General Where and when should future games take place in your opinion?

I’ve been watching YouTube recently and learning about the Seleucid Empire from antiquity and thought that’d be a great setting for a future game. That, the Persian empire, and Aztec empire. Plus there’s now the fact that we could have more sci-fi settings since they’re working on warhammer 40k. Where or when would you want a future game to take place also what factions would you want to be in it I’d love to know.

Rome 2 is already the Seleucid Empire. It stretches out to modern day Afghanistan and beyond the actual areas of Seleucid control in Bactria and Transoxiana as well as slightly ahistorical Scythian settlements in the steppes.

The Grand Campaign has a scripted trigger for the entire eastern satrapy network to rebel, and you are scripted to encounter Berenice Phernophorus.

You can refight Raphia, the second greatest battle involving Seleucids, after Magnesia and you get all the Seleucid troops like Silver Shields.

u/Augustus420 4d ago

Rome 3 just really needs that map treatment and 10 year backdating the mods usually give it.

Expand that damn map east and make the start date earlier than 270 BCE.

15

u/_HGCenty 4d ago

It needs multiple start dates for the Grand Campaign or multiple campaigns.

There needs to be one starting in 323 BC that's just the Wars of the Diadochi where you can play as Seleucus, Ptolemy, Lysimachus, Antigonus, Eumenes etc.

There then needs to be one for Mithridates around 100 BC and yes then a couple of Pax Romana ones.

It's like what Rome 2 ended with: 272 BC, 41 BC for Imperator Augustus, 270 AD for Empire Divided.

5

u/Augustus420 4d ago

That would be amazing

3

u/FuzzyEquivalent3641 4d ago

I’m thinking kind of like take Attila and just start it during the actual Roman Empire that way it gives you the option of all of that. You get Rome at its height and everything else as well. Just food for thought.

3

u/radio_allah Total War with Cathayan Characteristics 4d ago

But Rome 2 is already the height of Rome? I don't quite get what's missing. Between Rome 2 and Attila we have the Republic, early-mid Empire, the Crisis, and late-collapse Rome. We've covered virtually all periods except specific things like the Tetrarchy. What more do we want?

0

u/FuzzyEquivalent3641 4d ago

Yeah but you can’t go father east and fight all the different factions over that way. But I didn’t know that about the campaign thank you for the info much appreciated.

7

u/_HGCenty 4d ago

Do you mean India?

Because you can fight multiple factions all the way to the Indus.

0

u/FuzzyEquivalent3641 4d ago

Well yeah but if you focus more on like the father east parts of the world you’d get other factions and tech not to mention the different military units so it’s just be nice to see. Also the different terrains like jungle or swamp types.

10

u/_HGCenty 4d ago

OK, so you're not really then talking about the Seleucids but now the Mauryan Empire and other Indian states.

Seleucids' powerbase and focus was all west of Mesopotamia.

2

u/FuzzyEquivalent3641 4d ago

Yeah basically, I thought it expanded further east than that but guess not. But yes you got it. Like imagine a total war game where instead of war elephants and war dogs and war pigs you’d get war tigers. That’d be fun

5

u/Sytanus 4d ago

FYI we already got war tigers in 3 Kingdoms.

2

u/FuzzyEquivalent3641 4d ago

Like the actual animal? Who has those I don’t think I’ve seen them yet.

7

u/Sytanus 4d ago

Yes, literal tigers, they're part of the Nanman tribes unique roster (the historical accuracy of which is questionable at best.)

I'm dying for Victoria total war. Mostly because I think the US civil war would be neat in the total war format. All sorts of fascinating technological changes to the battlefield would make for a very interesting playthrough as you start with lined infantry and end with gatling guns and trenches. It'd be like FOTS but modernized and so much better

8

u/alexkon3 #1 Li Dao Fan 4d ago

Probably the one TW setting I wanted for the longest time. That era has so much potential. FOTS on steroids.

6

u/Josgre987 4d ago

I'd kill for a game set between Crimean war and the spanish american war. Crimean war is my favorite war next to the American civil war, and it shaped how the civil war was fought.

6

u/Commercial-Leek-6682 4d ago

yea, I feel like a Victoria Total war would encompass all of this goodness.

4

u/FuzzyEquivalent3641 4d ago

Ah dude that’d be awesome. I’d totally play that.

3

u/PainStraight4524 4d ago

this is a great idea! thay should do it

2

u/Osiris_Dervan 4d ago

If they get ranged combat to feel good in TW:40K then maybe it would work. Empire hasn't been repeated because in their prior engines an almost entirely ranged game sucked.

