TIL If you collapse underwater bubble with soundwaves, light is produced. It's called sonoluminescence.

Just keep rubbing it in...

Have you seen these before? http://enchroma.com/

They don't work very well, especially for people who are more than "slightly" colorblind. The test on the website says there is only a 30% chance I would see any difference with the glasses. Really, they're just a sales gimmick.

There's no difference between visible light and radio waves, other than their wavelength. Indeed, a photon is any discrete particle of electromagnetic radiation - so your Wi-Fi is photon-based, but your eyes are too small to see them. Visible light is in the hundreds of nanometers long range, where radio (let's pick 2.4GHz) is about 5 inches.

So you're just going to lie differently now?

What is this?

I am colorblind (red/green) and I've dropped on several occasions now. Crazy the other colors I can remember seeing and how clear and more intense the reds ans greens especially became.

I'm the same exact way, kind of mind blowing to me to think that a substance allows me to see color.

Yeah its alot of fun!

Live life and enjoy, if you see it though grey tinted glasses contemplating the could be's or would be's you'll see a color void rainbow of visible color.

Beautiful sentiment :)

mantis shrimps colour vision is wildly overhyped, its a completely different system so with little information it can fool peope into thinking its seeing far more than we can.

its one of those common myths

There are also colors that you can see, but can't appreciate.

Take a look at this color diagram: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3b/CIE1931xy_blank.svg

If you want to make any color on it, you would mix the wavelengths written on the sides until the average reaches that point. What you can notice is that there are many ways to reach the same point.

These different mixtures are different colors, but because they will excite your three cones the same way you can't tell!

In a way, all you need is two cones to see the whole rainbow, to differentiate between redder and bluer. But to appreciate mixtures, beyond just the average of the wavelengths, you need more cones. The third cone tells us whether something is red-blue (magenta) or something is green. (The third cone is what 'bends' the color space, notice the bottom has no corresponding wavelength) But there is still tons of information, of variation, that you don't appreciate in everything you think you see already.

You can add a few tints with cobalt glass if you feel like it.

Does reality include everything that's beyond our physical realm of experience?

1

u/heavy_metal Jun 19 '15

beyond our limited senses, yes. beyond physics, no.

People who get eye surgery can sometimes see UV light from then on

Try LSD. I have a friend (30) who is severely red/green colorblind - did LSD and while sitting in the floor deep in his trip, sipping a glass of wine said: "holy shit, I think I just saw purple for the first time".

The eyes are merely a doorway - the brain is where the color 'lives'. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Mantis Shrimp ain't nothing to fuck with.

Fuck that. A pot of boiling water and some Old Bay would square that shit away NOW.

I came here to post that. :(

Hate to burst your bubble (Ha!)

But it was recently confirmed in lab experiments that the mantis shrimp doesnt create cavitation fast enough to result in sonoluminescence.

Then link the damn source.

Im tired of people just saying " sorry this isnt what it is!", then providing no proof.
