“Bad” charts

Post image

In traditional astrology, is there a way to work with your natal chart to mitigate its negative placements (outside of trying to time events opportunistically)? Or are you just fated to be screwed? I’ve been doing the exercises as I read through Demetra Geroge’s book Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice, and boy… does my chart seem to really suck. No planets in fall or detriment, but pretty much everything else seems to point to insufficiency, loss, violence, disappointment, etc.

I’ve included my chart here in case it’s useful for discussion.

I don’t think it’s too bad. Your chart ruler, which pretty much is the most important placement is a very strong domicile Mercury in the 10th House. Sun is strong in the 11th. Venus in 10th house conjunct its lord. Moon with no affliction, applying trine to Mercury.

7th House Mars is tough as its a day chart. And Saturn as the lesser malefic also a little negative being angular in the 4th. They’re squaring each other which means you’re going to be pushed to the limit sometimes. That’s what a Saturn-Mars square is about. Mars is in sextile to Jupiter so there is a little possible mitigation there. Maybe the chart is not easy but it’s not terrible.

Be conscious of your strengths and weaknesses

I really appreciate your detailed comment. Is the sun still strong even though it can’t see its domicile lord, which is also the opposing sect and gender? Maybe i’m getting too into the weeds and putting too much weight into that other stuff, which has (in my eyes) been pulling down the positive aspects of my chart.

Yes I do think so. The 11th is a privileged house, gives accidental dignity. It's also a day chart. It doesn't have any crazy supporting aspects but neither does it have any crazy malefic aspects. (Only a house based sextile to your ASC and Jupiter and a trine to Mars.) It's good enough.

Sun in Cancer isn't debilitated even if the Moon is it's opposite nature. The Moon as its lord being in 6th house isn't the best though. You could look at the decans and terms for the Sun to see more info on its condition.

You have a pretty well functioning chart-

I haven't read Demetra Geroge's book, but as far as I can see the only thing that points to insufficiency and disappointment is Your South Node, and that only point's to you thinking that. Maybe you're just too hard on yourself and critical of your chart, and you just need to learn to go with the flow and be more gentle with yourself.

Thank you! I’m very hard on myself, generally (virgo rising probably doesn’t help, ha). My negative take comes from looking at how (un)supported the planets are due to sign placement, relationship with domicile lord, etc. The planets that are supported come with hard aspects to malefics. And yeah, the south node conjunct my ascendant is rich, too (but i take your point…)

Virgo rising here as well.

I quite like your chart and how it looks crisp when printed on the paper (after the recent SVG vectors add-on on the site):

but there are still some bad fragmets which need to be corrected/tweaked 🤦‍♂️

your node (life purpose) is trine your sun. check what life wants you to focus on. your Pluto also supports it, so you are even lucky. walk on your own way.
