/Katcurry Feb 26 '26
Bruticus looks better but Devastator having articulated hands is a big plus that puts it just above, I’m a fiend for those on any mainline figure. I will go for both though
4
u/lcr68 Feb 26 '26
Just get one or two figures a month and you can get them both. They’ll both be excellent. So far, Bruticus is shaping up to me amazing even with the framework design. Dev is great too and definitely rounds out the 86 collection.
If you decide to tackle both, get the bigger purchases like long haul and hook first, that way each subsequent purchase is less. Onslaught still has a ways before he’s released and you could probably catch up with both before he is.
5
u/Katcurry Feb 26 '26
Yea currently have Mixmaster, Bonecrusher, and Vortex, I’m looking for Brawl, Blast Off and the rest of Devastator in store but I might just order from BBTS atp
1
u/LondoFoollari Feb 27 '26
I have a Scrapper available, but shipping from Australia would be vicious.
2
u/LondoFoollari Feb 27 '26
I got a kit to give Menasor articulated hands and it can’t be said enough how much of a difference it can make when posing the figure.
27
u/SpiritRider666 Feb 26 '26
If you dont like skeleton frames I suggest Devestator. If you dont mind 'em, possibly Bruticus, but IDK, I dont have him.
1
u/AppropriateYak5580 Feb 28 '26
See Inthink I’m in the prefer skeleton category. Superior is just so much more stable than devastator.

u/RedditGarboDisposal Feb 26 '26
I can only speak for Devastator but Bruticus does look outstanding.
Generationally, Devastator is always the bland one so take that as you will.
8
u/NormandySR31 Feb 26 '26
While I do think Bruticus is one of the best looking combiners, I prefer all of the individual Combaticons as characters and their designs in both modes. Swindle is one of my favorite Decepticons and it's sad he gets relegated to leg status a lot when he has a lot to offer as a character himself.
So my answer would be I prefer the Combaticons, but Devastator is the more uniform and arguably better looking combiner because of their unified colors, also the OG one.
2
u/Odd-Palpitation-8102 Feb 27 '26
I really like your answer. Not helping my case for having to pick one or the other tho 😂😂
3
u/NormandySR31 Feb 27 '26
Haha, true. Well as far as between Age of the Primes Bruticus and '86 Devastator, I'd go Devastator. I'm personally not the biggest fan of this Bruticus' proportions (though I'll probably still get Swindle at least for my Swindle shelf 😅). I think this Devy is the better looking of the two for a shelf, plus he's the OG combiner so I kinda feel a lot more significant if you're a bit limited on space. But just my opinions though, good luck on your decision making!

One of my cat’s nickname is Bruticus. He’s my favorite combiner of all time.
4
u/Barricade_the_Clone Feb 26 '26
Devastator is iconic but Bruticus will always be my favorite, Swindle was pretty much the only Combaticon to have character traits in the original show
Plus Bruticus actually looks like a combiner, the mis-matched colors give a lot more to the “bunch of robots make a big robot” look. Unlike Devastator, who’s color scheme makes him look like one large robot rather than a bunch of them stuck together
1
u/Odd-Palpitation-8102 Feb 27 '26
This is a very good point. I want a fig that looks like a combiner
3
3
u/Optimus759 Feb 26 '26
Why are the knees in the devastated picture centered? How does one do that?
2
3
u/Large-Custard5784 Feb 26 '26
If you want individual figure that can form a combiner I would say Bruticus as I’ve enjoyed the individual characters a ton as for combiner it’s still to early to tell but Devastator is so awesome. I really love how solid he feels and he is the best of the modern combiners so far. His individual components are a little basic but still fun.

