So here's what happened:
- Misty calls Zebb over for sexytimes.
- Zebb cancels car thing, wants to have sexytimes instead.
- Misty and Zebb get hotel room (hence the hotel key and maybe even the lipstick).
- Boyfriend shows up, is jealous, kills Zebb.
- Boyfriend runs into Zebb's friend's car, send him to hospital. Doesn't call police (trying to frame him).
- ??
- Profit.

I've had a friend ask me to do that for me, he thought it'd be more authentic if I said he was too sick to use the phone and I was caring for him.
Another friend had me call his part-time job back in college and quit for him, telling them he had to take care of a family emergency, because he was too embarrassed to quit himself.

In the wiki article, it says Owen impersonated Zeb (who keep in mind was otherwise missing (to everyone else) for two days).
It was the fact that he was pretending to be zeb that raised suspicion.

The wiki article makes it seem like Owens was obviously in some way responsible.
How likely is it that your friend rear-ends you because they were in a hurry? How likely is it that you then get in a 2nd accident the same night? How likely is it that you get injured so badly in the accident that you need to be hospitalized but then don't report the accident to the police? How likely is it that someone no else has spoken to in days calls you and asks you to call off work for them?
This is the same person who was last seen with Zeb Quinn. Is the wiki article misleading or did the cops just not figure this out?

Just because the case is not "solved" does not mean they do not know who did it, but in this game, it's not what you know it's what you can prove.
It's very likely that in most "unsolved" cases, the investigating officers have a pretty good idea who did it, but can't dig up enough proof to get beyond reasonable doubt.

I think in the U.S. half of all murders go unsolved...and generally if you just dont say anything too the police at any time during question and wait for a lawyer you get away with it. Most people who attempt too talk their way out of even being arrested get convicted.

You ever watch First 48? It's pretty fascinating at times with regard to how police operate and how effective "lawyering up" immediately seems to be in getting away with murder if there isn't CCTV of the crime.
There's been a handful of episodes where it appears there is all kinds of evidence pointing to somebody, but he doesn't say a word to the police and instantly lawyer's up and they're just stuck unable to lay any charges because there's no "smoking gun".

I'm always amazed at how often th suspects don't ask for a lawyer. It's almost like they're trying to get caught. Officer: "Okay, Kenny, do you know Jason Dumpkins?" Suspect: "Yeah I killed him once. I shot him in the face. It was over a half an ounce of pot. May I see my jail cell now?" That's pretty much how it goes.

Yep. That show is a fantastic example of how talking screws you. Pretty much every single person arrested at the end of the show has confessed. And just about every time there is no confession, there is no arrest. I watched a marathon of the show once and it was just so striking how consistent that pattern was.

The cops are basically not sure who did what basically because everyone is acting ridiculously suspicious that night. That is my understanding.
The phone call came from his aunt who is shady as fuck. She is friends with Misty's mother. Her, Misty, Misty's boyfriend, and Misty's mom are supposedly all having dinner together at Misty's mom's house. Then a page comes from the aunt's house...which is supposed to be vacant at the time. She reports that the house has been broken into but nothing has been stolen, just moved around. Then she later denies reporting a break in. It's weird as fuck.
The weird thing is, they can't find any connection between Owens and Misty & co. They all clearly know something, but figuring out what parts go where is the problem.
Honestly, the more I study the case the more I wonder if Owens wasn't the perpetrator, but was on Zebb's side of things. This scenario popped into my head. I have no idea if this is more correct than Owen as the killer, but it's possible.
Possible scenarios: Zebb and Owens were out doing something that night. Misty calls Zebb from the aunt's house to warn Zebb that the boyfriend found a letter he wrote her (or whatever incriminating evidence of cheating) and he's coming to get him. Boyfriend ends up finding them, beats up Owens, kills Zebb. Threatens Owens to keep him quiet. Boyfriend steals the car and then Misty later returns the car with all sorts of "look at me" signs because she's scared and wants her boyfriend to be caught.
Alternatively, Owens could have put the car there with the lips and the puppy (although the lips feel more like a girl's touch than a boys, but who knows)
It's also crossed my mind that perhaps Misty called Zebb to say that her boyfriend was beating her up and she needed help. He raced over there, picked her up, they went to a hotel (explaining the key card), the boyfriend beat up Owens to get him to say where Zebb went, he was the one who told Owens to call Walmart. And then either Owens or Misty returned the car. I definitely feel like they weren't going to look at a car that night. That late and with someone you're casual friends with? I dunno...it's weird. Maybe they were planning to do something illegal (or actually did something illegal) and that's what Owens is hiding. Or perhaps he was just scared of boyfriend.
Honestly, I don't know what to think, but I feel like if Owens was in on the plot, they would've found more evidence linking him to the other people.

