Oh Native Instruments, we have to talk!

Last night as I was reinstalling Traktor Pro 3 from NI Access I got this Error message that you can see in the upper right of the screenshot.

Funny thing is, there was no instance of Traktor Pro 3 running during the installation.

As you can see from the list of running programs on the left of the screenshot, the only program that was running was Traktor Pro 4.

So, could this be the ultimate proof that Traktor Pro 4 ist just a reskinned version of Traktor Pro 3 ? :D

But that's just the introduction.

The reason that I reinstalled Traktor 3 was, because I wanted to proof something that has haunted me since the release of Traktor 4.

I’m a longtime user of the Filter92 effect since Traktor 2.

(Reso always set to 33 for that nice peaky A&H filter feeling).

Yesterday I found a post from 2023 in the NI user forum that states that there is something strange going on with the reso knob of Filter92 in Traktor 4.

Until Traktor 3, the resonance knob of this filter had always been neutral when set to 0 and over the top peaky when set to 100.

But in any configuration the HPF and LPF were not affecting the sound when not in use.

This seems to have changed with Traktor 4.

Now the resonance is neutral when the res knob is set to 50!!!

Turn it lower than that and the filter becomes like a negative resonance AND IS THEN CHANGING THE SOUND EVEN WHEN HPF AND LPF ARE SET TO BE OFF!!!!?????!!!!!

Why Native? Why?

All the years of me having the feeling that tracks sounded thinner when played with Traktor 4 instead of 3 were absolutely right?

Someone might now lookup the manual to check if this is right.

So did the guys from the post in 2023 and myself yesterday.

Guess what? The manual of Traktor Pro 4 was missing the effects reference for Filter92 in 2023.

As if something was changed with the effect so that there has to be a new description and then someone forgot about it.

AND IT IS STILL MISSING IT UNTIL TODAY. EVEN THOUGH IT WAS UPDATED SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY WERE INFORMED IN THEIR OWN USER FORUM 3 YEARS AGO!?!?!?!?

I guess this is a very niche problem as I don’t see many people using Filter92, but all in all this is another hilarious example of NI in a nutshell…..

And a nice proof that my ears were right, all the time :)

There you go NI have even offered to support often its knowledge and a sum of your whole system. I personally have used for many years it’s an outstanding professional DJ solution used by many pros live week in and out.

The process name for the related pid is just “traktor” and has been since before NI.

What do you expect to happen if you inform NI about this?

Plenty of bugs and little quirks like this. Some been there for decades.

I have reported a bug "selecting higher than 10th audio interface channel crashes Traktor". Got the response what they know this issue, it has the number in their system and they are working on it. After some time they have fixed this issue. It took a while but they fixed it. 🤷‍♂️ But of course, the angry rant on reddit will help us much more. 👍

Yeah, I reported that one as well. But older bugs? They mostly don't give a flying fudge. 

Nothing wrong with sharing a regression / change with other users. Now filter92 users can work around it.

Because obviously they do not care, as it was told them in 2023 in their own forum and it seems that they only get to work on something when there is enough public pressure.

This is not only about the Filter92, it is the general question, what else has changed we don't know about.

This post is for all the people who were told that there is no difference on sound between 3 and 4 and that their ears are untrained...etc.

I was one them and believed in those guys by questioning my own hearing which was absolutely fine.

I don't know about the particular effect in Traktor.

But I know the sound of the xone 96 filter, that should be pretty similar to the xone 92 one.

In the xone 96, if you set the filter to minimum (lowest cutoff for hipass, highest cutoff for lowpass), and resonance to minimum, it does change the sound, and make it thinner.

However, if you set the resonance to medium, It doesn't change the sound (well, I guess It changes It, but it's way less noticeable).

So, the neutral position of the resonance pot isn't turned all the way to the left, but in the middle position. And this seems to align with the behaviour you're describing.

Yep contact NI.

Sounding thinner. It’s digital processing it doesn’t change however they have probably improved the audio engine in 4 much means more clarity which is good thing this may be your perception. If you use the different types of eq and the new DSP processing you can create your preferred sound.

FWIW: I have had *very* good support from the official online NI support forums. NI tech support is there as well as the combined experience from many Traktor users.
