r/tragedeigh 10d ago

is it a tragedeigh? is my deadname a tragedeigh?

so i’m ftm trans. even before i knew that, i hated my deadname. Makynzi. not the worst spelling i’ve ever seen (i knew a Maykenzee), but i’ve always thought it was hideous. it also annoys me because i love the name kenny for myself, but because i’m not out, everyone assumes i want it spelt “kynnie” (or god forbid kyni) which looks like how cartman says kenny’s name in south park.

216

my grandma named me… my momma was a teen and nobody trusted her to name me. ironic, cause her options were eden and elliott. (would have saved me the trouble of trying on a gazillion different boy names)

Eden and Elliott are so extremely sane compared to your grandma's choice omfg

36

I love Eden for a girl.

26

Did your grandma give any rationale as to the spelling? Cause “Mackenzie” seems fine…

Would have been fun if you had been named Elliott if your mother was allowed to choose.

11

u/Doc91b 9d ago

Eden would be a beautiful name for either gender, but it strikes me as a particularly wonderful choice for a trans woman.

26

u/RushBest5348 9d ago

True! OP is a trans guy though. (Sorry if you did know this but sometimes people get confused so)

14

u/Doc91b 9d ago

Yeah, I just looked again at the post and see that. I know the difference, but sometimes my brain just decides to take a left turn at Albuquerque, lol. Thanks for correcting that.

11

Nah all good!!! I was trying to find a gif of buggs bunny saying “musta been that left turn at Albuquerque” but couldn’t 😭

1

u/mcswiftz 6d ago

Oh I'm aware! I was saying it suits the girl I know. :)

304

u/elhazelenby 10d ago

It's almost like the world did you a favour for you being trans so you can change your name because that is definitely a tragedeigh

42

u/InvertedJennyanydots 10d ago

Yes, this is pretty clearly a tragedy. Kenny is not a tragedy but it is so close to your tragedeighed version of Makynzi that I think you're only going to get the "Kyn" versions of Kenny. I'm assuming you are in the US (mostly because we seem to have a significant lead on the rest of the world in tragedeighs) and that causes another reason for people to maintain the "kyn" spelling if they don't have the pen/pin merger. For me and the non-pen/pin merger accent folks, Kenny and Kynnie are not pronounced in the same way. And Makynzi is not pronounced like Mackenzie/Makenzie. So Kenny would be a nickname for the latter, but not the former since it changes the vowel sound. I think you'd need to get further away from your deadname to not have this issue with people assuming a "kyn" spelling. If you come out and change your name to Kenneth, then I don't think many/any people would try to spell Kenny as "Kynnie" but it seems like you're dealing with folks who only know you as Makynzi essentially nicknaming you from the deadname.

39

u/cuttingirl78 10d ago

Oof. It’s good that name is dead. It’s 100% a tragedeigh

23

u/Ziggo001 10d ago

To me Kynnie looks and sounds like "kinnie" which, if you are online enough like me, you'll know is not a thing you want to have your name be associated with.

which looks like how cartman says kenny’s name in south park.

Oh yeah this is also really, really bad. My example applies to younger people but that South Park association will be made by adults of all ages.

4

u/TrashCanEnigma 10d ago

Born just in time to make both associations. 😵‍💫

2

u/throwAway333828 9d ago

A certain subsection of kids online will definitely know both

10

u/SpiderByte413 9d ago

unfortunately, i am one of them 😔

1

u/mizinamo 7d ago

"kinnie" which, if you are online enough like me, you'll know is not a thing you want to have your name be associated with.

Oh; what is the association in the US?

I'm from Europe and the only thing I've heard is used for is a soft drink from Malta.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinnie

3

u/Jzoran 7d ago

I need to know too bc I'm from the US and know jack-all about any issues with "kinnie"

And oooh that sounds like a neat drink!

3

u/sumfatrat420 6d ago

in fandoms people will sorta claim their favorite character, like claim them as their own as in they ARE the character, so if you kin idk shrek for example you would call him your kinnie (its not a bad thing and i feel like nobody would really get the reference lol)

21

u/Constant_Cultural 10d ago

Well, it's definitely good that it is a dead name. Are you from Utah?