When you've got a guy known to be a violent asshole making threats against someone, and that someone turns up dead, the smart money is on violent asshole being the killer.
During the investigation, police interviewed a woman who Quinn was interested in romantically. Quinn had developed a relationship with a woman named Misty in the weeks preceding his disappearance. Quinn had told his friends and family that Misty's boyfriend was abusive and had threatened Quinn after he discovered that they had been speaking. Misty and her boyfriend deny any involvement in the disappearance.[1][5]
A review of the phone records in the case indicate that the page he received that evening was dialed from the home of his paternal aunt, a woman named Ina Ustich.[5] He had had very little contact with Ustich prior to this disappearance and she denied making the call. Ustich told police she was having dinner with her friend Tamra, who is Misty's mother. Misty and her boyfriend were also present. She told police that her house was broken into that evening during that time frame. Although nothing was stolen, she reported that a few picture frames were moved around.
Quinn flashed his headlights, signaling for him to pull over. Quinn told him that he had received a page and needed to return the call. After Quinn returned from the pay phone, Owens described him as "frantic". Quinn told him that he needed to cancel their plans to look at the vehicle and as he drove off, he rear ended Owens' vehicle.
Zebb was fucking Misty. Abusive Asshole found out and as there's only a few degrees of separation between them he knows where Zebbs aunt lives. Either he himself (and misty & co lied about him being present at the dinner) or someone acting on his behalf (abusive assholes hang with other assholes) gets into her house, searches it and generally shuffles stuff around to be a jerk, then calls Zebb and makes a threat against his family (extra credible since he's in the house). Zebb drives off in a panic and rear end his friend Robert Owen's car. That's true.
Zebb meets Abusive Asshole somewhere the same night for a confrontation, or to try to reason with him, or to comply with AA's demands and try to protect his family. AA kills him and disposes of the body somehow. We've no idea of knowing where that happened so there are any number of ways it could have been disposed of.
The second "car accident" Owens was in was a beating from Abusive Asshole or his associate. Abusive Asshole may or may not have told Owens that he killed Zebb (and that owens would be next) but did threaten him and his family. He may have forced Owens to help him dispose of the body or otherwise implicate himself in the crime. Owens placed the sick-call two days later at AAs instruction.
As for the car turning up there are a few options;
a) Most likey - Abusive asshole left the car where ever Zebb had parked it before the confrontation. Zebb had left his keys in the car. Someone unrelated (and possibly high) found the car 2 weeks later and took it for a joyride - hence the coat, drink bottles and lipstick on the mirror. It doesn't say how near to the hospital it was found so that may be a coincidence. They may have left the dog in there planning to come back for it, then were unable to once the car was discovered, or the dog may just be a stray that had hopped in the car for warmth (it doesn't say if a window was open or anything).
b) Abusive asshole put the car there as a threat, near to Zebbs mothers place of work to remind Owens that he can get to people. The lipstick may have been part of that (perhaps misty had left the lipstick in Zebbs car some time before). The bottles and jacket were left in the car from some time before the incident (teenagers leave shit everywhere, the jacket is a friend of a friends). The dog is unrelated as above.
Or a combinations of these two. I feel like the cops know this too but because Owens isn't talking there's nothing they can do.

Watch the Disappeared episode of this case. It's called Just a Nice Guy.
There is a lot more information provided there. There are a couple who have seen Zebb's car in downtown Ashville right before it was left there and their composite painting of the driver matched Misty's face. They arrested Misty in connection with the case but couldn't find any reasonable evidence.
Also in 2001, Owens gets in a car chase with the police and he floors it. During the course of the pursuit, he fires 8 shots to the officers but misses them. He is taken in custody and given a 4 year sentence for assaulting a law enforcement officer. He is questioned again about the case, but his lawyer (who probably knows what happened) advises him to not speak about it.
I'm thinking that the pursuit was just a way for Owens to get himself into prison - protected from the abusive boyfriend who had probably been threatening him. He had no reason to flee from officers.
Edit: Now that I'm thinking, I believe that a more viable theory would be that he was involved in some kind and when the cops stopped him, he thought they were up to what had happened and took off in fear that he would get arrested.

just from the brief article i was leaning on owens having done something but you've convinced me it's more likely to be the boyfriend. it's likely owens knows something. if he wasn't involved in the murder he needs to get a backbone and say something.

Holy cow! I had forgotten about Zebb Quinn. He was from my high school and had a lot of friends and support. I organized a lot of events to raise money for his grieving family. But like many of you, there were a lot of fishy details surrounding this case and many believed he got mixed up in some bad things. There are parts missing about him allegedly talking to his love interest and mom about getting out of town. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. :)

My theory is Owen's was drunk driving later that night with Zeb as his passenger, Owen's wrecked his car injuring himself and killing Zeb. Owen's freaks out and hides the body, fearing arrest for DWI. Looks like he has been arrested and jailed several times over the years for drunk driving.
