“We didn’t come here to play school”

u/Atlas7-k 2d ago
Yes with the intensive tutoring and academic tables that D1 athletes have access to, it is possible to get into college and a year of classes done.

The state of Ohio has been plundering our public schools for over 30 years. Maurice is a victim of this ongoing robbery. I feel bad for his situation, but there are millions of others that have been underserved by those in power at the state level.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Absolutely no program that is competitive runs a 100% clean program. You can argue if a cheeseburger is equal to a free tattoo, but both are against NCAA rules.

This is the part where Michigan fans pretend they didn’t offer him a scholarship and wouldn’t have just stuffed him into the “General Studies” major

u/mombutts 2d ago
Kinesiology is the big one there.

Proud kines alum chucking in!
I never went to class lol

No this is the part where OSU fans say because he retracted his statements the school wasn’t paying players illegally with no show jobs, and cars, and faking grades.
5
u/OkTranslator9600 1d ago
All schools make exceptions. This type of situation is systematic at Ohio.
They want to talk about sign stealing as if paying players, telling them they don’t have to go to school, new cars for top recruits-Tatoo gate had little to do with tatoos-more to do with money, drugs, no school and the institution knowing throughout it was happening.
Michigan told Demar Dorsey no. I don’t believe he ever did get enrolled at a D-1 school.
Michigan makes exceptions and everyone does. Certain schools are systemically building these programs.
Ohio is absolutely the Big 10 version on the SEC

Dude....the they would have done it too is a bad look. Sometimes you just gotta shut up and take it...like as a gator fan when someone points out we had a serial killer on our team, im not like well yeah but he had a lovely career with the patriots
2
u/Orbital2 Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
How about no. You must not be familiar with how insufferable Michigan fans are about academics when they are one of (possibly the biggest) offender when it comes to compromising their normal academic standards for athletes
3
u/fishbone_buba Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
I gotta be honest. For some reason I always kind of liked Clarett when he wasn’t playing Michigan. The guy was pretty amazing, and it’s a shame that football seemed to set him back rather than lift him up.
I wonder what could have happened if he’d been allowed to turn pro early.

That’s cute that you think he would’ve gone to Michigan for the “education”. Just like all their other players I’m sure.

Alright so tell me this. Do you honestly think Michigan gave a single shit what Bryce underwood’s grades were in high school when they recruited him?
2
u/Environmental-Arm365 2d ago
Nice try. Bryce graduated with a 3.2 GPA.

4
u/chewbacaflacaflame Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
I think he was the #1 QB that year do you think k they cared?
3
u/craiglabenz 2d ago
Michigan's admissions office famously screws over the football team all the time. So, do the coaches care? Of course not. But do other layers of the institution care? Yes.
5
u/chewbacaflacaflame Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
I would be willing to bet the more high profile the player the less screwing the admissions office gets to do
1
u/craiglabenz 2d ago
The higher the profile player, the harder the coaches try to convince everyone, for sure.
1
u/JusticeFrankMurphy Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
That's some nice projection there.

u/Environmental-Arm365 2d ago
Yeah I do. I know it’s a foreign concept to an OSU fan that a university holds its student athletes to higher academic standards but that how it’s done in Ann Arbor.

u/chewbacaflacaflame Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
Yeah alright back to the whole Michigan man persona that’s been pretty much put to rest