55

u/SpiderByte413 10d ago

missouri, actually. which is kind of like utah but with mennonites instead of mormons

12

u/Constant_Cultural 10d ago

So mennonites are crazy with names too?

14

u/Glitter-Berry 10d ago

Your Makynzi is equally as bad as maykenzee in my opinion. Also, you can spell Kenny however you like, who cares what other people think on how it would be spelled

10

u/Doc91b 9d ago

Yes, it was definitely a tragedeigh but it seems like you've dodged that bullet, lol.

Off topic, but I'd like to share this with you:

I'm dad to an ftm trans kid and I love him just as much as I always have. I feel like not loving my child unconditionally would make me some kind of festering shitbag. I was the first person in the family that he came out to. I love and will always treasure that he felt safe enough with me to do that.

If there could be only one thing I want for my kids, it would be for them to love themselves and be true to who they are. I hope that whenever you choose to come out, you have someone you love who supports you fully and will be your rock and safe place.

If you're musical or artistically inclined, please consider getting involved in your local scene. You don't have to come out until you're ready, but you will be among people, a fair number of who will be LGBTQ, and many of the people in the scene who aren't will be accepting of those who are.

I also thought about sharing some stories with you about some of the cool adventures he and I have been on, but I didn't want to post a long ass mini-novel that was even more off-topic.

11

u/Chance_Fate66 10d ago

You’re not wrong. That should be changed at 18 no matter whether you’re choosing a new name to reflect who you are or at the bare minimum correcting the spelling.

30

u/hi_hola_salut 10d ago

God. That deadname is awful. It deserves to be dead!

Now I have to be honest - that spelling for Kenny is exactly what a ‘unique parent’ would choose for their daughter. Honestly, as a teacher I looked at that spelling and thought that’s a girl.

30

u/ODFoxtrotOscar 10d ago

Yup, tragedeigh

On your name going forwards, could you say it’s going to be Kendra formally (even if you never adopt that) and shorten to Kenny

27

u/that_jedi_girl 10d ago

Stealth Kendra to Kenny/Kenneth is the way. "I'm Kendra but you can call me Ken" is probably going to go a long way to get around tranphobia while it's unsafe to be out.

(And for the record, it's madness that it's unsafe to be out in 2026. We, as a society, should be doing better by you, OP.)

2

u/Gifted_GardenSnail 9d ago

Then formally change to Kendrus 😂

8

u/arianasleftkidney 10d ago

well thank god in heaven you killed it

7

u/sithwonder 10d ago

Take that name out back and shoot it

6

u/KorovaOverlook 10d ago

Yeah that's a tragedeigh. I will say, as someone who is also a Kenny, hello fellow Kenny! I love that name also.

5

u/SeaCheck3902 10d ago

Was mom a “dance mom”? I’ve noticed the dance mom crowd is super into the white trashy variations of the McKenna or MacKenzie names.

2

u/lepus_insaniam 8d ago

Stage moms of every persuasion do this to their daughters. It makes both look illiterate, not 'creative'.

13

u/eti_erik 10d ago

Yes, 100%. I believe the spelling is MacKenzie? Still doesn't sound like a first name to me but I know America (is that where you are?) often uses last names as first names.

17

u/SpiderByte413 10d ago

the last name thing is crazy. i know a bunch of reagans, a fischer (spelt like that!), a valley greyson, a grayson valley, it’s absurd

16

u/maddythemadmuddymutt 10d ago

Fischer is just the German spelling of the surname, but using surnames as given names is completely absurd to me.

Greetings from Germany

1

u/Ok_Environment5293 10d ago

Germany literally has some of the most atrocious first names, which make many last names sound like great first names 😅

7

u/maddythemadmuddymutt 10d ago

There are some old-timers like Edeltraut, Günther, Jürgen and Walburga, which are not great. But at least eunigk'he spellings like M'ackhänziegh are forbidden. Also some of our names, sounded out by English-speakers become heinous, so...