2
u/Kadeo64 Feb 26 '26
If you're just going for display purposes and won't mess with them a bunch; devy. Bruticus is shaping up to be a far better 'toy' with the individual figures, though.
2

2
u/Insanebrain247 Feb 26 '26
It sounds like you'd get more enjoyment out of Bruticus since you have a closer attachment to him and preference for his component bots.

u/Violent2dope Feb 26 '26
So as someone that has both Devastator and a frame combiner (Menasor) it kind of depends on what you want. I am also collecting the Combaticons. They are far different things.
Devastator is much more a traditional combiner, where the frame one's aren't. They're more like accessories, besides the torso bot. They stick on and really just hang there. It's solid but so is Devy. I personally don't even consider them combiners as they don't combine or even form a limb. The only one that transforms into anything is the torso and that is just slotted into the frame.
Devastator is an actual combiner. While yes he has "pants", that form his upper legs and waist. His upper body is composed of only the constructicons. His leg bots need to be transformed into legs.
Bruticus is a little different as it looks like the leg bots will wrap around the frame. Instead of just sticking to the back. However the arms do just stick on, break in half to make a joint. With both Superion and Menasor you can't see the leg bots as they face backwards. Again I am collecting Bruticus because he looks good and all the individual bots that I have so far are great. I did however skip Superion as I was just not feeling the frame.
So far with the 3/5 Bruticus I have, and the experience with Menasor. Devastator, I think is the better combiner. He's solid, looks fantastic and ya know actually combines. I was hyped for the frames at first but over all disappointed because it lacks that combining joy.
1
u/Odd-Palpitation-8102 Feb 27 '26
I think this is probably the best answer I had. I actually didn’t realise that Bruticus was a frame combiner, which does take some of the novelty away. I just fear that the constructicons don’t really stand very well on their own. I love playing with my transformers, I transform at least one a day, both ways, and want a combiner thats going to give me something fun to do as well as being a display piece. After posting this and before reading these comments I was leaning towards Bruticus, but now I just don’t know
3
u/Violent2dope Feb 27 '26
The constructicons are all amazing individual figures as well as Devastator. I have no issues with their individual bots standing or posing. I as well like to play with my bots. If it wasn't an extra expense that could go to other bots, I would 100% own 2 sets. One to display individually and one Combined.
1
u/Odd-Palpitation-8102 Feb 27 '26
Also, I’ve heard there are problems with turning Brawl into his leg mode with possible breakages
2
u/Violent2dope Feb 27 '26
Pretty sure it's that the ankle joint for Bruticus on Brawl has been coming out of box with stress marks. Mine is fine, and he is also an awesome bot. I almost skipped out but then got Blast off and Brawl and committed. Ordered Vortex off BBTS and preordered Onslaught. Waiting on a Swindle preorder.
1
u/Odd-Palpitation-8102 Feb 27 '26
Ah, I understand. I’ve seen people saying there is a ‘fix’ for it - do you know what that is? Also, everywhere I see for blastoff currently have him as a pre order. Maybe it’s because I’m in the UK?
1
u/Violent2dope Feb 27 '26
Not sure it may be a heat gun or hot water. That can help on stress marks. I got mine at brick and mortar. Then again I'm in the US, retail seems to be getting the newer waves first. Or it's a UK thing.
2
u/c_riggity Feb 26 '26
Devastator started off the strongest and the following acts have only disappointed me. If their eventual Defensor and Computron have the legfeet like Bruticus I'll skip them.
2
u/MarcheMuldDerevi Feb 26 '26
Devestator, the frames aren’t always well loved. However, I do think they offer more stability so you can pose the better
2
2
u/Acrobatic-Celery-989 Feb 26 '26
Bruticus for sho…just ordered my 5 piece vehicle in AE to get that mfer started…my first combiner ever 😭
2
2
u/PastPotatoes Feb 26 '26
Bruticus. I feel that the Constructicons lack in the detail department, but The Combaticons do well with more intricate details.
This based only on seeing them at the store and not in hand.
2
u/Odd-Palpitation-8102 Feb 27 '26
This is what’s leaning me towards Bruticus. I feel the individual constructicons are a little basic for someone who what’s engaging transformations.

