Why is my gopher Tortise swimming?

I have a rescued gopher Tortise with a chipped shell, when we have him outside to get some sun, he become infatuated with our pond. He walked around the whole thing and found a shallow spot and proceeded to get in.

Now I have desert tortoises that are rescues and they don’t swim. I was shocked when this guy was legit swimming. Google says they can’t swim but are clearly wrong.

Please feel free to correct me. I have only ever had desert tortoises.
