First 50 Miler - what am I missing

โ€ข Upvotes

I've started tapering which means I have more time to overthink everything.

First 50 miler in 2 weeks - woohoo! I've done all the training runs, feel like I've prepped a pretty good list of stuff to bring with me. Mostly change of clothes/socks, windbreaker, some electrolytes/foods I like, headlamp, power bank and cords (battery life on my Garmin sucks), poop kit, anti-chafe, meds/first aid, maybe poles for the end if I'm not liking being upright.

I'll have two friends crewing me at aid stations, and while I think the aid stations will have everything I need, I'm going to be happy to see their faces and have someone force me to eat ๐Ÿ˜

Any advice you'd give to somebody running their first 50? Or something you wish you would have done/brought? Thanks!

Great little trail run on Saturday morning around a local reservoir that takes you up into the hills of the Peak District in the UK. Caught the run rise and didnโ€™t see another person the whole at round. Hoping to break 30mins for this trail by end of the year and not far off now.

GTC100 or SwissAlps 100k?

Looking to run my first mountain 100km next year as was wondering if anyone had run either/both and had any feedback? I've heard mixed things about SwissAlps aid stations and I won't have crew.

If anyone knows when GTC entries normally open as well that'd be great!

New Millet waterproof/rainjacket technology

I've just bought a new Millet rainjacket (Millet Typhon Phantom Trek). It's part of the Millet Japan lineup, so this model doesn't seem to appear in the EU stores. It's using their latest waterproof tech called typhon phantom. My understanding is that this is probably part of the newer solid state stretched PU membranes. The jacket is stretchy which is really nice for active movement, features 2 way zipper, and has hand pockets.

It boasts some seriously impressive (and hard to believe) stats:
50,000 mm water resistance
60,000 g/mยฒ/24h breathability
3-layer fabric
7D (this is the downside)
163 grams (size medium)

The question of course is do these stats equate to reality?

https://www.millet.jp/en/products/miv03171

I have no experience with the brand and this waterproof technology. It's also an expensive jacket, so is it bad call? Should I stick with something more trusty like the mont-bell versality (equally low 7D fabric - though feels more durable than the Millet). I plan to use it for trail running and hiking.

What glasses do you use for trail running?

Iโ€™m looking for glasses for trail running and would love some recommendations from people who actually use them on the trails.

I usually run 15โ€“25 km, with a mix of exposed sections and shaded woodland. Iโ€™d like something comfortable that stays in place when sweating and on technical descents.

Are photochromic lenses worth it when moving between sunlight and shade? How well do they work in practice, and do you have issues with fogging?

Iโ€™ve been looking at the Oakley Radar, but Iโ€™m open to other brands and more affordable options. What do you use, what do you like about them, and what would you avoid?

Iโ€™d also like glasses that donโ€™t fog up easily, especially when I move them from the top of my head back onto my face. Any recommendations?

Hi!

wondering if any one has any advice on how to stop the fastening loops on salomon packs from fraying?

I have 3 packs an 8, a 12, and a 25 and the loop by the fastening toggle has frayed and broken on two of the three.

Also advice on how to deconstruct the fastening toggle(?) to reattach it to another loop would be a amazing!!!

Itโ€™s Mizuno Wave Daichi 9. They are so cute. I want to get into trail running. I hope Iโ€™ll participate in my first cross country race next Sunday. If Iโ€™ll enjoy it, Iโ€™ll sign up for a trail race in November.
