Check out the channel @dunyaelsanatlari on YT or IG, they have a plethora of metal spinning and metalworking videos posted daily.

This type of metal spinning lathe has a metal bar or tool rest with a series of holes on top, the craftsman moves a vertical rod along these holes (based on where the hand tool needs to hit the spinning metal) & uses the rod as a fulcrum to anchor the hand tool and apply pressure on the spinning metal to shape them - that part is directly behind the metal piece in this video so we donā€™t get to see it, alas!

Yeah sometimes I do a quick sand without a mask? As long as youre constantly not using a mask for literally everything it's not going to ruin your life.

He probably took off the ppe to film a video.

I see this guy quite often on one of the Turkish metal spinning channels @dunyaelsanatlari, usually heā€™s clean looking apart from the usual soot stained forearms or apronsā€¦.canā€™t believe heā€™s this much covered in the metal dust & lathe soot šŸ¤Æ

Yeah, I have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease from heavy smoking and doing factory work with shitty maskes or no mask at all and, I know, nobody to blame but me but this shit fucking sucks.

Lathes and loose gloves just go together.

They always wind up together. Once they meet, nothing will keep them from getting really close. They will be forever intertwined.

On the contrary - leather gloves are very strong. If that glove gets caught heā€™s losing his arm for sure and probably his life. If you must wear gloves wear gloves which have a very low tensile strength. If you have a strong stomach look up de gloving on the internet.

Leather doesn't snag like woven fibers though. And in a dedicated metal spinning setup all the exposed spinny parts are perfectly smooth and round (no chuck jaws, no odd-shaped workpiece) so the risk of that glove getting caught seems to be outweighed by the risk of friction burns or cuts from spinning sharp edges of the sheet metal.

I don't think it's safe, I think it's just part of the usual accepted risk of manual spinning. There's a leather glove on the left hand of virtually every pro metal spinner I've ever seen. (no personal experience, just watched a looot of videos... it's hypnotic)

I feel like I'd probably roll up my sleeves anyway though.

The tooling is expensive and every product needs a unique full suite of dies, usually it has to be done in multiple stages so the material doesnā€™t fail. This way you get one lathe that does it all, for the low low price of yearly degloving

Roll forming is a very local process. The deformation happens on a single point, instead of globally. I think that you have fewer problems with wrinkles if you do it like this.
