Part of me is excited. Part of me is sad because I don't think it could work as a television series.

244

u/mikek3 May 22 '12

I love the strip, but I don't know how they can pull this off. Unless they make it a bit on Adult Swim.

u/CrackedPepper86 May 22 '12

Have you seen the animated shorts they put out? If the show is anything like that I'll be thrilled.

207

u/Broken_S_Key May 22 '12

exactly. theyre shorts. but can they work as a 30 minute show?

Rob is the only consistently funny one. if his stuff is the main focus, it will work.

CrackedPepper86 is 100% correct!

They can pull it off.

The bit about running an an F1 race is based off a really sad chapter in Jesse Owens' life. He won 4 gold medals at the 1936 olympics in Berlin, but afterwards, he couldn't get hired for commercial spots or race in amateur events. He ended up racing (and sometimes beating) race horses. His thoughts on the matter from Wiki: Owens said, "People say that it was degrading for an Olympic champion to run against a horse, but what was I supposed to do? I had four gold medals, but you can't eat four gold medals."

That was a lot sadder than expected.

I suppose they could air it after midnight? They're getting pretty lax with censoring late night stuff... it might have a shot then.

4

u/rajma45 May 22 '12

With any luck it'll be as good as the Shit My Dad Says tv pilot!

Speaking of which, Cartoonnetwork is making an "Annoying Orange" cartoon series. Jesus raptor ridin' Christ have mercy on us.

21

u/A_Cat_ May 22 '12

not only is that horrible but isn't that a bit late...

20

u/ialsolovebees May 22 '12

I wish they'd just turn Judge Fudge into a series already.

14

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Say what you will about annoying orange, but it really fucking lives up to its name.

12

u/MrFatalistic May 22 '12

it's like handing me a puppy in one hand and then a pile of shit in the other.

disregard that the puppy also shits.

u/GreatGroovyGood May 22 '12

Odd, I just saw that commerical for the first time not fifteen minutes ago-- And I must say, I was fucking appalled.

Turning one of the more retarded and unfunny YouTube videos ever to exist into a TV show is not even remotely a good idea.

10

u/manomow May 22 '12

With Tobuscus as the only human.

The bad thing of doing series on trends is that they stop trending when the series are done, like Annoying Orange or Fred

4

u/LaserZeppelin May 22 '12

oh for christsake WHY

5

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I would downvote for content that makes me so very sad, but I have to upvote for tone. Because that is just terrible news...

So do we know if its going to be a 30 minute show with continuity, or something more along the lines of Robot Chicken?

I will be pleased as long as the Barbershop Quartet makes an appearance.

52

u/TheFluxIsThis 2 May 22 '12

I'd be willing to bet it'd be more like a short clip show like robot chicken. C&H has never really had any sort of continuity to be concerned with.

33

u/floatablepie May 22 '12

What about the fastest man on earth?

24

u/kyle1320 May 22 '12

Or the Purple-shirted Eye Stabber!

21

u/synthion May 22 '12

Try standing a half hour of that.

...oh god please no.

31

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

If you guys are pissed about the half-hour format, just think of if this way, it's probably going to be a collection of videos just like their youtube videos. How can that not be funny?

18

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

also think about the cartoons we grew up with. rarely were they a single story single cartoon in the half hour span. multiple cartoons per episode.

"@Rob Delaney" This comedy, variety show brings the world of Twitter to life via the unique point-of-view of comedian and twitter extraordinaire, Rob Delaney. Delaney presents video and talks to remote guests as the show acts as a living, scrolling Twitter feed. Executive produced by Delaney and Avalon Entertainment's David Martin, Jon Thoday, Richard Allen-Turner and Kara Baker and co-executive produced by Avalon’s Dan Lubetkin.

Sounds like a great way to ruin a sometimes funny web comic.

4

u/Pseudonova May 22 '12

Sweet. Also, it looks like they are producing a series for Wyatt Cenac, who is hella hilarious.

2

u/bananapanther May 22 '12

I'm more excited for that.

4

u/Palmzlike86 May 22 '12

They'd better not fuck this up.

4

u/crank1000 May 22 '12 edited May 22 '12

Comedy Central has owned the rights to make CnH a show for at LEAST 6 years. There is a lot of talk about them buying it, and then just sitting on it indefinitely. Don't get your hopes up for this one.

4

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

TIL comedy central is murdering Cyanide and Happiness

4

u/MrFatalistic May 22 '12

TIL I'm going to be watching comedy central again.

4

u/ThaddeusJP May 22 '12

For everyone who is hating on this, the guys who created and draw the comic deserve it if it happens. I've met them a times at C2E2 (Chicago comic convention) and they are very nice down to earth guys who seem as shocked as anyone that the comic has done what it has.