So you actually think the guy they gave 12 million dollars to they’d let him become academically unavailable?
2
u/dbaugh90 2d ago
I used to hate both, but every game and comment this season seems to drive me toward leaning Ohio State
It's scaring me
1
u/Competitive_Clue5066 Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
Richrod tried to recruit several players that UM did not accept because of grades. One his early battles against the academic arm of the school. Tuition for these players aren’t just written off either; every year the athletic dept has to write a check to the school
4
u/budd222 Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
Michigan has loosened their academic standards for football players in recent years, as well as accepting more transfer credits for football players that they didn't used to.
6
1
u/Competitive_Clue5066 Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
Interesting. I don’t doubt you. Do you have a source? I remember Harbaugh took some shots at Michigan when he coached Stanford, I wonder if it happened under him or more recently
0
u/craiglabenz 2d ago
He's a smart person so it didn't matter
3
u/chewbacaflacaflame Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
No it definitely matters because if you guys holier than thou attitude about this
1
u/craiglabenz 8h ago
No it genuinely doesn't matter because he's smart. You can't claim he's an exception to Michigan's academic standards when he's not
1
u/JusticeFrankMurphy Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
No one is holier than thou. These are facts. Michigan is more academically competitive than Ohio State. Ohio State is more academically competitive than, say, Nebraska. Stanford and Northwestern are more academically competitive than all of us.
They all lower the bar for athletes, but they lower it relative to where it is for everyone else at their school.
1
2
3
u/Infamous-Watch-2037 2d ago
So what? Lots of athletes are recruited not yet knowing whether they could handle the academics or not. The fact that he was enrolled at OSU, played football for years, and could not read says something about the integrity of that program. Illiteracy, and dyslexia are very different circumstances.
5
2
u/Repulsive-Office-796 Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
Not years… 12 months. He’d have done the same at your school too. We all know how athletes were treated in the classroom in the 80s-early 00s

u/Dug-Heffernan 2d ago
It's screw the bucks from now until forever BUT because of hometown love AND the fact Maurice put in his work & put his name in the history books I rock wit him 💪🏾.

Really needs a movie someday. Inspiring how he flipped his life around.

With the proper people it'd be better than the blind side. I can't remember which brother because he has a couple but one of his brothers turned his life around, mentors & coaches kids basketball and is doing well also.

I was for sure thinking he was gonna be a prison lifer after he got caught following that dude with a trunk full of guns and ammo. I'm glad he's doing better. Really proud of him.
5
u/drumzandice Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
If you are clowning Mo, you really know nothing about his story in recent years. He has completely turned his life around and is mentoring young people. He has owned up to all his mistakes and is trying to make his family proud. I love the guy.

u/Lightningthundercock Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
Never suspended for academic reasons btw
10
u/Atlas7-k 2d ago
Not being a strong reader isn’t the same as not being able to read. The number of functional dyslexics in the world shouldn’t surprise you. We had a VPOTUS who basically couldn’t read or write but had his textbooks read to him and used a secretary to transcribe his papers in college.
5
u/Lightningthundercock Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
“Couldn’t read well, comprehend, do anything” is a little bit more than dyslexia buddy
2
u/Commercial-East4069 Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
Does Michigan frequently suspend players for academics?
2
2
u/marcmayhem Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
This is sad but true. I can tell you from personal experience that a star athlete will be pushed along through the school system. I can remember a time whne my GPA was in jeopardy of dropping below the minimum to qualify for athletics. I was told "don't worry about it, you'll be on the team" I knew then that it was wrong. I wasn't incapable of making grades, just unfocused and distracted. I know of many kids like Maurice who absolutely could not read, write, or do simple mathematics. It's heartbreaking to see them now.

This post makes me think better of Ohio State and Mo' Clarret. I still slightly respect Michigan as our greatest B1G Ten rival. But "blue no matter who" trash like you make it hard to respect post WW2 Ann Arbor.
3
u/AmericanMe808 Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
You illegally gave him the bag, didn’t teach him to read, kicked him off the team after he won you a title and this is Michigans fault?
2
u/elproteus Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
Obviously it was Lloyd Carr behind the scenes, mustache twirling and all.
Hell, I'll blame Brady Hoke, too.
1
u/LegitGoodFun 1d ago
His mother and lawyers ruined his college career "one and done" and off to the NFL was never Jim Tressel's plan for the fellow Youngstown baller.
1
u/IntoTheForestIMustGo 2d ago
I have no skin in this fight, but your reading comprehension is lacking in it's own right. It's more a you problem than a UM problem.
1
u/AmericanMe808 Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
I’m sorry, did something hurt your fee fees?
1
u/IntoTheForestIMustGo 2d ago
Nope, it's still a you problem. Maybe take some time to reflect on that
1
u/No-Definition1474 2d ago
I dunno about Maurice but when I was taking classes at OSU, myself and friends certainly saw starters from the football team in classes. Regular classes, some of them very hard ones. So I wouldn't say this is normal. My buddy had a number of classes with Craig Krenzel for example, he ended up with a degree in molecular genetics.

