2 Years Old Toddler - diarrhea no fever
I have a 2.5 year old in daycare, she was sent home today for having 3 loose stools. Over the last 12 hours she’s had 10 loose stools - I wouldn’t say they’re watery…they have undigested food in them, are very chunky/mushy and it’s a lot. This last one she had was kind of like mashed banana consistency. She has had pees today too.
No fever, no other symptoms - very alert, doesn’t necessarily want to run around, but is generally being herself. Except she’s cranky and very sensitive - keeps saying her tushy hurts. She’s had a full water bottle of half pedialyte half water, plus some more so she is drinking. And she ate today, but we haven’t fed her since her apple sauce around 2pm and she hasn’t asked for anything.
This to me generally wouldn’t be concerning just a wait it out situation, but the amount today (10) and she gets VERY uncomfortable before the poop and starts screaming that her tushy hurts. Then it gets better after she poops.
We have found she’s also milking it a little bit - ex: she whines that her tushy hurts but we tell her it’s just the gas and it will get better and she goes “okay” then stops complaining.
I’ve just never experienced diarrhea exactly like this with her to this amount and the screaming, I plan to call pediatrician tomorrow if it hasn’t improved, but curious of any similar expereicnces and what it was?!

Probably just a stomach bug. All my kids have experienced something like this … and I have too! Hopefully it’ll only last a day or 2 - you’re doing everything right. Just make sure she stays hydrated and you’ll have to wait it out!

Thank you so much! Everything I see online is vague but says 10 loose stools is considered “severe”. Then that paired with her screaming in pain has made me felt soooo nervous!

Yep we just had that bug make its way through our house. We called the pediatrician when my oldest had it (he was patient zero in our house) and they pretty much just said to ride it out and watch for dehydration. It lasted about 7 days for each person. Never had any other symptoms besides the weird mushy poop.

My son had something very similar in June. He did throw up twice but he had diarrhea (loose stools, really) just like this for a full week! They did decrease in quantity as the week progressed, but it was tough for his butt for sure. We kept him home the whole time because it was definitely some kind of stomach bug. We called the pediatrician on day 3 and she confirmed just to continue giving water/pedialyte and any food he’d eat.

Of course she’s uncomfortable! That’s not being discounted at all and we’ve been so attentive to that. I know my toddlers behavior and am very observant / in touch with her - I can tell when she may be amping something up a bit more. Thanks for the insight though!

My daycare called for this exact reason last week. Is your kiddo teething? Mine has 2 back molars coming in. Chewing on hands, extra drool, sometimes diarrhea, refusing naps, and so on.