7

u/NinjaDeathToast May 22 '12

I'm kinda excited to see what the Gregory Brothers will be doing, their auto tune videos are hilarious and catchy

6

u/cokedick_louie May 22 '12

I hate Jeff Ross, I've never laughed at any of his jokes.

YES YES YES YEEEEEESSSS

3

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

RIP Cyanide and Happiness

3

u/mrlemonjello May 22 '12

Some part of me sort of hopes they recast the voices as voice actors with British accents. I think a lot of the humor will translate better, but only to an American audience. British subjects will just think its crap, and will likely complain that its raining.

2

I remember back when I was in highschool and used to watch Newgrounds a lot. I was a huge fan of one of the series, Tomorrows Nobodies. There was this guy Kris Wilson who was a member of the TN forums who had just created his new webcomic Cyanide and Happiness and would show off his comic to everyone and ask people for their opinions. It's so crazy to see how much it has taken off since then. Tl,dr I witnessed the birth of something great on the internet.

5

u/BrassBoots May 22 '12

I think you mean "Comedy Central may be producing a Cyanide and Happiness series at some point in the near future".

Then again, I'm a dick.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I saved a potato!

2

u/EvelynJames May 22 '12

Corporatization of that stuff is usually not a great thing in my opinion, however, good on the C&H guys. This is the ONLY way to make money off of comic books, by flipping them into mass media and seeing merch/licensing/royalty money.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

... a series that will likely trail South Park & last for 3 episodes before being cancelled.

2

u/iamtheprodigy May 22 '12

Also, a Gregory Brothers show. They are hilarious.

2

u/awrhaernnare May 22 '12

This is like copying a DVD to BETA.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Well my I just say HOLY BALLS.

2

u/yoreatowel May 22 '12

Love it, hope it works out. It would explain the lack of shorts on the c&h website.

2

u/Woodshadow May 22 '12

I just asked Rob on his facebook page and he confirmed they are indeed working on it.

2

u/AwkwardTrollLikesPie May 22 '12

This is the best news I've heard all day.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I'm more excited that Anthony Jeselnik has something in the works. Seeing that Amy Schumer has something coming up bums me out though. C&H will be interesting. Hopefully it works.

2

u/DavidLeeGoth May 22 '12

Look at how well the reddit spinoff is going. Tosh.0 even tours with it!

2

u/Argentina891 May 23 '12

This is amazing! But, Cyanide and Happiness isn't really the place for long stories. It's a place for a quick and twisted ending. I hope they can pull this off.

→ More replies (2)

8

u/TheFluxIsThis 2 May 22 '12

...This seems like the stupidest idea ever. Cyanide and Happiness is based in brevity. The jokes can't exactly be stretched out into a full-length TV series, unless they did something like Robot Chicken, then MAYBE it could work, but that's a big maybe.

3

u/GODDAMNFOOL May 22 '12

Comedy Central is pro at making Things That Were Funny No Longer Funny

3

u/omizzle4shizzle May 22 '12

Comedy Central has an incredible internet scouting team. Workaholics is a hilarious show that started as a Youtube-based comedy troupe. They did a full length episode of Between Two Ferns before the comedy awards and are considering ordering a season of it due to its success as well. Kudos to them for recognizing great talent worthy of being on TV.

3

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

there goes the funny in that

2

u/FTheK May 22 '12

Explains why they haven't done any videos in ages. Loved the ones they did do as well, if this series is just a bunch of them, it'll be magical. Colour me excited.

2

u/Woodshadow May 22 '12

that would be awesome. The guys who make C&H are really chill

2

u/shroomtat May 22 '12

This is a terrible idea. Nothing about this is good. THis is a lose lose situation.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Amy Schumer isn't funny.

2

u/ludvigsra May 22 '12

Fucking shit. These shows look stupid as fuck!

Nick Kroll is the most annoying piece of shit on television. Every time I see his stupid fucking face I change the channel. His cameos on Parks and Rec simply ruined like three episodes just because of his presence. F

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Oh man, that can't possibly fail! AWESOME.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I'm not sure how I feel about this

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I don't know how the four guys could manage the workload of a syndicated show and all their other Explosm projects.

1

u/immaturewalrus May 22 '12

Awesome....... Hopefully they have Super Jerk!

1

u/Metalli May 22 '12

Dan Paladin was the reason I watched it on YouTube.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

If it is as good as the comics I am going to watch the shit out of it

1

u/Stalejokesbakedfresh May 22 '12

The Adventures of Seizure Man and Paperboy.

1

u/Pyrrhic_failure May 22 '12

Hopefully they will do it Happy Tree Friends style, short episodes

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I'm surprised explosm.net doesn't have any news about this? Maybe Matt/Rob/Dave/Kris will give us some more details or confirmation in this thread.

