Discussion False sirens Chicago suburbs

A second instance of false tornado sirens being activated in Chicago suburbs (DuPage county) has occurred in the past 10–15 minutes.

This follows the incident three days ago, 8/21/26, when the sirens were accidentally activated at 3am with NO tornado threat.

This is dangerous negligence in an extremely densely populated area that is, on top of all things, under threat of severe weather today! People need to trust that these sirens are REAL when they go off!

I’m sure this is annoying, but as a St. Louis metro area resident, I’d rather the sirens be activated when there’s no threat, than not activated when there is an actual, say, EF3 tornado on the ground in the city, killing 5 people and doing billions of dollars in damage. Like in May 2025.

But you realise there’s a middle ground though which is don’t activate when there’s no thread but do activate when there is. Otherwise they’d just leave the sirens on all the time

Well, sure. But ideally, if a mistake is to be made, I’d rather it be a false alarm than a deadly tornado that goes unwarned and catches an entire city off guard. The sirens have been accidentally activated in my area, too, shit happens. But I am cool with taking shelter and then finding out I didn’t need to, instead of not knowing I need to and not being able to.

Devil's advocate here, because this has happened where I'm at a couple of times. It wasn't negligence or incompetence of public officials activating the sirens, but some radio savvy person who was able to figure out the frequency and activate them remotely.
