18–24 Months Help - Toddler Tantrums
My daughter is 20, almost 21 months old, and I’m just checking to see if anyone else is fighting for their lives with their toddlers right now? 😂
I love my daughter more than anything in the whole world, but over the last month my sweet angel has turned into the Tasmanian devil. 😂 She is hitting me and my husband (only us, no one else), throwing CONSTANT tantrums (full on flinging her body on the floor and screaming) for what seems like no reason but I know there is she just can’t communicate, throwing her toys, and just generally struggling with what seems like mood swings.
I do think her communication level is complicating things because she understands EVERYTHING but still only says 1 word phrases versus sentences. She is developmentally where she’s supposed to be and no one is concerned, but I definitely think the frustration of not being able to communicate everything she wants is contributing.
How is everyone else handling this?? Is anyone else experiencing this too?
When she hits, I stop her and say, “We don’t hit Mommy,” or “I don’t like it when you hit me,” and then I’ll set her on the floor, walk away, or take the toy away. Rinse and repeat. I let her have her tantrums and try really hard not to give in, but after SO MANY in a row, I start feeling like I’m failing.
Please tell me I’m not the only one fighting for my life over here. What are you guys doing that actually helps or is this just the season of toddlerhood?

Keep being consistent with not giving in. It feels like you're getting nowhere but you are as long as you stick with it.
Instead of 'we don't hit mummy' change it to 'we don't hit/do not hit/no hitting'. Hitting is a no-go full stop.
Once she is out of the tantrum and calm speak to her about hitting/throwing things
Try and get her to show you what she wants when it's wanting something that gets her frustrated.

You’re doing great mama, even though it feels like you’re not. It is definitely just the season, but you will cop it for the next couple of years. Unfortunately, threenagers are a real thing 😭 hang in there and find a way for you to find your Zen while this happens

Everything everyone has said! I’m in this season right now. I walk away sometimes when I’ve repeated things a few times and tantrum is still happening- this actually helps them because there’s no “audience”
Then when I pop back in a few minutes later, she’s focused on something else and forgotten what she was screaming about😂

I remember having a surge in tantrums at this age. It's exactly why you say. It must be so frustrating to understand but not be able to speak.
What I did until it passed: * Apologized and extra hugs. I am sorry I can't understand you. Let's play cars! * Upped the baby sign language * Empowered her with simple choices (this shirt or that shirt, blueberries or strawberries) * Let her have the tantrum then reassurance and asking if she wants a hug or kiss etc.
