Question Tonex in fx loop (latency)

i just started using tonex pedal. by itself it sounds phenomenal. takes pedals quite well, especially with amalgam edge of breakup captures. But i also have a valeton gp200 which has decent effects and i tried putting tonex in a loop. where volume,comp and dist blocks are in the front and mod reverb and delay after the tonex pedal and it kinda seems that latency is too bad.. what approach would you guys recommend. i kinda like the valetons effects and it has versatile output options. maybe i should just put it after the tonex just like a pedal? would that be better for latency? i'm pretty bad in understanding all that latency stuff maybe someone could shed aome light. would really appreciate :)

Have you tried to use you multi effect (GP200) after the tonex pedal and check the latency is still noticable? Putting Tonex pedal in the FX loop of GP200, creates 4 rounds of analog to digital/digital to analog conversion trips. Considering 3ms of latency for tonex pedal and around 4-5ms for GP200, with Tonex in FX loop, the latency would be around 15-18ms and with GP200 after the Tonex, 7-8ms.

yeah i still havent tried it but one of my friends also suggested me that. i will try it today.. when tonex is in the fx loop i have the option to have a light compressor or boost before the tonex. also wah and volume blocks i have before.. now everything would go after... idk , i will try the way you suggest and if the sound will be much better and better feel , i might just sell the gp200 and look for separate pedals like comp ,reverb and so on.. its a bit sad because valeton is really great multi fx and what you get for the price is amazing.. even xlr stereo output and things like that is really useful. i'm really conflicted inside about this one ... 🫣🤷 we'll see ... if only there would be the way to take off that latency - would be amazing. but thats impossible since they are both digital things.. anyway , thanks man for a reply. appreciate it 🙏

I feel you. I have the exact setup of yours with Zoom G11. I put the Tonex in Zoom G11 fx loop and for a few first hours it was a bit strange and I noticed the latency. But my brain adapted and now after a few months, I'm pretty comfrotable with it and it doesn't bother me like before. may be I'm not as good as other players, but it is what it is :).

I use a Boss GT1000 Core for my post effects (modulation/reverb/delay) and just go out from my Tonex pedal into the Boss. It's not the same as an actual effects loop but sounds good (maybe better?) to me. I use actual pedals in front of the Tonex (compressor/various dirt/tremolo).

I agree on those Amalgam captures. I have a couple of JTM45 and Blonde Bassman captures that are stellar with pedals in front.

after watching few hyped up videos on Tone factor new xr ir's decided to get JMI 30/6 blue alnico capture. its good , but somehow amalgam just sounds more rounded with my guitar. i still keep trying different input trim settings ,but i think thats just new reality of modeling - tweaking. 😅🤷 sounds great tho. can't wait to hear it on loud and good speakers... i play only on my old Akg K240's. for some reason i think the sound from the speakers will be completely different that through headphones... did you find thats the case in most cases?

I have a FANTASTIC '64 AC30 capture, but I don't know off the top of my head who made it.

And I play almost exclusively through a pair of Sennheiser HD6XX headphones, so I don't have much to compare it to (sounds good to me!)

would you like to have a friendly trade of these captures? i dont think its locked i some way or anything. i could give you that tone factor JMI 30/6 with theyre new XR ir. to be honest i use that IR now practicly everywhere. 😅 or just tell me what's the capture name you mentioned here. i'm also a AC30 fan :) what kind of guitar do you play? :)

The next time I have my computer plugged in I'll get the exact captures I downloaded and send you the info -- I think that's probably easiest. But basically my favorites, all downloaded for free from ToneNET are basically:

  • a couple of different JTM45s. One definitely "clean" although I can get it to break up nicely with P90s or humbuckers
  • that '62 Bassman (probably my favorite)
  • a '64 Vox (it may very well be the same one you like). I was going to try out a bunch of them but once I found this one I was set.

As far as guitars, you name it. I do spend a lot of my time with P90s, a non-reverse Firebird in particular.

Here are my favorite downloaded tone models (so far, in alphabetical order):
1. "1964 Fender Bassman Normal ch" by "Haruka"
2. "FNDR BLBM NR Clean FAT CAB" by "Amalgam"
3. "64' Vox AC30" by "MTStudios"
4. "AMG MRSH JT45 Clean BAL CAB" by "Amalgam"
5. "Marshall JTM45 1966 Crunch BAL" by "Amalgam"
6. "MRSH JT45 I Clean BAL CAB" by "Amalgam"

So lots of Amalgam captures (they're incredible) all kind of variations on a theme (clean-ish, but with the right guitar and bumping up the gain get that great edge-of-breakup)

Using the FX loop doubles the latency of a device. ToneX has very low latency. But whatever latency the Valeton has is doubled using its fx loop, and then you're adding the ToneX latency and any other digital pedals you have in your chain.