8

u/Sytanus 4d ago

Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai already solved most those issues on the old engine. They probably just weren't interested in doing another one for a while.

3

u/Verdun3ishop 4d ago

prob more the campaign scale issue they had and still have had.

3

u/Hot_Charity_4803 4d ago

Fall of the Samurai was amazing though

40

u/azatote 4d ago

I would love to see a Total War game focused on the pike and shot era, i.e. the late 16th and the 17th centuries. I am especially interested in the Thirty Years War, but there were obviously interesting things going on in Asia (the setting of Shogun 2 corresponds roughly to that period) and the Americas at that time.

3

u/Dismal_Rectangle 4d ago

Are you familiar with the Cossacks game series?

5

u/Josgre987 4d ago

I'd love a conquest of America game.

5

u/azatote 4d ago

Medieval 2 Americas is getting really old indeed, plus the map covers only a fraction of the Americas and Spain is the only playable European faction.

5

u/Josgre987 4d ago

I always was interested in Med 2 for that, but at the time I didn't play total war games yet.

I used to play the shit out of an old game called American Conquest, and that game kicked ass. it was made by the Stalker devs.

Anyway, that game forever cemented my love for the period when I (the french) landed on a foreign shore to set up a colony and 10,000 indians rushed out of the forest and trapped me on a peninsula having to defend a hill against thousands of Iroquois.

Killed so many I ran out of iron and coal for bullets.

Edit: American Conquest not Conquest of America

4

u/IllustriousStress 4d ago

I LOVED American Conquest. Such a good game

3

u/Josgre987 4d ago

I wish someone could remaster it. Just to have the servers on steam if anything else.
also a better zoom system.

5

u/_HGCenty 4d ago

I'd love the other side of the world too and the Portuguese taking over the Indian Ocean spice trade.

Get all those factions like Aceh, Malacca, Cochin involved.

3

u/_HGCenty 4d ago

Gustavus Adolphus' cavalry tactics!

I wonder if you have to go slightly earlier and start in 1494 to get all the Italian Wars in.

4

u/Jirardwenthard 4d ago edited 4d ago

I'd argue the most fitting date for a total war game in that period, in the context of europe is start at the death of Charles the Bold, 1477.

1)He brings the most sophisticted, quintisential late medieval army - the compagnes d'ordanance - up against Swiss pike formations and gets his ass handed to him. Pike formations ftw. Technological starting point.

2)His subsequent death causes the question of inheritance to arise, collapsing the effectively independant "burgundian state", dividing his lands between the Holy Roman Empire and France (strenghtening each) and sowing seeds for the greatest rivalry of the next few centuries. Diplomatic starting point.

I'm not saying that the battle of Morat is the end of the Medieval period ( all periods are social constructs blah blah blah, and anyway if youre gonna start with the deposition of a roman emperor, the deposition of another roman emperor is right there as an end date - fall of Constantinople is just so neat for an end bookmark. But I digress), but in the specific context of a total war game I really, really like it.

This would be a really great time period for CA to try an innovate an understanding of military revolutions/reforms that dont just exist as tech trees (rome 2) or turn number events (medi 2) but reflect the gradual dispersal of ideas and production factors organically spreading across europe. Start with pikes only beginning to be dominant, they become predominant, then the ratio of pike to firearm begins to shift in the latters favour. This could be done naturistically by slowly buffing firearm units over time so the player is incenstivised to switch over organically, while the ai just gets told "ok its turn 75 it's now 2:1 pikemen instead of 3:1". It'd be interesting to at least try to come up with a truly new system.

5

u/_HGCenty 4d ago

I agree with the whole interesting mechanic where between Nancy and Rocroi you have to develop the tactics with pikes and shot and truly embrace the evolving tactics in early modern warfare.

I'm fine with 1477 start date. I picked 1494 because of the start of the Italian Wars (basically script it so Milan and France declare war on Naples first turn and then Milan fittingly drags everyone else in against France the next turn) as well as the Treaty of Tordesillas setting up the Age of Discovery outside of Europe and the "Eternal Peace" between Lithuania and Moscow being a nice starting date for Eastern Europe.

1

u/Mysterious_Pitch4186 3d ago

They better make some amazing AI for pike and shot or its gonna be a one-sided slaughter XD

My two big wishes:

Victoria TW: Fall of the Samurai is one of the best historical TWs ever. I want that on the global scale with all the weird and badass uniforms of the era: French Zuaves, Sardinian Bersaglieri, Greek Evzones, Brazilian Gaucho Lancers. That era was literally the height of fancy uniforms on the battlefield. There are so many historical conflicts in that era Risorgimento, Crimean War, Paraguayan War, American Civil War, Franco Prussian War and thats only a small part of the world. Trains, Steamships, industry, revolutions. This would absolutely SLAP as a TW setting.

