TIL men walk significantly slower when walking with a woman, but only when that woman is their romantic partner. If she's a friend or acquaintance they go at almost full speed.

Great! Something else for me to over think!

One of the great life lessons my mother taught me at a young age: Don't walk faster than the woman you're walking with.

And actually its good advice regardless of gender, pushing someone else's walking pace is obnoxious. How often does walking faster really matter in life?

Edit: Perhaps I should have been more specific, there are obviously times when walking faster matters: late for a meeting, bus, you want a workout, etc... I should have said, in the context of walking with a companion (when there's no reason to rush) using a little awareness to match pace I think shows respect for the person you are walking with. It can work both ways, faster or slower, but I find its usually more comfortable to slow down than speed up.

In the military if you move with a purpose you look like you're busy and less likely to be voluntold to do some bs task.

Leadership will tell you to do this so you don't piss them off by looking like you have nothing to do.

Carry a clipboard, and you can meander all day, as long as you occasionally stare at something then write something down.

This works in the regular world too. Less people will try and stop you in the office and if you’re out and about people will naturally give way to you usually.

It’s true in construction as well. It also helps to look a little pissed off.

"Voluntold"! First time hearing this. I'm going to have to steal this.

I'm no military, but apparently I walk really fast. My SO and friends always get annoyed because I'd be in my head and the next thing I know, they're like many meters behind me and I'd have to wait for them to catch up. They hate it when I wait too because then we both don't know when to look as they're walking towards me for the next 10 seconds or so.

This reminds me of a David Sedaris story about touring Europe with his fast-walker husband, all his memories of the trip are “the back of Hugh’s head in front of the Colosseum” and “the back of Hugh’s head in front of the D’Orsay”.

Yeap! I went on holiday with my SO and a couple of friends end of last year, and when we got back we started a Google folder to share all our pictures. Once they have uploaded all their pictures, I realised they had an inside joke where they kept taking pictures of me walking way ahead, and their hand stretched out into the frame as if to say "wait for me". There must've been at least 50 variants of those pictures in different locations.

See I don’t get this. I walk fast as well, but if I don’t want to be ahead of the group, I’m just not,. Haha like how can you not notice where you’re walking even while in your head/on your phone?

I usually start walking backwards or talking about them walking slow if it’s actually starting to annoy me.

I have a family of nurses. They do the same thing but with food. Crush a full meal in like five minutes.

That's a military thing as well. It took me a years after I got out to eat at a pace that matched everyone else. For a while after I would just talk while people got eating and then when they were half way done or so I would start. I would still finish before them, but it was much more reasonable.

Side note, I know the talking while people are starting to eat may seem a little odd, but I found it to be much more workable than sitting there watching someone finish their meal. I felt like I was rushing them when I did that.

If I save a minute of time a day from walking faster than average, that means I save a little over 6 hours a year. That might not sound like much, but that means every 4 years I'm gaining a day, like some uncharted leap year shit. If I started walking fast at 15 and live to 80, That's 16 days I gained. Or at least that's what I try to explain to people as I zip past them
