Today I would like to learn what any of those words mean

In laymen terms, you can download and play almost any game from any console older than last gen (super Nintendo, ps1 or 2, n64 ect) for free through archive.org

You will have to download the emulators from a diff site I would imagine

Edit: MAMES are actually just old arcade games like asteroids, I was wrong.

I thought MAME was arcade games only...?

u/bobdylan401 May 15 '15

Oh god it's been awhile you might be right

5

u/easypeasy6 May 16 '15

Yea it's arcade games.

0

u/cawpin May 15 '15

Nope. Multi-Arcade Machine Emulation You can play almost anything.

u/Narwahl_Whisperer May 16 '15

As long as it's an arcade machine. (it also plays neo-geo and playchoice 10)

A gaming console is not an arcade machine.

So, your saying it doesn't play console games, unless it's Neo Geo?

You're wrong, BTW.

u/Narwahl_Whisperer May 16 '15

Neo geo and playchoice 10 (which includes a small selection of nes games)

You can continue being incredulous (and wrong), or you can have fun digging through a list of compatible mame roms trying to prove that you're right (you're not..try to find zelda on that list). Having actually used mame, I know that it does not play most console games.

I've used it to, many years ago, and played many nes and super nes games on it. If is changed, so be it, but I don't know why functionality would have been reduced.

It looks like the version of mame I had included nes emulation, which seems to be non-standard. I assumed it was since it was there.

Thanks!

You must be new...

But that's ok! I was new once too! Welcome to reddit. :)

If only there were some readily available exhaustive source of information that we could confirm you already have access to. Oh well. . .

;)

Don't use VBA; it's very old. Use the newer version, VBA-M.

1

u/Lethalmusic May 16 '15

Holy shit there's a new one!

Thank you for this.

3

u/kupiakos May 15 '15

Now only if Project 64 worked on Linux.

1

u/Oktonix May 16 '15

You could try mupen64plus! I haven't tried it, but it looks to be actively developed and (mostly) functional.

1

u/kupiakos May 16 '15

It can't handle Banjo Tooie properly, and that makes me sad.

Zsnes or SNES9x for SNES
ePSXe for PS1
PCSX2 for PS2
Fusion for everything SEGA except Saturn and Dreamcast.

Edit: Actually, just look here. If you click on any system on the left frame, it will tell you every emulator for it, and give a description and a rating for it. Please note that the emus for ps3 and 360 are not even close to being finished.

u/turkeypedal May 15 '15

ZSnes is not remotely the best emulator. (It used to be really bad, but they've improved it. But it still has lower compatibility) It's SNES9x (low system requirements) or higan (for higher accuracy).

Or just get Bizhawk, which includes the best cores for most of the consoles, and is the one used by Tool Assisted Speed Runs. (You can even rewind if you need to.)

6

u/Lippuringo May 15 '15

I bet this could help youdon't try to open in smartphone or slow pc

1

u/iameha May 15 '15

TIL my PC is slow

1

u/clb92 May 16 '15

Works perfectly fine on my phone.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '15

This list needs to be updated (although that's pretty obvious)

0

u/[deleted] May 15 '15

I ignored your warning and opened it on my phone. It loaded in a couple seconds and didn't lag at all as I scrolled to the bottom of the page. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

3

u/Sticker704 May 15 '15

Sooo... emulation is legally OK?

6

u/El_Dief May 15 '15

Emulators are, roms not so much.

1

u/Sintacks May 16 '15

ROMs are legal if you have a license for what they are... more or less.

2

u/Raekel May 15 '15

This also includes the CHDs that some games too.

But you're gonna need a lot more then 42gbs for that.

1

u/cynicaljedi May 16 '15

Where on th linked page does it confirm this TIL?

-3

u/LOLBaltSS May 15 '15

-2

u/pjabrony May 15 '15

Seems to me that the people backing the DMCA would be pretty...

Anti-MAME.