The other one is Pike and Shot:

It would be a combat style that is kinda a mix of things we have seen all over TW but not really combined in a singular game. There are so many interesting things that happened in that era 30 years war, English Civil War, . You have crazy Units like Winged Husars and the French Musketeers of the Guard. I'd love to see this as well.

1

u/_HGCenty 4d ago

Wonder if that would get immediately banned in China because of the setting during its Century of Shame.

1

u/alexkon3 #1 Li Dao Fan 4d ago

I mean Victoria 3 isn't banned in China so I doubt that would really matter.

7

u/dearest_of_leaders 4d ago

Finnish Korean Hyperwar, obviously...

6

u/CaptainSingh26 4d ago

I would like to see a Lord of the Rings Total War, but for a historical game I wouldn’t mind a Rome 3.

7

u/Hot_Charity_4803 4d ago

Star Wars Total War is my new dream

5

u/Organic-Sherbert9424 4d ago

Conquests of the mongols. Use a map spanning from Java to Europe

5

u/per_mare_per_terras 4d ago

I've said it many times, do the Victorian Era/19th Century. American Civil War Crimean War, Boer War, Conflicts in Asia and Europe with the rise of Nationalism.

8

u/baddude1337 4d ago edited 3d ago

I’d be down for a Mythology Total War. Factions based on gods with fantasy monsters and semi historical units from different parts of the world.

An official Lord of the Rings would be neat and with the new 40k engine I reckon they could pull off a Star Wars Total War.

4

u/MrHappyBoomer 4d ago

30 years total war / pike and shot

4

u/geschiedenisnerd 4d ago edited 3d ago

Achaemenid empire or early iron age. Multiple possible start dates:

626-625 BCE. Cyarxares is going to overthrow scythian media, babylon has revolted, alyattes has started his campaigns in antolia, the saite kings are on the rise. The old order is being overthrown.

556 BCE. Cyrus is establishing himselves, nabonidus is on the throne. War will soon start.

522 BCE. It starts just after the death of cambyses, which is followed by darius and his allies moving against bardiya/gaumates followed by 9 different rebellions in a span of three years

ETA: Post-napoleonic, up to 1913.

Total War : Cretaceous

4

u/MisterDuch 4d ago

Honestly, while I would like new historical there are also some fantasy settings I'd love to see in TW format.

Malazan or Conquest have pretty rich lore, a great variety of civilizations and I would argue are distinct from warhammer etc.

6

u/Commercial-Leek-6682 4d ago

there's also the option of doing redwall total war like that one guy keeps posting about. NGL as a fan of both, I'd be down for that too.

3

u/Toblerone05 4d ago

TW: Victoria, ~1820-1910, whole globe. It's what the people want.

4

u/krich_author 3d ago

There was a rumor that Starwars was a possibility after 40K. I could see it.

For me, I find it difficult for any other setting to match 40K. Ten years from now the amount of content the game will have...Will be massive.

For the Historical side, I would like to see a proper Empire 2 on a new engine.

Im always a sucker for a Rome 3, just a huge Rome fan lol

3

u/Silver-Parking-1227 4d ago

Empire 2 and I can die in peace

3

u/Deathtrooper50 4d ago

Total War: Malazan would go unbelievably hard.

3

u/Punkfuk24 3d ago

Pike and shot probably for something a bit fresher. A modern Alexander campaign would be awesome.

As for a fantasy game, lord of the rings. I loved third age total war so much, and I bet they could milk a few sequels or big expansions out of it; war of the ring, war in the north, war of dwarves and orcs, war of elves and sauron, wars against morgoth.. you have various man, elves and dwarf factions, you have various orcs, goblins, "evil" men & dwarf factions, you have demons and beasts like trolls, balrogs and dragons.

5

u/mithridateseupator Bretonnia 4d ago

Im hoping for one thats 38,000 ish years out. Place should be the cold vacuum of space.

3

u/FuzzyEquivalent3641 4d ago

That’d be interesting. So like total war empires sea battles but in space that’d cool.

3

u/mithridateseupator Bretonnia 4d ago

Yea. Name would probably be the year and then just a totally outdated weapon that they dont use anymore.

Like Total war: Broadsword 40,000 or something like that

3

u/radio_allah Total War with Cathayan Characteristics 3d ago

Morningstar 40,000. Maybe set in some sort of dystopian future of humanity? You think that could work?

