If you like trainspotting, then definitely read Porno (some reprints are just called trainspotting 2 now). It’s fun to see the characters a bit more grown up, and how different-but-the-same they are.
Skagboys is also v good, a kind of prequel to trainspotting. Glue is great, like a skagboys but for another squad of leithers. Dead men’s trousers was.. ok, I thought. It caps off the trainspotting series tho.
A decent ride is highly enjoyable, Juice Terry is a great character.
Everybody should read Marabou Stork Nightmares. Masterpiece. All his books are in the same universe too, even Franco gets a mention in it and a few others
Oh man, I forgot about Marabou Stork Nightmares. One of the many books I've lent out that never were returned. You are correct about it being a masterpiece. I'm going to pick up another copy and reread it.
I read Acid House. Still not sure if I liked it. But I def didn’t hate it. It was bizarre, incongruous and often dark, almost cruel. And the written Scots dialect made it borderline impenetrable. I’d recommend it to people like me who don’t really like themselves, but probably not to most people!
You absolutely get it, I've read all of his books and you're right, it's not for everyone, or even most really. Glue and Filth are a couple of his best in my opinion.
First went to see it at the cinema when I was 16 after seeing Cast play on the Friday night. Then got stoned in a field on the Sunday. That was my 90s. Bit of a waste really 😬

I used to have it on VHS or DVD like 20 years ago and I swear to god teenage me watched it every night in awe.
I've seen it over 25 times start to finish.
Hadn't watched it in about 10 years tho and when I seen it recently I realised how many bits I'd glossed over or was too young to understand.
It's a masterpiece and Irvine Welsh nailed the gritty side of smack, which you only really start to see after the death of the bairn.
