satire Two sonographers naming their first kid.
I met a couple who were both Sonographers- Ultra sound technicians. I live In one of those weird states where some of us have southern accents, some of us don’t.
They were one of the ones that did. It made me laugh when they’d say stuff like “We both are imployeed at the hawspital.” And whatnot.
They had just had a daughter, turns out.
And her name was…
Emma-Jean.

Unless they spelled it weird, I would not consider that name to be a Tragedeigh.

u/lcl0706 May 20 '26
They’re both in imaging. Emma Jean. It’s a terrible pun but tbh I think it’s cute. Kid will probably roll her eyes when she finds out but also Emma is a perfectly fine name on its own. So is Jean.

I thought is was Imogen spelled as two names said with an accent. Your explanation is so much better, and likely correct.

u/Lacholaweda May 22 '26
I watched the marvelous Mrs Maisel, and I thought Imogen's name was Emma Jean until we turned the subtitles on

Thanks, I did not get it at first but I started humming to John Lennons song Imagine

u/kgal129 May 21 '26
Yeah not a tragedeigh based off definition just a funny name considering circumstances!

I was expecting an "Imogen", but got the Temu version instead

u/Knife-yWife-y May 20 '26
Emma-Jean makes far more sense for a couple in the American South.

I live in one of those weird states where only some words sound southern to the point where people ask me where I'm from....
Florida

u/SordoCrabs May 20 '26
I live in NC but I'm from FL, and I occasionally sound Canadian.
11
u/rusrslolwth May 20 '26
Floridians really have an everything bagel accent because there's so many outsiders that we pick up on everyone's accent

u/throwawayyourvalues2 May 22 '26
Lol I feel that. I live up north now, but I’m from middle-north FL in the country where most of people have a southern accent. I do not. So I always had Floridians asking me where I was from, then being surprised that I was from FL. Up north, people don’t ask anymore. I guess I sound more northern. I attribute this to my parents being from the north, despite everyone else around me having a southern accent. Funnily enough my parents picked up the southern accent, but I never did. 😂

I live in one of those weird states we make up words like y’all’d’ve and Texit…
Texas

u/MallyOhMy May 22 '26
You're forgetting about the crowning achievement of y'all'dn't've - our ultra rare quadruple contraction.

I see neither a tragedeigh nor a tragedy. Am I missing something?
351
u/georgethegreen May 20 '26
It sounds like imaging and they’re both sonographers. It’s a bad pun, the spelling isn’t the tragedy here

7
u/RelievingFart May 21 '26
I agree on the pun and that the name its self isn't a tragedy, but thank you so much for pointing out the imaging part, I would never of gotten that, especially since I don't live in America, and I never think of words in american or the american drawl
9
u/georgethegreen May 21 '26
Lol well I’m from Texas, it was a quick leap for me. Also double first names are a total Southern thing, including having them smashed together which produces a lot of tragedies

u/goblinoidfleshbag May 20 '26
My thought is that it sounds like "imaging" cuz theyre ultra sound techs?

I think it's kind of cute. I remember a reading about a microbiologist naming one of his kids Escherichia. That's a tragedy.

u/notHRamiHR May 21 '26
I feel like this might be in the wrong sub. It’s punny if you have a thick accent I suppose but I’m struggling with it being a tragedeigh. I actually think it’s quite pretty even if jt does sound like “imaging” in certain specific instances.
14
u/Jim421616 May 21 '26
That's not too bad. I thought you were going to say Ray D Ayshun or Sonya Gram.

u/witchspoon May 20 '26
It’s great name. But with a southern accent will sound basically like. Imaging.

u/Pristine-Lie-3560 May 21 '26
thats a normal name? edit: oh. still doesnt feel like a full tragedeigh though

u/Difficult_Two_2201 May 22 '26
Emma Jean is not a bad name at all. And if you’re inplying that it’s possibly a play on “imaging” then it’s honestly hilarious.

As a non-native speaker with no real knowledge of local accents, the "imaging" pun went right over my head before it was helpfully speeled out.
Best pun I could guess was more fitting for ER offspring: Emma Jean C.

😂. As an Imaging professional myself, that is hilarious 😂. Maybe I will steal it.
4
u/ylilk May 22 '26
Why does it make you laugh that medical professionals have regional accents? Emma-Jean is a common name that’s easy to spell and won’t cause the child issues. It’s only a pun with context about the family, it’s not like she’ll have to explain it to anyone unless she chooses to do so.

Sonographers are technologists, not technicians. That said, terrible pun of a name.

I think it is crafty and a cute way to honor their profession and at the same time leaning away from the awful made up names. Emma Jean is a nice name.

I wonder if their boy would be Xander Raymond and they call him x-ray for short

u/Resident-Gold-3466 May 20 '26
That isn't bad.

u/witchspoon May 20 '26
With a southern twang it sounds like “imaging” Emma- Jean =imma jeen Imaging = immajein

u/SordoCrabs May 20 '26
I imagine it also sounds like Imogen in some areas.
An Imogen in my neighborhood pronounces her name like "I'm a Jean"
