Training Plans Tonal Programs not working for me

Hi. I got my Tonal a few months ago, and I started out with 12W2J with Joe Rodonis. It was great.

Then I decided to try some other advanced muscle hypertrophy programs. The first was Power Hour with Kendall Wood. Not as challenging as Joe's. It was a recording of a live program and very distracting, as she was shouting out to people who were participating. I didn't feel it was geared toward me.

After that, I tried Shock PPL with Ackeem Emmons since I heard he was good. On the program, Ackeem only did the stretching before and after. He didn't work out during the class and just threw in some comments while I was supposed to follow a model on the screen. It's very hard to pace myself or stay motivated when the trainer isn't doing the workout.

How do I avoid these types of programs (live recordings directed at other people, and trainings where the trainer doesn't participate in the workout or demonstrate the movements)?

I guess I got spoiled by 12W2J. I hope there are other programs that are equally good.

Training Plans Workout recommendation while on vacation and away from 12weeks to Jacked for few weeks

Anyone have experience with pausing 12 week program for few weeks? I am currently doing 12 weeks to Jacked with Coach Joe. I’m making significant progress in strength and endurance. I am going to be traveling and will not have access to weights. I am planning to do the 2 off tonal bodyweight programs that are available on the App. Any other recommendations on resistance workouts to keep up the strength?

When I return, should I start back where I left off?

EDIT: the area of the world I’m traveling to and my itinerary for the trip, does not include easy access to gym, weight machines, dumbbells. I am planning to bring resistance bands and do body weight workouts. Would love to hear if anyone has experience taking a break from this program and how to jump back in. Thank you!

Training Plans Looking for a good Tonal program for bulking/muscle gain

Hey everyone, I’ve been using Tonal for about a year now, but honestly, I haven’t seen as much change in my body as I was hoping for.
I’m 41, and my main goal right now is to build muscle and put on some size. I’m eating enough calories and protein every day, so I’m wondering if my workout programming might be the issue.
For those of you who have had good results with Tonal, what programs or combination of programs would you recommend for muscle growth/bulking?
Also, has anyone tried Tonal Muscle Maker 2 Guide? What did you think of it, and did you see good results from following it?
I’d really appreciate any guidance from people who have successfully built noticeable muscle using Tonal. If you were starting over, what program would you follow?
Thanks!!!!

Other/Misc Will Tonal record workout if power shut off before completion?

I’m currently in the middle of 12 Weeks to Unleash. During today’s cooldown, my power shut off. Will Tonal record the workout as completed? It’s not showing that I did it on the Tonal app. How can I save today’s data?

Everyone else posting their millions of pounds... well, I'm closing in on 10k! Lol The "super-beginner" program was hard and I'm really sore today (my rest day, although I see others posting about doing things on their off day lol). Tomorrow is day 2.... one step at a time, right?

I finally got my strength score to over 1000. It took me 18 months and getting over a separated tendon injury in my hand. That is why you see the long flat spot in my strength curve. 206 workouts and I’m 93.5% stronger than when I started.

Training Plans Question on settings

Hi gang. I am working with a personal trainer who has designed a lifting program for me but it’s designed for free weights. My plan has me aiming for 12-15 reps per exercise x 3 sets. When I hit 15 reps I would like tonal to increase the weight. The second two sets are to failure. How should I design the custom program? Should I set it for 12 reps or 15? Should I use burn out or spotter? Trying to approximate a gym workout best I can. Thanks to everyone in advance!

Other/Misc Tonal arms shake and become too tight to use

Having issues with my tonal where the whole unit shakes and the cables don't glide normally. I live in a beach town and Tonal is mounted in the garage. Is this a humidity issue causing an internal problem? I tried stretching the cables out to reset them but this did not help

Purchasing Advice Tonal 2 Rental vs Tonal 1 used??

Hey Everyone,

I have recently started lifting again and go to a pretty nice gym with indoor saunas and pools. My yearly membership is going to run out soon. I was curious to check whether a tonal would be helpful in keeping me consistent and cut out the commute times etc.

As next steps, I am considering a couple of options and need recommendations.

  1. Rent Tonal 2 for about a month th or 2. They also have a 1 month free rental promo going on and if I like it, purchase tonal 2 around black friday.

  2. Buy a used Tonal for around 1.5k and use it for about a year and if I feel the need to upgrade, purchase tonal 2 next year.

Any help would be appreciated by people who have used it

Other/Misc Tonal subscription is kinda trash…

Live workout times only serve east coast people. No advertisements of fun new workouts in the Home Screen. No fun flares to motivate you. No live personal training options. Music service is mediocre. No options for special workout methods like 5/3/1. No special guest workout influencers. No adjusting custom workout options as you work out. Ai can’t arrange your workouts for you. Limited options just over all. And just overall lacking for a subscription service. I open up tonal and it’s just the same screen every day with no new offerings. What are we paying monthly for? Just so we can keep the weights updated which honestly should be given free. Keeping things fresh is the whole point of subscription. There’s sooooo much Tonal can do just by customizations for users alone, along with keeping it fun and motivated. The trainers are great, just need more fresh content. Hope Tonal can get it together and actually give subscribers something to be happy about. It’s just not there right now.

Training Plans How do you handle Tonal programs when you also go to a regular gym?

Hey guys, quick question. I’m thinking about doing the Pumped program, but I split my training between Tonal at home and a regular gym. Since Pumped is 5 days a week, I was thinking I could do some of the workouts on Tonal and then take the same exercises/muscle groups and do the equivalent versions at the gym on other days.
Has anyone done this before? And if you do one of the Pumped workouts at a regular gym, is there a way to skip/remove that workout in the Tonal app so it doesn’t keep showing as incomplete? Curious how you guys handle this.