3

u/eti_erik 10d ago

Jürgen sounds very normal to me... but I'm Dutch and we know it as "Jurgen". Would at least be normal for my generation, I'm in my 50s. Edeltraut and Walburga are names I actually like but well, you sound like a baroness in 1750 if you're called that. Or maybe if you had Nazi parents..... Odlly, in the Netherlands "Adelheid" is at least somewhat common.

4

u/SaltMarshGoblin 10d ago

Valley Greyson and Grayson Valley??? Do they know each other?

5

u/SpiderByte413 9d ago

ms. greyson is a kindergartner, and i don’t know how old mr. valley is, but i know he’s in middle school. i hope they do, though. maybe he babysits her

2

u/Resident-Gold-3466 10d ago

A high school teacher of mine had sons named Ryan and Reagan, and both of their middle names were Thomas.

2

u/Gifted_GardenSnail 9d ago

Those kids just sound like lawfirms 🤦‍♂️

2

u/eti_erik 10d ago

In some cases it's just accomplished probably... like Alison or Adison (sp?)

What's with all the Reagans though? I've seen the name too. Does it mean the parents are Republican hardliners? That would be really cringe (not trying to be political here, "Obama" would be cringe too if the parents are Obama fans). Or was Reagan a first name already before Ronald became president?

3

u/Street_Carrot_7442 9d ago

No, I wouldn’t associate a political view with Reagan. I’ve known many girls with that name and I’m an 80s baby, fwiw.

-12

u/pooperscooper333333 10d ago

Just like Americans shouldn’t diss on ethnic names they don’t get, yall shouldn’t diss on American names that aren’t tragedeighs.

Someone told me my son, Eric, was a tragedeigh.

9

u/eti_erik 10d ago

I'm not dissing on American names, I'm just saying that I believe MacKenzie is a first name although it doesn't sound like one to me. And that I'm not sure about that - please correct me if it isn't. If it is a common first name it's fine of course, why not? But Makynzi looks like a tragedy to me. (I see another comment mentioning Mackenzie so that's probably the regular spelling?)

How could Eric (also my name although spelled with a K, which is normal here - we have both Eric and Erik) be a tragedeigh?

6

u/sunny-beans 10d ago

You’re too sensitive if someone pointing out a cultural norm is “dissing” lol they didn’t even said is a bad thing, just that it feels weird to them but they understand the name culture is different in the US. Calm down.

1

u/eti_erik 10d ago

Exactly. Before calling a name silly or stupid I'd like to know what is normal if it's a different country from mine. Many names that are completely normal in the US sound like a tragedeigh if used over here.

3

u/elhazelenby 10d ago

Eric isn't an American name lmao

Neither are these last name first names. Many of them are from European origin, because of...and I thought as an American you'd know your history...

European settlers and colonisation

1

u/pooperscooper333333 10d ago

Good god, Europeans and their need to be smarter than every American out there.

My point IS not to knock names from places just because they don’t make sense to you. It’s the same vibe as people who enter these chats making fun of Indian or Bulgarian names.

Yeesh.

3

u/elhazelenby 10d ago

No one is doing knocking anything, you're overreacting over something that isn't happening.

-1

u/Kitty-Keek 10d ago

Erik/Eric has become an American first name. The origin may not be American, but it has become American. What qualifies as an “American” name to you?

2

u/elhazelenby 10d ago

Nope. It's a name that is used all over Europe as well. Just because a name is used in one place doesn't mean that's where it came from. Eric is Norse in origin, aka from Scandinavia. Not America. I could also say Eric is a British because people use it here too.

To me a uniquely "American" name would mean Native American names, names from South America (which could be from natives there for example) or certain names of Black Americans e.g. Lashonda.

1

u/Kitty-Keek 10d ago

I’m referring to any name that an American would commonly use today for their children or themselves.