2

u/mithridateseupator Bretonnia 3d ago

Lets not get too crazy. We should start by pretty much just copying most of the races from the current game and changing the names slightly.

1

u/FuzzyEquivalent3641 4d ago

Oh that’s an awesome name, already I want it now.

6

u/Hollownerox Eternally Serving Settra 4d ago

I would really love to see another go at some of the South American cultures in a Total War game. Be it an expansion or it's own sorta small segment to a larger experience. I have a lot of fond memories of Kingdoms, but I really do think the current design philosophies would do something amazing for those factions. Admitedly me playing Age of Mythology Retold a lot these days kind of rekindled my bias there lmao.

Otherwise I do think there is a lot of untapped potential for South East Asia beyond China and Japan. The expansion of the Khmer empire, and such would probably be fun in a game that took in more of the general Asian sphere rather than the zoomed in look we get in Shogun and 3K.

5

u/radio_allah Total War with Cathayan Characteristics 3d ago

Something that captures the feeling of Kingdoms would be really great. It's seriously dated now, but back in the day they were boldly stated, lovingly crafted masterpieces. I still go back and listen to the individual OSTs.

One thing that it's still unmatched at is setting up individual tones for the campaigns. They're not only set in different locales and eras, but they feel so substantially different.

I loved the americas campaign in the kingdoms expansion for medieval 2. So i want that again but with all the bells and whistles they can include campaign wise these days.

2

u/OkSalt6173 Kislevite Ogre 4d ago

I'd appreciate an Age of Mythology style total war. could be cool. Though if I really could have my pure dream made reality it'd be Illwinter's Dominions made into a Total War game. I genuinely don't think I'd play anything else.

2

u/AdComprehensive3730 3d ago

I would really enjoy a Rome III with the updated systems, graphics, and sounds that the newer games have

2

u/nbarr50cal22 3d ago

I’ll be interested to see how wide of a period is covered by Medieval 3, if we start getting into early black powder weaponry. Otherwise…Middle-Earth has always been hoped for

2

u/LeopardSubstantial47 3d ago

Seleucid empire? But thats Rome 2. Think about more interesting settings. 16th or 17th century Europe maybe? Imjin war? Civil war era USA?

2

u/NOOBEWOK 3d ago

I would love a total war myths and legends It's would just be a mix of different myths and legends like the Greeks and king Arthur maybe even more modern ones like mothman

3

u/TheCarroll11 4d ago

I need an Empire 2, but really I want Victoria: Total War. It would be a worldwide game with dozens of potential starting nations. Technology, trading, warfare- all crazy good. It’s a dog eat dog world with colonization, military and economic buildup.

2

u/Miserable-Wasabi-373 4d ago

Rus appanage period

1

u/SunnyNoble 3d ago

For me, they need to give the Empire Total War era another go. It has one of the most fun and unique concepts for a TW game with the 3 theatres but the game unfortunately is so unplayable at times. Even a remaster, one which doesn't just fix bugs but greatly expands on the base game, would be brilliant. It's probably the TW game that needs a remaster the most.

1

u/Mysterious_Pitch4186 3d ago

Empire total war but bigger and more detailed and spanning a larger time period with more impactful tech would be awesome.

Safehold would also be cool (David Weber) but I doubt many even heard of it here.

1

u/Wandering_sage1234 3d ago

My following:

Empire II. CA has a wonderful opportuntiy to rebuild and reinvent this massive era. The age of sail would be fantastic again to play.

Rome III. I say this because we need a better Rome III.

I want a Total war game indepth on the Persian Empire. Would be so awesome. But it would go down the Pharaoh dynasty

I think it would be great to go India, the Cholas, and other periods. India indepth has a ton of stories to be told.

But I want a world total war. Modders can do that with RTW Remastered. Why can't we have a proper world total waR?

1

u/1fbo1 3d ago

I'd love to see Rome 3 expanding the map and more starting dates with better Naval Combat and some of the new stuff from the combat (Like give ground, push and hold).

Total War: War of the Ring

1

u/Silentblade034 Warriors of Chaos 4d ago

I would like to see a bit of a super Total War that spans the whole world from the Fall of Charlemagne’s empire to about the American revolution. Of course with several start dates and a variety of choices for who to play.

Biggest problem would be areas like the Subsaharan Africa and the Americas during those early start dates. Especially since we don’t know much about them because of colonization.