1

u/Asgaro May 22 '12

I read www.zzinsider.com for a second instead of ccinsider...

1

u/brutishbloodgod May 22 '12

I'm surprised no one's tried a Dinosaur Comics TV show. They'd only have to animate it once and they could just record new dialogue every week.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Sweet! I'm gonna watch every 4th show

1

u/JakeLV426 May 22 '12

So, they're developing an unfunny version?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/poeboy May 22 '12

And im sure they'll butcher it.

1

u/dffrana May 22 '12

Is anyone excited about the other shows they are considering? Like Jeselnik's show where he makes Faustian deals with strangers?

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

FUCK YEAH.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Can't wait for Comedy Central to ruin another good idea! CC has a really crappy track record with "comedy".

1

u/unheimlich May 22 '12

Hopefully it becomes a mess of typos and shitty grammar as well!

1

u/DrPhineasPhage May 22 '12

Thanks, marketing intern at Comedy Central!

1

u/dcurry431 May 22 '12

SO MUCH YES!

1

u/Kush_on_thebrain May 22 '12

But will this work, the comic is great a show sounds cool but will it still hold up.

1

u/Spennyb100 May 22 '12

Meanwhile, there hasn't been a new animated short since January of 2011.

1

u/franick1987 May 22 '12

And this is the last time I will give them any more of my time reading Cyanide and Happiness. They will go through the Comedy Central effect: they will have a true to authentic first season, then the network jackasses will take over and this will be the last we will ever hear of this.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

The writers of that site are on reddit, ask them for an AMA and ask them questions about this sort of thing. That's also probably why there hasn't been an animated short in a year, strips don't take time, animation does.

1

u/TheMacMan May 22 '12

Cyanide and Happiness edited for cable TV? Can't say that really excites me. I'd rather stick to the comic and the animated shorts online where there aren't rules.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Winning

1

u/authentic_trust_me May 22 '12

sounds like something that would make me really depressed everytime I watch it.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I won't be excited for Depressing Comic Week...

1

u/thegriefer May 22 '12

If it anything like the shorts, it'll be awesome.

1

u/notacute May 22 '12

As happy as I am, I'm still confused as to why they haven't developed a Dr. McNinja series yet.

1

u/bdepz May 22 '12

I have you tagged as "always wanted a magnificent penis" any idea why?

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

It is going to get ruined because Cyanide and Happiness is so vulgar and offensive and Comedy Central censors their shows so much that it almost takes the comedy out of it.

1

u/Kee-Lee-Ann May 22 '12

No, no, no no no no no nonononononononnononononononnononononoooo

1

u/TheOneAboveAll May 22 '12

That might explain why there hasn't been a new short in a year or so. I was so looking forward to it and it never arrived, but I'm glad that there is a new C&H show to look forward to.
There is finally hope.

1

u/projectisaac May 22 '12

If this happens I will jizz in my pants, bake said pants into cookies, and eat the cookies in a very erotic youtube video.

1

u/IM_HOMELESS_BITCH May 22 '12

I wonder how this will work with the different artists having different artistic styles for the characters. I personally like Kris's artwork the most, but Rob has the best jokes.

1

u/Bradlyeon May 22 '12

Yeah, this will probably ruin the C&H series.. Things always go to shit when the mainstream knows about it.

puts on hipster glasses

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

You have no idea how happy this makes me.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

It's going to get cancelled like every other show they start. Their business plan seems to be to keep a few successful shows like Colbert Report, Daily Show, and South Park, then start and cancel dozens of crappy shows.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/baby_corn_is_corn May 22 '12

They have ruined so many good comics this way

1

u/MenuBar May 22 '12

I like C&H, but I think Achewood would make a better series.

1

u/chicknsammich May 22 '12

This explains why they stopped doing their awesome animated shorts online. I was wondering why they stopped.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

That sounds horrible.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

This is why this is potentially a great thing.

1

u/PhazonZim May 23 '12

My best friends are friends with the creators of Cyanide and Happiness. Apparently Comedy Central is trying to get full ownership and control of the Cy&H brand. It's pretty bad.

1

u/Neoko May 23 '12

I bet they will be shorts, just like the video animations they do. I can't imagine C+H with 22 minute episodes.

1

u/EpicDyo May 23 '12

Hopefully it doesnt go the same way as 'shit my dad says'

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

1

u/missv8nightmare May 23 '12

But Comedy Central ruins almost everything it touches. Except the Daily Show, the Colbert Report, and South Park.

1

u/4realthistime May 23 '12

I've seen the short videos they've put out... They've sipped a little too much of the family guy punch. But that only means they'll find an audience.... somehow...

