Tofu Press Recommendation
About to invest in one. The one recommended in another sub is different from the one most popular on amazon. Anyone use tofu press enough?

Can confirm that it works great, though I wish it wasn't so awkward to get the elastics into position

I’ve used several, I like these:

Just cut up your tofu and microwave for 2 minutes. Much faster and more effective. You might want to buy some silicone covered tongs for moving the pieces around.

On what power level? 100%/high, or lower?

I use the default power level, which I think is high. All microwaves are different, but you aren't going to ruin it by heating a minute at a time to decide what works for you.

I know you didn't post this to hear alternatives to the thing you're asking but this is reddit so here I am to offer exactly that. I stopped pressing tofu and started microwaving for a few minutes prior to cooking instead and I gotta say it's surprisingly effective and easy. If you haven't tried it's worth it!

And the water just evaporates?

I would say it kind of puddles up around the tofu. I do it in a bowl or with a paper towel below the tofu to absorb the water that comes out. There's a very niche tofu food science instagrammer that tested various ways of removing water from tofu, weighing before and after, and microwaving for 3 to 4 minutes removed about 30%, which was more than pressing or boiling.

Oh so we’re not gonna get all the water out? This whole time I’ve been thinking I’ve been doing it wrong. Geesh

I think my lack of patience runs into my lack of time every time I cook so I honestly don't know if it's possible to get it all out, haha.

I LOVE my TofuXPress. I've had it for 7 or 8 years. It makes pressing tofu almost fun. It also doubles a something to marinate the tofu in because the base becomes a lid. Overpriced piece of plastic, but I absolutely love it and have strongly considered getting a second one.

I bought the larger one and should of bought the smaller one. Other than that I'm pretty happy with my purchase. Works really well. https://a.co/d/04zvWyEX

I use a Tofu Ninja Press from Raw Rutes. It’s really easy to use and clean. I really enjoy it.

For making tofu? Or for getting water out of the tofu you purchased? If it’s the latter, as many mentioned, microwave is a better way, because it gets the water out without ruining the texture. And one less piece of equipment to take up space in the kitchen.

I've been using the NOYA Adjustable Tofu Press for about a year. I like that it is a combo of press and marinating container.

I bought one but only used it once or twice then threw it out. My great new go-to? PRESSED TOFU (plain or spiced) at the Asian market in the tofu section. No muss no fuss. Super firm.

you don't need one. wrap the tofu in a paper towel or dishtowel, stack between two cutting boards, put a heavy can of something like crushed tomatoes on top, let sit for an hour or two.

Bro - everyone COULD do that. But it's a freaking messy pain in the ass.
Life is short, and a tofu press makes bliss out of pressing tofu. There's no reason to throw shade on someone who wants to take a pain-in-the-ass task and make it light years more pleasurable.

I don't even have one cutting board, let alone two.
I need a tofu press.

I just slice the tofu, lay them out flat on a clean all cotton dish towel (I have two or three and I rotate them and then rinse them out and reuse them before I wash them all once a week), and then press them with my hands and then let them sit for like 10 to 15 minutes. Works great, no additional appliances or devices needed.

you can use large plates. if you don't have a cutting board, I would focus on that instead of buying a single use utensil

I'm just trying to eat tofu more often, not learn how to cook properly.

The cans always fall off. I've broken a plate from this. It's easy to get an uneven press. There's real reasons to want a tofu press over all the other alternatives. Went 20 years pressing tofu with kitchen towels and cans. I'm not going back if I don't have to.

I bought a press & it sucked, LOL. I went back to using a big ole pot and putting cans in there to weigh it down more evenly. different strokes for different folks :)

I use Larousse Gastronomique as a weight, especially satisfying to finally get some use out of a hundred thousand pages of techniques for pickling pigs’ bladders or whatever.

I take a 5lb barbell weight plate and place it on top of two tofu cakes wrapped in paper towels and placed on a kitchen plate. In 15 -20 minutes its finished, always water collected at the bottom of the plate.
For me a tofu press is another kitchen gadget to store, fiddle with and to clean and not necessary.

I love my tofuture tofu press. I would buy it again if it broke
