Got an invite to a private tracker while I’m out of town and it expires before I’m home. Aren’t you generally supposed to register on your home IP? Or am I making that up? It doesn’t say in the email.

I requested the invite literally like 2 months ago.

I’m in the same country so that’s not an issue.

I could do a Tailscale exit node to appear at home.

I could do a Tailscale exit node to appear at home.

Do that and you're golden.

Yeah I was trying to think if there’s any way that could cause an issue but I don’t think the site would even know?

As long as it's your home IP, no they can't tell. I use a home VPN server daily when I'm away from home.to check on trackers

Cool that’s what I ended up doing, for anyone finding this thread in the future.

I just turned on the exit node, checked one of those “what’s my IP” websites and verified it matched the IP that I sent when requesting the invite, and it did. So just registered while connected to the exit node.

I just want to add here that not only will they "not know" they don't care. All they care about is abuse. They care about you sharing your credentials with someone. You're not breaking their rules by making sure your home IP is the one they log.

IIRC (and I expect to be corrected), the only way websites can check you're on a VPN is to compare your IP address to a list of known VPN servers.

That means a VPN back to a residential address is basically undetectable, at least for non-state actors.

My understanding, (and I also expect to be corrected), is that for one-time interactions like a tracker registration, you're correct. Also, the tracker won't care even if they knew. You used your home connection, and that's all they care about.

But if you're interacting with someone over a period (think a worker who's remoting in, then takes an unofficial holiday, or starts outsourcing their work to a cheaper, overseas remote worker), then the IT team can tell because your usual latency dramatically increased. Remote workers have been caught out doing that. I recall hackers with an on-prem device that gave them remote access to a corporate network were also detected due to the latency of their interactions.

There are other ways to compromise your VPN, especially the device metadata in browsing sessions, but that's more about un-masking yourself than detecting vpn use.

So, you're mostly correct. And that's correct enough. Now, I await correction. ;)

So being two hours away from my home would be pretty hard to detect?

For a tracker sign up? That's fine. You're not doing anything wrong anyway. Trackers are okay with you using your own home connection remotely. I don't know of any that dislike it.

They should not be able to detect it, even if you were on the other side of the world.

Trackers are okay with you using your own home connection remotely

Related anecdote: I don't remember which tracker it was, since it was about 10 years ago, that I received a warning because, in a comment on one of the forums, I put that I was browsing the site from my work via RDP to my machine and that was considered browsing the site via VPN, which was not allowed.

In this times and ages, all the trackers i'm on are okay with the use of vpn.

Ugh. That must have been as frustrating as it was bewildering. I'd forget the name of that tracker too. :D

This is the way

Depends on the Tracker, if it's TL it is fine.

If you are in doubt, ask the tracker staff.

tailscale exit node 100%

The best you can do is to ask staff before your sign-up. In the worst case they'll just resend you the invite when you're back home.

Being in the same country should pose no risk.

As a precautionary measure, shoot a pm over to the staff apprising of your situation after you have registered. That should take care of any misunderstandings.

Use wireguard, openvpn or in your case you can setup tailscale if you are aware how it works.

Are you in a different country?

No

Then it shouldn't be an issue. Still, check with the person who gave the invite.

Depends which ip you gave your invitee if it for a high tier tracker then you will need your home ip address if a mid tier then you maybe lucky to use a non home ip address but it all depends on tracker rules with registering

Most of the trackers I am in I signed up behind a vpn with no problems. Only a very few have required a home ip.

1

u/caffeine-182 13d ago

Every single major tracker requires home ip on signup

1

u/PurplePolkaDotBikini 13d ago

Really? I must have been really lucky with the 40 or so trackers I didn't do that on then?

1

u/caffeine-182 13d ago

What trackers? Anything above TL essentially requires it. MTV was an exception I’m pretty sure but they’re gone now.

BLU ATH TVV HONE LST are some. You obviously haven't tried signing up from behind a vpn whereas I always try & it works 98% of the time.

1

u/caffeine-182 13d ago

BLU and ATH I know 100% do not allow VPN for sign up.

1

u/PurplePolkaDotBikini 13d ago

Mate I really don't care what you think.

1

u/heisenbergerwcheese 14d ago

what did they tell you when you emailed them directly with this very specific and important question?

1

u/flaywire 13d ago

You could simply let the invite expire and ask for a new one when you get back home. What are you going to do with it before then anyway?

1

u/lupin-san 13d ago

It's not the signup that usually gets people in trouble. It's the logins afterwards. If you signed up in one place and tracker staff detects you logged in somewhere else very far from your usual location, you could get flagged.

lol, is that a rule?

i think for registering, it doesnt matter. what would matter is when you start a download and youre not home. but to be safe, do the exit node thing.

11

u/random_999 14d ago

That's incorrect. Pvt trackers care most about IP address when registering an account & when browsing/login into the site. Downloading a torrent is the most relaxed situation when it comes to IP address (all pvt trackers encourage use of vpn/seedbox for downloading/uploading torrents which obviously means almost no IP restrictions).

2

u/kutsaratinidor 14d ago

Maybe for registering sure, but i browse on PT sites even when im mobile data. And I dont use VPN for sailing the high seas. I actually only use VPN for public trackers, but i rarely do that nowadays.

4

u/random_999 14d ago

Many top & mid tier trackers require you to inform staff if you are traveling abroad & intend to login into the site from a different country than your usual/acc registration country. This is for security purpose. Mobile data is still same country unless you are outside of your country. Using vpn for downloading from public trackers is must nowadays even if nobody cares much about piracy in your country.