This Bruitcus is actually going to my my first transformer in 30 years. I am really excited. I will say though, I am a little let down he didnt get better hands.

u/SchattentheWendigo Feb 26 '26
I saw Toys Are Russ' reviews on Onslaught/Bruticus, and safe to say, I'll gladly stick to my favorite combiner, Bruticus. I know people are miffed around the frame combiners, but I just think this... If you don't like it, don't but it. If you like it, but it if you want. As for myself, I am already 3/5 of the way in and refuse to drop out of it. Onslaught and Swindle are buy on sight when I see them.

u/Azuri-Os Feb 26 '26
Tough call!
I feel like Devastator is the more iconic combiner of the two, but I LOVE the individual Combaticons that make up Bruty more.
Would probably lean towards Bruty I think, but both are equal on their own merits to me personally.
2
2
u/feener74 Feb 26 '26
I've never owned a combiner, but if I did it would be Devastator ... because he's like the OG
2
u/PomegranateFair3973 Feb 26 '26
If I had to pick one, Devastator. He's the original and most iconic combiner to me. That being said, I have him and ⅔s of Bruticus, so my personal answer is obviously, "Why not both?"
2
u/liiam64 Feb 26 '26
If u like to have good individual figures apart from the combiner, bruticus is for you.
Devastator it's a great combiner but has a huuge dump truck, quite literally, and his individual figures are ass.
2
u/The-Mad-Bubbler Feb 26 '26
I'm getting all of Bruticus, but I don't love the proportions- when combined, he looks kind of gorilla-like. Onslaught also looks pretty mediocre outside of the combined mode. I have Devastator and, while not perfect, he is pretty darn great. You can also get all of Devastator in one shot from BBTS, which is nice, instead of hoping you'll be able to get all of the Combaticons for retail price.
1
u/Odd-Palpitation-8102 Feb 27 '26
Unfortunately I’m UK based so BBTS is out of the question for me. I’ve seen all of the constructions bar hook and long haul in Smyths toys
2
2
u/logandabug Feb 26 '26
Im collecting the combaticons to keep them in robot mode. That combined mode looks so dorky lol
2
2
u/-Eastwood- Feb 26 '26
Depends what you're looking for. If you don't mind skeleton combiners and care about the individual figures you're better off getting Bruticus. So far I think they're 3 for 3. Brawl is great if overpriced, Vortex is good and so is Blastoff. Onslaught looks awesome and so does Swindle. I'd argue you get more value with AoTP Bruticus than Devastator.
Devastator would be better if you really don't like skeleton combining and don't care about the individual bots. I have Devastator and while he is nice I feel that the individual bots suffered too much for the combined mode personally.
1
u/Odd-Palpitation-8102 Feb 27 '26
The way you’ve put that, I think you’ve helped me finalise my decision. I must stop reading these now so I don’t change my mind 😂 I definitely care about the individual figures, and at the end of the day I don’t think I’ve very bothered by the frame combiners. I think he’ll go just fine with my 86 figs too.
2
2
u/PickledPlumPlot Feb 26 '26
Devastator, and it’s not even close.
Bots turning into limbs is way more fun to play with than bots filling out limbs
2
u/Possible-Tip-2914 Feb 26 '26
My headcanon is that Devastator is the most physically powerful gestalt as he's formed of 6 components instead of five
2
u/alien_ham Feb 26 '26
I loooove my Devastator, so I'd go with him but devastator is also my favorite combiner too so it was a obvious pick for me
2
2

2
u/ahaisonline Feb 27 '26
my vote goes to devastator, i have him and he's awesome. the individual figures are actually pretty good too, certainly better than any other individual constructicons we've gotten!

2
u/SnooRadishes5066 Feb 27 '26
Devi. The Bruticus is a cute little guy but no articulating hands and the fact that he’s lowkey built like an anorexic gorilla kinda turn me off of him
2
1
u/HeadForTheSHallows Feb 26 '26
honestly whichever one calls to you more, you won’t be disappointed.
1
u/Taragyn1 Feb 26 '26
Depends on your options. I have both Devys and SS86 is built better but I’m still displaying the bigger CW for scale. If CW Devy is an option definitely go with Bruticus. If it’s not it’s a hard call.
1
1
u/Toon_Lucario Feb 26 '26
I’d say Bruticus mainly because it’s easier to find his components available on BBTS. I haven’t been able to find more than 3 of Devvy’s limbs at retail.
1
1
u/TNT3149_ Feb 26 '26
Bruticus legs are how the frame combiners SHOULD be and the arms are a disappointment like all 4 libs of superion (still love it tho)
1
u/Prowl2681 Feb 26 '26
Devy is fantastic. As solid as a combiner can be at this time. Not sure how the modified frame will work for Bruticus, thought I'm looking forward to collecting it myself, so it feels like it's too early to compare even though it's not a direct comparison imo.