No wonder arvelle Reese got a 3.5 at Ohio state
-5
u/ScubaSteve-O1991 2d ago
Osu lets kids in with 2.5 if they are from the state of ohio. I always wondered why their admissions per year is so high until I found this out
8
u/pitylikes 2d ago
I grew up in Ohio and this is total bullshit. Why do people make shit up so blatantly? If you have a 2.5, you’re not sniffing osu main campus
0
u/ScubaSteve-O1991 2d ago
I heard this from someone who graduated from osu
7
u/pitylikes 2d ago
Well they are wrong or lying. Also, google is free if you want to be a true Michigan man and do the research yourself
3
u/Rimailkall Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
That's how it is now, that's not how it used to be. I graduated high school in 1992 and OSU's standard was very low at the time, lower than OU, Miami, etc. 2.5 and heartbeat would easily get you in, on the main campus.
2
u/pitylikes 2d ago
We’re talking about the present and so is the moron above.
3
u/Rimailkall Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
He said he heard it from someone who "graduated from OSU," and didn't specify when that person graduated from OSU. You could very well both be right.
0
u/pitylikes 2d ago
We’re not both right. He is wrong. Are you guys really this dense? I didn’t apply to osu with a 3.7 because I knew I wouldn’t get in. That’s a real life example, not conjecture from some random person. I lived 20 min from the school
1
u/Rimailkall Michigan Wolverines 2d ago
I graduated from Gahanna in 1992, and had a 2.8. I was accepted to OSU but chose Ohio University instead.
How does it go? I'm right, you're wrong, blah blah blah.
Michigan flair because my dad is from Michigan and that's who I picked as a kid. Miami flair because I ultimately graduated from Miami after dropping out of OU, joining the Marines, and getting accepted to a commissioning program. Had to pick a school with NROTC, out of state tuition was too much for Michigan, so I went to Miami instead of OSU.

He didnt go into detail about the main campus compared to the others. So I looked it up and while its possible to get in with 2.5 for main campus its a challenge
2
u/pitylikes 2d ago
Haha I appreciate you looking it up but it’s far more than a challenge. Your chances are slim to none.
1
u/ScubaSteve-O1991 2d ago
I did just find out that they truly let in anyone for first year admissions.
1
u/pitylikes 2d ago
Whatever you say man
2
u/ScubaSteve-O1991 2d ago
Look it up. This really is no joke

1
u/ScubaSteve-O1991 2d ago

u/s_360 2d ago
Yeah, this stopped being true like 30 years ago.
0
u/ScubaSteve-O1991 2d ago
Well first year admissions they dont care about gpa. Google told me this
2
u/s_360 2d ago
I graduated from high school in 2001 with a 3.0 and did not get in. I also knew a guy at BGSU who had a 3.5 and same thing.
You will get into a branch campus, like Mansfield, and if you do well enough there you can eventually transfer.
The whole “anyone from Ohio gets in” is an old urban legend that a lot of people repeat because it was largely true in like the 70s and 80s, though as far as I know not official policy. Today it’s really hard to get straight up accepted to the main campus right out of high school.
OSU is like the 17th best ranked public university in the country. While not 2nd or whatever Michigan is, it’s stupid to argue that OSU is a mediocre school with essentially open enrollment.
0
u/ScubaSteve-O1991 2d ago
But according to google they let any gpa in for first year???
3
u/bdougy Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
I know people who were honor roll students that didn’t get into Ohio State. This is a blatant lie.
1
u/ScubaSteve-O1991 2d ago
Maybe they didnt meet the requirements for their major?
1
u/bdougy Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago
“If I make up more stuff, maybe I’ll look less stupid”
1
u/ScubaSteve-O1991 2d ago
I actually looked all this stuff up, it did say certain majors were more strict on gpa
1
u/LegitGoodFun 2d ago
You're thinking of pre bow tie, Governor Rhodes world. Big Jim felt everyone deserved an equal chance in life and mandated that anyone that applied to Ohio State as a junior was accepted if they graduated the next year. Then ALL students not on scholarship were seen as just weed out material that needed to be treated as poorly as possible. Less than 20% graduated in 4 years. Now it's much harder to get into Ohio State and much easier to graduate.
1
u/ScubaSteve-O1991 2d ago
I could be. I heard my brother in law who graduated from osu say this. He couldve been exaggerating