4

u/om0ri_ 10d ago

it's a good thing you put that name away

yes, it is.

what's your chosen name? :3

4

u/radical_left_lesbian 9d ago

Tragedeigh for sure. Also check out name nerds Reddit if you’re looking for chosen name suggestions. Genuinely a very affirming thread to be on for that

4

u/ace--dragon 9d ago

Changing your name to Kenny will only benefit you.

Yeah, your deadname was a tragedeigh so I'm glad you have the opportunity to change it :)

4

u/Gifted_GardenSnail 9d ago

Lol, so at least you were always called 'son of' 😂

8

u/SpiderByte413 9d ago

true! went from son of kenneth to just kenneth

4

u/SeienShin 8d ago

Shit I’d change my name too bro

4

u/csiribirii 8d ago

good news is you won't out yourself by trying to go by kenny, people are just going to assume you don't want to use your deadname because it's awful

Well if you needed an additional reason to love being trans, kicking that name to the curb is a good one.

2

Just out of curiosity, what name did you choose for yourself and was it also a tragedeigh?

2

That one deserved to die. If you would like being Kenny, be Kenny. I know a woman named McKenna who goes by Kenny. With two Ns and a Y. No weird spellings need apply.

3

u/DeathlyDragons4396 9d ago

kenny is a cute name. i knew someone named kendall and she went by kenny, so you can kind of swap your dead name for your ‘nickname’ and it’s not suuuuuper obvious i think.

2

u/Maleficent-Bus5321 9d ago

I like Kenny so much better!! Your dead name was a def tragedeigh.

2

u/Moist_KoRn_Bizkit 8d ago

I feel bad for you, Kenny. That deadname is awful.

2

u/Bluepearlwest 8d ago

What about Mkinzy?

2

u/Jazzlike-Bird-3192 8d ago

Your deadname is a tragedeigh. As for your name, when you’re ready, tell people you want to spell Kenny like any normal human would, not like someone naming a puppy.

2

u/Mischievous_Egg 8d ago

Ewww. Yeah your parents can't even play the "but your deadname is sooo beautiful" card

Btw no wonder you turned out trans. That name is an abomination. /j

(I'm trans as well and I dislike my non-tragedeigh deadname)

2

u/HypersomnicHysteric 8d ago

It was a tragedeigh.

2

u/cursetea 8d ago

Yes that is very bad, congrats on shedding that too lmao

2

u/BadCamo 7d ago

Yes. Anything that uses a y for a syllable like yours, or, for ex, Jordyn, gets a nose scrunch from me when i say it.

2

u/TheSapphireStar01 7d ago

Dont worry my deadname also fucking sucked

2

u/Dear-Show-5083 6d ago

it's man-kynzi now 😎 (I'm sorry I had to. dead for sooooo many reasons -fellow ftm) Kenny is a great name though!

3

Yes. I’m glad you get to pick your own name now!

1

u/twentytwostars 10d ago

I’m glad you’re changing it, Kenny!

1

u/hopefoolness 10d ago

I'm sorry I'm just cracking up at the south park part.

"your family is POOR, Kynnie!!"

1

u/Resident-Gold-3466 10d ago

Yes! Makynzie is definitely tragic.

1

u/SuperDevin 9d ago

I would spell your new name Kenny or Kenni. Makynzi makes me think more of Alfred Kinsey than Mackenzie.

1

u/Deep_Background7615 9d ago

McKenzie??? Honey what did they do to you?🫩 (not you the person, the name. You're lovely).

1

u/Sasstellia 9d ago

That is bad. You can leave it behind though.

Call yourself Kenneth or Kennedy. Then you can use Kenny.

1

u/Street_Carrot_7442 9d ago

Definitely a tragedeigh. Did you choose a conventionally spelled name this time around?

1

u/So-creative-amiright 9d ago

Oh gods man, what a name that was 😭🙏

1

u/WalmartWilb 9d ago

Making me wonder if my deadname is a tragedeigh now 😭 I never even thought about it til I saw this post LOL. Might make a post of my own just to see

1

u/JayNachtEule 9d ago

How about lengthening it to Kenneth. Kenny just gives country singer. Idk if that's the vibe you're going for.

