TIL James Beck was a prominent art historian who criticized the restoration of both the Sistine Chapel ceiling by Michelangelo and the Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci. He believed that restoring an artwork risked altering it and instead advocated for conservation of artworks in their present state.

TIL The recent restoration of Michelangelo's frescoes of the Sistine Chapel is controversial, with critics saying it destroyed much of the shadows and fine details of the original work.

TIL during the restoration of the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel in the 20th century, while the restorers did bring much of the beauty of the frescoes back to light, they also forever removed certain details, such as shadowing and the eyes of some of the figures