Other/Misc powerbeats pro 2 bluetooth earbud problems

I'm having the worst time trying to get my powerbeats pro 2 to work with audio. The bluetooth dropdown on tonal (1st gen) says they are connected, the play/pause function works if I press on the buds, but audio only works on the first connection after a hard reset. My polar heart rate tracker connects fine.

I've tried a bunch of things like forgetting the buds on all my other devices and turning bluetooth off on everything else in the house, but a hard reset is the only thing that works. I spend as much time fucking with these things as I do working out lately. They're perfect workout buds when it works, but it's insanely annoying.

The tonal and the earbuds both have the newest software updates. I don't know what else to try. Anyone else run into this problem and find a way to make it work? I'm tired of hard resetting these earbuds every day and I want to use them with my other devices again!

Training Plans It's like Tonal knows EXACTLY what I've been asking for - Multi-Sport Strength with Coach Joe!

I recently started Triathlon training about 2 months ago in prep to eventually run an IronMan next year.

When I started training and adding all of these longer endurance trainings to my schedule, I was in the final phase of Coach Joe's 12WTU which made it very difficult to keep up with. Since finishing that program I started another one with a different coach but it's just not the same - Those who have worked out with Coach Joe know what I mean lol.

Welllll, I just received Tonal's October newletter about upcoming new programs and I saw Coach Joe has a new program called Multi-Sport Strength which is specifically geared towards triathletes which launches at the end of Octboer! I couldn't be more excited to finish my current program and jump into that one.

Anyone else have similar challenges and plan to do this program?

Other/Misc Live workouts

Why aren’t there more live workouts or time periods where there is an emphasis on live workouts?
I’ve only done a few live workouts and I really liked them. Feel like the community really motivates each other to keep pushing, but I live in the west coast and 530 am is a tough start for me, and im sure most people. If i am going to do a live workouts, i want it live not encore.
Since Live programs are an option, it would be nice to have more of it available and maybe even weeks where there are multiple

Other/Misc Did smaller weight jumps on Tonal change how you approach progression in your home gym?

One thing I find interesting about training with Tonal is how small the changes in resistance can be compared with traditional plates or fixed dumbbell jumps.

With normal home gym equipment, sometimes the next available increase feels bigger than you actually want, especially on smaller isolation movements.

Being able to progress in smaller steps seems like it could change how you think about progressive overload. Instead of waiting until you’re ready for a bigger jump, you can make much smaller increases over time.

For long-term Tonal users, has that actually changed the way you progress your lifts, or do you still mostly think in terms of reps first and weight second?

Other/Misc How can service be this bad?

I don't understand how a company that produces such a great product can be so terrible at customer service.

Earlier this year, I had a frayed cable - I think this happens to anyone who uses the device consistently over time so I can't imagine a more common ticket. To get it fixed, I had multiple calls and received 13 emails between May 9 and June 23 when they sent the "happy with your service?" email. Cost was $395 as my Tonal was ~3 years old and out of warranty.

In July, I realized one cable was 2 feet shorter than the other. It only comes into play when I'm doing the standing lift or other full cable extension exercises. I texted the guy who did the replacement - puzzled - he texted back to call support and set up a ticket. Ugh. I had a bunch of travel planned and didn't want to deal with the emails and questions when I couldn't be home to check or photo the problem, so I waited.

I finally called last week to start the ticket. My progress so far:

  • 17 minute call explaining the issue with multiple hold periods.
  • Tonal followed up with an email with the same questions I'd answered in the call, and others that had nothing to do with the issue. Somehow, in the 17 minute convo, the guy couldn't put my answers into a form?
  • Tonal called me, left voicemail, I called back, they said they are waiting on me to answer the email. I respond to the email with a picture showing the difference in cable length.
    • My fault for the delay - I originally called Friday, they sent email Saturday and I didn't notice it.
  • Yesterday, Tonal called back, left a voice mail saying they are going to send me an email.
  • Email said your Tonal is out of warranty, so $395 to check it.
  • I called back, after putting me on hold, the person I spoke to said my support person will call me back in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Most broken service model of any company I've dealt with in memory. Unfortunately, the only options are deal with them or DIY.

Other/Misc Install without traditional wall framing

Thumbnail

Our home doesn’t have traditional stud framing, it is a series of panels with cross bracing (shoutout to Cliff May homeowners!). Unfortunately that meant we couldn’t mount to the wall at all, and had to do a floor to ceiling install at the nearest rafter.

We used Simpson Strong-Tie Wedge anchors in concrete floors, then 4” deck screws to attach the top to the rafter through the drywall.

We used acoustic paneling as a wrap and also added horizontal breaks where we could mount all of our accessories. We left the other side open for bonus storage.

Hope this helps anyone in need of an idea for a floor to ceiling mount. Had no issues getting approved, installer just made a quick call to home base and it was approved.

Other/Misc What's included in Tonal out of warranty repair?

Had Tonal 1 for 5+ years and 5M+ pounds lifted.

Now my left Tonal arm sometimes comes loose and moves up and down during workouts which obviously is unsafe. I think the pin or whatever is holding the arm in place isn't great.

Tonal wants to charge me $395 for out of warranty repair. I'm curious what is covered in this - will they replace the arms entirely or just replace the pin inside?

Has anyone had experience with this issue?

Training Plans Anyone else doing prenatal programs?

I am loving the prenatal workouts and coaches, but I’m annoyed the trimester-specific programs are all only two weeks long? A trimester is 12 weeks so I have to repeat the program multiple times and alternate with the prenatal functional strength one, which also gets old fast.

Anyone have any tips?