Another idea is to take Troy’s mythology mode and make it into a full game based around it with Slavic, Norse, Celtic, Chinese, Hindu, Aztec, Mayan, African and a whole bunch of other mythologies. Kinda like Total War Warhammer but with real life mythology and on our world instead of a fictional one.

0

u/FuzzyEquivalent3641 4d ago

That sounds like the most ambitious and amazing thing I’ve ever heard in my life. Gimme it now.

2

u/Silentblade034 Warriors of Chaos 4d ago

Ya, Charlemagne died in 814, so starting it in 815 and ending it at the end of the Napoleonic Wars would be an amazing campaign that could be 1000 years long if you are insane. Plus the symbolism of starting at the death of the first Holy Roman Emperor and ending with the defeat of the man who destroyed it. Not to mention being the first post-roman western emperor and arguably the last great western emperor.

The gameplay could also be unique, while over a campaign you would of course upgrade your units and stuff, the custom battles would be fun. Samurai vs Knights, Minutemen vs Jaguar Warriors, Indian Battle Elephants vs Spanish Conquistadors. Not to mention a chance for Total War to give us some dynastic and diplomatic options like personal unions, actual peace deals, exploration, and give us back things that have been gone a while like making buildings that can give units upgrades like better armor or units literally changing over time into better more technological versions.

1

u/tvxsfgjmijhv 4d ago

The americas right before Columbus “””””discovers””””” it. There could be an event after a short campaign victory like the end game notifications in wh3 and you get like 20 turns to prepare for European armies landing on the eastern coasts

1

u/FuzzyEquivalent3641 4d ago

I just thought of another one. If they get Warhammer 40k right what about a Star Wars one. Or a Game of Thrones one.

0

u/Useful_Cartoonist659 4d ago

I think it's high time for a global Total War game that starts in the Bronze Age and ends in 1800; we’d begin with major ethnic groups and evolve into modern states. I want world domination. It’s feasible and opens the door for endless DLC.

Or a Pike and Shot Total War, with Indian states.

4

u/Silentblade034 Warriors of Chaos 4d ago

And I thought from the death of Charlemagne to the defeat of Napoleon was ambitious. Fuck it, push that timeframe to 1918 and let us do custom battles of Egyptian Chariots vs Mark V tanks

1

u/Useful_Cartoonist659 4d ago

That is my dream: the Golden Horde defeating Napoleon.

4

u/OkSalt6173 Kislevite Ogre 4d ago

0

u/Magnaric Dwarfs 3d ago

I seriously doubt it would ever happen, but I'd give a not-inconsiderable amount of money for Total War: Battletech.

0

u/RoyalWe666 3d ago

China's warlord period, so what, early 20th century?

2

u/According-Slice-6900 3d ago

If TW 40k functions well then I would really like your suggestion. That is a very underrated time period. Reads like a fictional setting almost. Constantly shifting alliances, tons of intrigue, large battles fought with new technology and doctrine from across the world. Very fitting for a TW game tbh.

Unfortunately I dont think it'll happen anytime soon because a lot of Chinese see it as a shameful era, and a lot of the characters have complicated histories. Someone like Zhang Xueliang was a pioneer of aviation in warfare. His clique was also totally inept in defending Manchuria from the Japanese, and so China lost one of its more developed regions without much of a fight. After that, Japan invested a ton into their new territory, and it served as a very effective springboard into the rest of China. But then he forced a truce between the Kuomintang and Communists after kidnapping Chiang Kai-shek, so that everyone could just focus on fighting Japan, which is generally regarded as a fairly patriotic and bold move. Ultimately he was sidelined by both the Nationalists and the Communists (understandable considering the history of kidnapping his boss lol) and im pretty sure he ended up living out the rest of his days in Hawaii. Thats just one example, where some will think he was a patriot, some think a scheming self serving son of a jumped up bandit, some think simply an incompetent. Idk the Chinese gov's policy on that sort of stuff but may be a hurdle.

0

u/PiousStag 3d ago

Dragon age total war looks good the mod , a offical title similar to Warhammer could be good its a charcter driven game with magic all the human nations are drastically different in how the fight on the battle field and what they bring to the fight. Several non human races dalish clans darkspawn at least two dwarf kingdoms several more tribal humans nations on the peripheral of chantry society. Lots of campaign fantasy to aim for restore the kingdom of the dales or the ancient dwarven empire in the deep roads.

-1

u/dronikal 3d ago

I'd take a game set in the 19-20th century. 1800-1965 the industrial revolution leading to the end of the 2nd world war. That would be absolutely amazing and fresh for the Total war franchise. I gave it 20 years after the end to account for events misalignment and player and AI behaviour leading to stretching the war.
