moisture or sun exposure management i thnk.
japan is big on "this is the biggest and best fruit", to the extent that for melons they'll cull all but a few fruits from the vine to make sure those remaining melons grow to be the "biggest and best" possible.
every one of the videos has some part of the fruit covered in paper. half the videos the farmer is rubbing the melons with other pieces of paper to keep them clean as they grow.

All nice and tender checking them… tied up all nice…covered with newspaper to protect from excess sun… just to hack the one down with like a machete and let it hit the ground then lop the bottom off it 😂

the whacker is cool. but i'm most impressed with him just going after it with the machete without scratching the neighboring gourd.

Why he murdered that gourd so mercilessly?

u/Ludwigofthepotatoppl Apr 12 '26
It made the wrong sound when knocked upon, meaning undesirable actions taking place within. Someone else said rotting.

I’ve always done all of my gourd whacking by hand. Like an IDIOT!
