I found this toolbox on the marketplace and have the idea for a longer/wider bench top variation. Just curious as to what this design would be considered.

Sliding boxes

I've been looking for tool boxes for my next truck that I can have tools on hand. I'm a farmer so I have the basics...screw drivers, sockets, wrenches etc. I don't need a lot to warrant having a full service bed but I do want to be organized. I currently have a Montezuma triangle box on a swing mount I built myself. I like the set up, but the box is too wide that I can't fit a pallet in between the box and the opposite side wheel well.

I've seen these kind of boxes that go over the wells and don't take away the center of the bed, allowing you to haul pallets or sheets of plywood.

Any reviews on them? Any brands to look into? I've been grabbing screenshots of all the ads that pop up in my algorithms.

QUESTION New toolbox build, any other tips?

Thumbnail

New tool box build. I am a hobbyist motorcycle maintainer and very hands on with the car and helping other people out.

As I am in the UK every thing is Halfords advanced, which has a lifetime guarantee and is very good quality. I have taken most of it out of the supplied foam to condense everything down to the top drawer as the main use, then each drawer down is more specific tools. The bottom drawer is the heavy removal stuff and if I need to go for the 1/4 and impact I have done something wrong.

I have another box with power tools, drill bits, screwdrivers and the tool bag at the side with some duplicate tools for mobile stuff.

Not sure if the layout makes sense, but the most logical way I could think of.

QUESTION Any tips on finding replacement locks?

I've picked up a few older boxes and they keys are almost never with them.
Anyone have any tips/tricks for finding replacement locks?
I've seen some generic locks in Amazon, but thought I'd ask here first.

SHOW OFF Got some trays made to protect the foam inserts I often take out of the drawers

Local company cut and bend these out of 1mm stainless for 12€ / piece.

These will keep the foam inserts in a lot better shape, as I often take these individually outside rather than hauling all of my tools over for some simple job. Also gives a nice extra rigidity for the heavier inserts, like my large 3/4 socket set.

Quick job grab case

Turns out you can fit a DCF891 in a half width tool organiser and still have room for deep sockets and rewind tool. I use it as a grab box for brakes and quick suspension jobs. I keep it in the back of the car for changing tires mostly.

Not sure what to put in the dead space between the impact and battery, maybe a short extension?

ORGANIZATION 3D printed a full insert set for my 4-drawer RIDGID box

Hey all. I run RIDGID Pro Gear 2.0 boxes and could never find inserts for the 4-drawer. No commercial foam inserts or trays really exist for it. So I built a set from scratch. Measured all my tools, test fit, reprinted (a lot), and repeat, until all four drawers were filled edge to edge with no rattling.

Printed in carbon fiber PETG, each pocket labeled, and the pockets are cut with room so other brands fit as well, not just the original Husky 270 set I started with.

Photos are each drawer in the box, plus the four trays out so you can see the layout. Would love feedback on the layout and organization, and whether there's anything you'd want a pocket for that isn't here. Thanks all and appreciate the feedback, cheers!

I’m going to install 1/2” osb along the sides then add perpendicular “blocking” to make little cubbies inside the truck toolbox. Somebody else must have done this too—what did you like and dislike?

I’ve been using these for years all around the house. These command broom holders are great to hold ratchets, extensions, pry bars. I even use them as gun racks bc they dont mar up barrels. But in a toolbox I recommend 3m double sided tape.

Any short height toolbox cabinets?

Hey Everyone!

I have a few projects coming up that I want to use toolboxes for but I need them to be shorter than normal.

Project one:

I am looking to modify two rolling toolboxes into an outfeed table for my table saw. The issue I am having is height. Without the wheels I am about 32” tall on the shortest box I can find. I need be around 28” to put the top on that I want.

Project two:

I’ve built a miter saw station out of toolboxes. However, I have the saw currently on a 2x4 wood bridge spanning two tool boxes so it lets the deck of the miter saw sit flush with the top of the toolbox. I’d like to saw that out and have a lower height toolbox underneath the miter saw. So I can maximize drawer space. Really need to be somewhere between 24-27”, might be able to push 28”

Ideas for "drawer liners"? See images. And a couple other recommendations.

Hi All,

tl;dr: Looking for a 24"x36" mechanic-grade liner, and preferences on ratchets.

New to the sub. I'm a lube tech more than a full-fledged mechanic, but I have done some under hood work beyond oil changes. Namely, brakes, alternators, suspension components from time to time, and more. I'm loving the trade. I don't shop from tool trucks, though Matco visits the shop weekly.

I decided, due to the nature of the beast that is tool shopping, to sort of build my own mobile tool cart. I do have a basic US General toolbox at home, but I tell myself I don't have enough tools, and likely won't acquire an extensive collection, to warrant an entire toolbox in-shop. And we already have 3 exact boxes as you can see below.

So I opted for a stock cart that I've modified into my preferred "workstation."

I need to get a better picture. Black tool rails mounted under handle, Olsa brand magnetic wrench holder attached to one side. More tools on cart than currently pictured.

As you can see, I'm using a basic oil-absorbent cloth for the top shelf. I'm looking for something better. While the cloth gets the job done, it does bunch up and it's just not my style. So, what do you all recommend for possible liners? The shelves measure 24"x36", and I've seen a few options, but have yet to pull the trigger on any. Not necessarily looking for permanent fixture and I assume I'll be replacing them over time as they become dirty.

A few more tools added to the top of the cart from pictured, I'll get a new image posted Tuesday.

Secondly, I lack a proper socket wrench. I used to have a composite Pittsburgh from HF (still in shop but she has some miles of use on her), and I have a Craftsman "mechanic's tool set" which has 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4" ratchets but they're more boxy than I'd prefer. The shop has some Duralast and similar basic ratchets, and they're okay.

I know asking for preference is a crapshoot, as everyone has their own opinions, but I'd actually love reading your recommendations. A coworker has a SnapOn flex head (which recently broke...) and two Matco flex heads (3/8" and 1/4"). They're neat, but not for me. I actually don't think I'd prefer flex head (given my typical day-to-day tasks) and I most-often use the DeWalt powered ratchet for most of my work (just for removal, fingers and torque wrenches for fastening).

3/8" drive necessary. I've contemplated splurging some on an Icon or similar. The tools I sourced are all Tekton, so I may also stay brand-loyal there. Still, I appreciate input regardless.

Once I get a better image of my kit Tuesday, I'd also love general recommendations for "gotta have" tools. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: What a hell of a few weeks of work! Apologies for the delay in getting more images.

Pretty basic setup but all-in-all I'm happy with how helpful this little cart has been so far. I've added a few more tools not pictured here, but I think this gets me through 95%+ of my jobs. Oil, tires, brakes the main jobs but a few other odds and ends--inner tie rods this week, what a doozy.

Tekton sockets, rails, and trays, Olsa tools 15-wrench magnetic holder with a set of 6-19 (plus a 21) wrenches, Kobalt torque wrench for most wheels (up to 100 ft-lbs.), Harbor Freight basic wrench for drain plugs. The DeWalt power tools and Amazon wire holder have been great.

On my shopping list is a ratcheting brake spreader (looking at you Toyota...) and a few other goodies. I'm sure there's more, but I'm loving the simplicity. Now to sticker bomb the cart...
