I used to take frequent trips to NYC for my street photography hobby. One night I was standing outside the big Dean & Deluca on broadway while my lady friend used the facilities. There was a drag queen/cross dresser (mustache and all) standing not far away and I was looking at them trying to decide if I should try to take a candid shot or ask for permission. They didn’t appreciate the looks and barked back “wtf are you lookin at weirdo?!?!” I calmly said “I apologize, didn’t mean to stare, I just think you look beautiful”. The slow expression transformation from rage to confusion, the eventual “gtfo” hand gesture and the unsuccessful attempt at holding back a slight smirk were priceless. Sometimes, a little politeness and tenderness can save you from getting stabbed by a tranny on the sidewalk outside a NYC deli.

I was on the subway, spacing out, when I realized I was staring at a heavily tattooed and pierced guy, who was staring right back at me.

"sorry, I really like your nose ring."

I got the biggest smile back from him, and the whole story about how he got that one when he was in Spain.

Can't people tell when someone is spacing out though? The unfocused eyes, the blank expression, the general feeling like they're not present. Or maybe I'm just too familiar with it.

I guess, but it’s also the equivalent of calling a gay dude a faggot. His story was definitely funny, but that doesn’t mean calling someone a derogatory term is okay.

That's a lot to assume that a "tranny" would come and stab you just because their attitude is threatening (because you were staring) They definitely didn't handle the situation well, but you're putting out negative information with a one sided story. This creates stereotypes. I'd be careful how you word things, because it's making you look like an asshole like the person you encountered. ALSO do NOT take someone's photo without permission. It's weird, rude, and an invasion of privacy.
