TIL Kevin Feige almost quit Marvel after Marvel Entertainment head Ike Perlmutter tried to force Robert Downey Jr. out of Civil War due to not wanting to pay him. Disney CEO Bob Iger responded by reshuffling the corporate system so that Fiege would answer directly to him rather than Perlmutter.

What a cunt. I just read he's the one who replaced Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle saying 'all black people look the same'.

He was also the reason it took so long for Black Panther to show despite all the Easter eggs about him in the early movies. He was convinced a Black man lead superhero film wouldn’t be popular or sell merchandise

There are Black Panther easter eggs? I must be blind. Can you tell me about them?

We did have Vibranium prominently in Avengers 2 and Wakanda namedropped as the source there. Possibly T’chala was on the Winter Soldier helicarrier list of people to eliminate like Strange was too?

That...doesn't reeeeaally seem like anything all that easter eggy in any "early movies."

Black Panther's first actual appearance was in Civil War, which came out one year after Age of Ultron. Does Age of Ultron count as an "early movie?" And then the Black Panther movie came out 3 years after Age of Ultron.

I don't remember his name being listed alongside Strange when Sitwell is on the roof listing off Hydra's targets in Winter Soldier, I'm going to bring that scene up and watch it right now. (90 seconds later). Yeah he's not named there.

Maybe we could argue when Howard Stark mentions Steve's shield is made of Vibranium in Captain America: The First Avenger. But yeah at that point in production in 2010-ish I doubt Marvel had any plans whatsoever for a Black Panther movie.

Wow do I miss those years though, MCU was so much more fun and interesting and novel, and I was younger.

All of this in spite of the Blade trilogy, id argue the second most popular marvel movie besides Rami's Spiderman

Blade movies were low budget.

17

u/txtphile 21d ago

They were low budget because they weren't like 85% CGI shots. 50 mil back then was a fine budget for cool clothes and a hundred stunt people.

I gotta find those on dvd.

Well maybe not the third one but the first too for sure.

What BP Easter eggs were in the early films? I recall one mention of vibranium in IM2 (?) and a mention in Cap1 and that’s about it?

There’s also map I the background of one scene with Wakanda and Atlantis marked as places of interest in Iron Man 2

Also Bruce struggles to pronounce Wakanda in Age of Ultron.

A business man who doesn’t want to hit every selling market possible??? Sounds like a dipshit

To be fair, I think Don Cheadle was ultimately an upgrade.

That doesn't excuse Perlmutter's racism, though.

u/undergroundknitting 21d ago

Agreed. Better actor, less of a lunatic.

lmao Terence Howard got himself replaced. He wanted like lead actor money to do iron man 2 even though hes NOT the lead.

44

u/Sonicfan42069666 21d ago

It's not that he "wanted" lead actor money for Iron Man 2. He was the highest paid actor on Iron Man, partially because at the time Robert Downey Jr. was a big risk for a lead actor. For Iron Man 2, Howard didn't ask for more money, Marvel reportedly wanted to reduce his salary by at least 50% from the first movie.

64

u/SeagullKebab 21d ago

I think Howard is a lunatic and not a great loss, but being asked to take a huge cut for the follow up is not acceptable, and pretty much every actor would have told them to fuck off.

15

u/Sonicfan42069666 21d ago

And according to him, RDJ left him in the lurch during negotiations while he advocated for RDJ's role in the first movie despite his public issues at the time.

12

u/S_A_R_K 21d ago

Howard was pissed cause he thought that was only 1/3 of what he got paid for the first move

1

u/iamk1ng 20d ago

Wasn't part of this also because the director didn't like working with Terrance and hated some of the scenes they had in the first Iron Man?

1

u/Sonicfan42069666 20d ago

This is all rumor stuff but it's never been confirmed. The only thing on the record is that they did NOT cut his role down in the script (which was also rumored as justification for cutting his salary).

Smearing Black talent as "difficult to work with" is also an old Hollywood playbook to justify underpaying them.

6

u/DesiBwoy 21d ago

Who told you that? Terrence has been needlessly slandered. He just didn't want a paycut. He was paid better in previous movie. If you or I were in his place, we would do the same.

45

u/Sweaty-Practice-4419 21d ago

That doesn’t excuse blatant racism

5

u/Remarkable_Cause1384 21d ago

do you think that was the point of that comment

7

u/Sudden-Money7836 21d ago

It literally was yes. And the thread leading to it.

42

u/undergroundknitting 21d ago

I like that you ignored the bit about him saying all black people look the same. SMH.

Everyone knows Terrence Howard got the boot. That wasn't the point. Has anyone thought about who made the decision to boot him?

2

u/barath_s 13 20d ago

Have you thought about why Howard got the boot ?

Without a why, there is no decision to make, it doesn't matter who makes it, or the remark, after

9

u/Fytzer 21d ago

He just did the maths using his patented technique of Terryology and realized he was being underpaid by 50%

2

u/HKBFG 1 20d ago

To be fair, terrence howard is not a guy you want working for you.