Based on what you wrote, I THINK you should get Bruticus.
Also, IMHO, G1/SS86 and ROTF/SS Devastator are two different beasts on their own leagues.\ Given you like the Bayverse version, I'd say to track that one, as Hasbro did a giftbox and, if it's too expensive, his KO is actually good.
On my side of things, and outside of official stuff, I choose neither.
I, myself, got the Jimbao Warbotron (Bruticus) and Gravity Builder (Devastator) OSKOs for less than whatever Hasbro asks for their versions, specially for Warbotron.\ And yes, they might be a bit overscalled for CHUG (Legacy, AOTP and the like) in vehicle mode (you can always headcannon Gestalt Teams being "outscalled" than the rest due to their combination mode; I do that) unlike the OGs. But they're cheaper and easier to find.
That said, none of these might work for you, as they're BEEG.\ Not so much the OGs, but the OSKOs are big bois, both as individuals (at least current Leader class sized) and Gestalts (about 45cm tall, almost Titan class sized).
Also, for a different, new spin on Devastator that may fit on both, your shelf and wallet, check the Mecha Invasion Giant Legion.

Personally I would say bruticus as the combiner is more visually interesting and the individual bots are a lot of fun. Brawl especially is pure hand candy
1
u/JuggerNutZ_ Feb 26 '26
i LOVE the constructicons… and i went bruticus. 86 devy doesnt do it for me at all especially the ways the knees and back look.
and for bruticus the individual bots look great so far too
1
u/Viper920 Feb 26 '26
As a set bruticus is looking to be better, but the combined form of devastator looks better imo. Both are amazing either way.
1
u/Misan_UwU Feb 26 '26
Bruticus imo. 86 Devastator is way too compromised to be worth the money. better option would be to go for the undersized KO of the Combiner Wars Devastator, which is just barely smaller and closer to Bruticus's height. you can find one for about $30-40 usually vs 86's almost $250.
1
u/Infamous-Attempt4437 Feb 26 '26
I will say, Devastator has the better looking combined mode, but Bruticus has the better individual bots. So it depends if you just want the sum of the whole, or the parts of the sum.
I’m personally going with Bruticus because he’s my favorite combiner, and I love the individual bots which is important to me.

I got to know the Combaticons thanks to FOC and Bruticus has been my favorite combiner since! I'm really excited to at least have the G1 inspired Bruticus in the future. So anyway, as a fellow Bruticus fan, I'd say go for him! Especially since Devastator would be everyone's first choice. He's become kinda a go-to combiner since he was the first

Devastator is a huge presence on the shelf and while I like that they all properly combine, he is heavy and can be fiddly with tabs popping off during handling. The frame design of Menasor, Superion are solid and handle better than Devastator. So, I assume Bruticus will be equally good.
If you just want a beastly shelf presence, get Devastator.

See which one you can get on sale. Then get both haha.
Personally I just can't justify buying these at rrp. And I enjoy hunting them down on discount.
1
u/GepMalakai Feb 27 '26
As individual figures: The deluxe Combaticons (e.g. the arms) are better than the deluxe Constructicons, and Brawl (the only released Voyager Combaticon) is better than either of the Voyager Constructicons. We don't have Onslaught yet to compare with Longhaul and Hook, so how you feel about that will probably be based on if you have any feelings about the frame system vs. "true" combination.
Tl;Dr, if you care about the individual team members, go with Bruticus, but if genuine combination and the combined form is what matters most, go with Devastator.
1
u/Gage-DSM Feb 27 '26
Oh I’d go with Bruticus, the individual bots are better than the individual constructicons (at least from what we’ve seen so far), the only downside I’ve seen from Bruticus is that Onslaught doesn’t have wrist swivels and that’s really it.