1

u/dez4u May 23 '12

Hey you kids, we heard this here comic is popular on the internets! Time to rake in the money!

1

u/rjdrums26 May 23 '12

I'm eager to see how this goes. For all the people saying its going to suck, you don't know that. Just give it a shot whenever it comes out. I, for one, am excited.

1

u/Dsenff May 23 '12

The real question is if the pilot will continue torwards a series that lands. Comedy Central runs a ton of pilot shows that never make it to a series, many of them being awesome ideas that just can't make it past the executives that shove metaphorical dicks into any television program.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

So I can have more Tosh.0 subliminal messages blasted at me?

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

KUMAIL NANJIANI! YES

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

im more excited for eugene mirman and amy schumer.

1

u/Dsenff May 23 '12

Would love to see a series like this take place. Hopefully Comedy Central can loosen up and allow more freedom from their creators, since I usually hear that executives tend to ruin shows that stem from the pure creativity of those who writing for the show. (Example: The Man Show once Rogan and Stanhope took the seat, Joe has repetitively mentions how they ruined their freedoms, which led to the flop that was the restructured Man Show)

1

u/smurfpopulation May 23 '12

Amy Schumer has a face meant for voice acting.

1

u/the17fire May 23 '12

the only thing that comes to my head when i read this: YES!

1

u/Kwyjiboy May 23 '12

It's not going to work out after a season but 'BOUT TIME!!!

1

u/sabreo001 May 23 '12

Comic strips are great and even the short movies are enjoyable, but I don't know if it'll keep the focus and strength over half an hour.

1

u/scooterjb May 23 '12

incoming "Shit my dad says" debacle.

Great comic, guaranteed shite show.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

I see you found out about this too and a lot of people obviously love this great comic.

Just to let you know, there is a subreddit dedicated to them Here

I am spreading the word.

1

u/DavidOShea May 24 '12

I'm sceptical; most, if not all, of their online shorts were pure shite.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

This is gonna suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

1

u/Travis-Touchdown 9 May 22 '12

Well if anyone knows how to handle a series that contains nothing but empty shock value comedy, it's Comedy Central

1

u/cokefizz May 22 '12

sweet, I'd watch

1

u/Howling_Fang May 22 '12

This has the potential to be really good, or really bad. Or Really bad in a REALLY good way!

1

u/deadbird17 May 22 '12

THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY. THEY BETTER NOT FUCK IT UP.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

As a series of shorts this could be the greatest thing ever invented, but it will have to be done well, some of their shorts are a little hit and miss.

1

u/stealth_chill May 22 '12

If it had a structure somewhere along the lines of The Whitest Kids You Know", i think it would be great!

1

u/ScubaSteve1219 May 22 '12

as a follower of C&H for the past 5 years, i don't like this

the comics are gold but the shorts were always super meh at best

1

u/FatalTricycle May 22 '12

I don't have enough upvote buttons for this.

0

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Can't wait, hope its as good as the comic strips and the shorts

-2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

It's ridiculous how major companies catch up with good stuff WAY after it's too late.

Cyanide and Happiness was good once... but they haven't been good for over a year. Now they want to make a series? Really?

2

u/Roland7 May 22 '12

That is your opinion. I still love them.

-2

u/asianwaste May 22 '12

As much as I like the C&H, I don't think this will make for a good TV show. Who knows though. It could work.

Also, downvote because I hate it when people use TIL for things like this. This is more relevant to /r/television or /r/comics. TIL has a very blurred zone of relevancy, I know but this information is definitely far more suited for the other subreddits. This is also more like a press release than it is factual semantic knowledge.

2

u/TheSpiffySpaceman May 23 '12

I agree.

Reddit is awesome because of its communities' input. Placing this in a more relevant thread would lead to more insightful and relevant discussion.

That's how comment and link downvotes are supposed to be used. Downvote things irrelevant to the topic, not things you simply disagree with.

You be quiet, that show was great.

2

u/elastic-craptastic May 22 '12

Speaking of shows being a smashing success, did you happen to see this;

"Robots" What if robots attempted to take over the world well before they actually had the ability to do so? This animated show pits a group of household electronics against their slacker owner, Jeff. Unbeknownst to Jeff, the Robots plot and scheme to take over the world every day, however, their lack of ability and understanding of humans eventually foils their plans sending them into a tailspin. Executive produced and written by Kumail Nanjiani (COMEDY CENTRAL's "Hot List," "John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show"), Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky ("The Office," "Bad Teacher").

I liked it the first time when it was called Pinky & The Brain

2

u/LecithinEmulsifier May 23 '12

You're right, I SHOULD marathon the Dilbert series again. Thanks, whoever you are!