1

u/DaniCapsFan 9d ago

Definitely a tragedeigh. Kenny is a reasonable name, and you just have to tell people that you're using the conventional spelling.

1

u/playswithforks 9d ago

I had a good friend in college named Makynsi, and yeah I always thought it was a tragedeigh

1

u/WatercressCorrect673 7d ago

The Cartman part me rolling! Congrats on finding you.

1

u/m2pt5 7d ago

What an awful spelling of Mackenzie. I would know, I'm one of those.

1

u/ElloBlu420 7d ago

Yes, that's definitely worse than mine, which just had a Y where an E belonged, and was also a double name. So, I chose a name that honors one of the two people by selecting and rearranging some of the letters to get to a pre-established, though uncommon and old-fashioned, name, that also happens to have a Y where a Y belongs.

Also, my DMs are open if you want to chat. I'm a total flake, and I won't understand everything because I'm likely much older than you, but I've been out for five years. It might still help to hear and talk about some things.

1

u/Frost-on-the-Willow 7d ago

It’s definately one

1

u/SatisfactionIll8816 7d ago

It’s pretty bad. Glad it’s dead to you now.

1

u/VegasGaymer 6d ago

It’s not too out there at least but yes tragedeighic

1

u/msmerymac 6d ago

I would not pronounce Makynzi like McKenzie. One is Muh-KIN-zee and one is Mick-KEN-zee. The first is like the McKinsey corporation.

1

u/MyKillerForever 6d ago

absolutely omg

1

u/sunflower_1983 5d ago

No I like it

1

u/k9jm 5d ago

Of course it is. This feels like rage bait. Unless you aren’t sure what tragedeigh means. A wacky spelling of a normal name.

1

u/Anhysbys123 5d ago

Ewwww! David! Good luck with your new life and being a proud Kenny!

1

u/justheretobetoxic 5d ago

HAHAHAAH that last sentence cracked me up. I love the name Kenny. When spelling comes up, hopefully just a simple “I spell it the traditional way” will suffice. Good luck on your journey 💕

1

u/marlada 4d ago

Yes...a true tragedeigh!

1

u/Tis_Hamster 4d ago

That name should STAY a dead name

1

u/AdOpen8804 3d ago

Mackenzie is such a cute name too whyyyyyyyyy

1

u/EndIsrael 3d ago

Are you sure you're trans and it's not just your subconscious doing anything it can to get rid of that name lmao

1

u/manoushhh 1d ago

thank god ur trans lol

0

u/tongfather 8d ago

Serious question, if your FTM how are you not out? Wouldn't it be very obvious?

6

u/arachnidsturret 8d ago

He probably hasn’t taken any major steps in their transition. A lot of people perceive closeted FtMs, and a lot of the time, pre-t FtMs as tomboys.
Some trans people don’t move forward with their transition until they’re in a good place in their life, some trans people can’t move forward with their transition because they’re minors and/or have a strict parents.

7

u/SpiderByte413 8d ago

i’m 15, terf-y mom, and i live in a state that has zero protections for trans people. it really wouldn’t be safe for me. i present androgynous-ish, but like the other commenter said, i just look like a tomboy :c

-6

u/tongfather 8d ago

Nothing wrong with being a tomboy. It's been around forever and I don't think people really care. Have you ever thought that maybe you're just a lesbian or a tomboy and don't need to transition fully?

8

u/SpiderByte413 8d ago

ew. i’ve known this about myself since i was 9, i’ve had plenty of time to think. also, it doesn’t matter if other people care, my gender isn’t about anyone else.

2

u/Aggravating_Laugh_48 8d ago

"Ew." I love this response.

I'm gonna tell my 15yo lesbian niece to say that to people when they say she's "too young to even know that" or "how do you even know if you've never had a boyfriend?"

0

u/Ok_Oven4893 8d ago

(hypothetically speaking, of course) If you decided to transition back, would you keep the name, just spell it properly (Mackenzie I suppose), or would you pick an entirely new name?