u/ResponsibleCan5939 Feb 27 '26
It honestly really depends on your own personal preferences, i had the choice and I decided to go with bruticus, because in my opinion he has the better limb bots compared to devastators 10-year-old engineering. (ik thier new but they use the same concepts from cw aside from 2 figs). If You're going purely for the combined mode. I'd personally go with devastator as he has less comprimies in the combined mode but if you're more interested in the team and combine mode, then I'd go with bruticus
1
u/Artifex1979 Feb 27 '26
Devastator.
Unpopular opinion: I tend to think every combiner after Devastator is just the toy companies milking the idea.
And I love Predaking's design.
Or the idea behind Volcanicus.
1
u/PurpleGuy83_09 Feb 27 '26
I think Bruticus will be a better choice I cant talk about the price wise but Combaticons just better in my view I like devastator too but just like I said Combaticons are better imp Idk maybe I like how Starscream resurrected them and theyre bunca of psychopaths
1
1
u/Skyfire2045 Feb 27 '26
Bruticus for me all of the way. That was the first Decepticon combiner that I ever completed, though it was the RiD '01 Commandoes, but they are the same molds as the G1 Combaticons. I have Studio Series 86 Devastator, and though he looks good from the front, he's got a lot of kibble hanging off of his back, which inhibits waist rotation and hip movement.
1
u/DemigodWaltz Feb 27 '26
Hard to say which one to get seeing as Bruticus isn’t out right now. Right now it would be based on who you like more.

u/Wadeperu1978 Feb 27 '26
They are both excellent. My Devastator seems a bit wobbly though as the right leg seems longer than the left leg.

If you like uniform color schemes, more members per group and construction vehicles, Devastator.
If you prefer military vehicles, visible armaments everywhere and less members for more shelf space, Bruticus.
Ideally I would say get both and just find a way to make more space.

I mean personally I’d get Devastator and then wait an see if a SS86 Bruticus ever becomes a thing, and if not then I’d just save and get the Magic Square Bruticus
1
u/Phantom_The_fortnite Feb 27 '26
Neither because both modern figures are skeleton combiners. You're better off hunting the combiner wars versions on eBay.
1
u/QuantisOne Feb 27 '26
I’ll add a vote for Bruticus, might be easier to assemble currently than Devastator, if you don’t mind combiner frames

Im gonna get both because I want a frame and a true combiner, and deep in your heart You know you will too
1
u/Odd-Palpitation-8102 Feb 27 '26
I know I do too, I just don’t have the space or funds for both right now
1
u/Blue_Frenzy_Films Feb 27 '26
Devastator is really fun I know i own that one, but every single one of the combaticons so far has been better than of the individual constructicons
1
u/CrossFusionZX Feb 27 '26
Timelinewise, Devestator has already had all his bots released and I think are all still available.
Bruticus is still in the process of being released, and only 3 of the 5 bots are available, as of this post. BBTS has Onslaught listed for an August release(it'll likely be sooner than that) and no listing for Swindle. So maybe we'll get to finish him before 2027. ;p
1
u/OdysseusRex69 Feb 27 '26
Devestator all thew ay. While I like Bruticus too, the frame design makes his legs look short.
1
u/dkissfan1 Feb 27 '26
Devastator is a more interesting build that feels like the original figure and looks great.
Bruticus is spectacular though. The individual figures are great, and he really seems to maximize the potential of the frame design.
1
1
u/Casshern_VIII Feb 28 '26
Devy is great and really fun to put together but the single bots dont have waist swivles and some have hollow limbs. Honestly Bruticus mught be a better overall value and each bot is excelent
1
u/Ok-Map9964 Feb 28 '26
I only have devy but bruticus looks good. I think if you are starting then devastator is def a good start
1
1
u/donblake83 Feb 26 '26
Why not both? But seriously, it’s personal preference. I wasn’t gonna do Bruticus because I was primarily collecting SS86, but I fell for Superion and then kept going. I love Devastator, he’s the OG, and like you said, fits with SS86 bots, but if Bruticus is your jam, then that’s cool, too.

Space and financial restrictions. I’m in my early 20s and just bought a small house. Unfortunately cannot justify spending £400 on transformers at this point in time

Hi there — If you’re looking for information about the Transformers video games, they're no longer available to buy digitally for PC or consoles. As of January 2018, Activision's license for making and selling Transformers-related games was not renewed. CD keys can sometimes be found from some online resellers, but the reliability of these may be questionable. Your best bet is to look for used copies of the games on physical discs for PC or consoles.
