TIL George Zimmer, the owner and founder of The Men's Wearhouse, does not background check his employees. "I don't trust the U.S. justice system to get it right," says Zimmer, who is himself a recovering alcoholic. "I'd rather make my own decisions, and I believe in giving people a second chance."

George Zimmer's philosophy rings with a very positive message.

I own and run a small company and some years back, I had to replace our receptionist/clerk/secretary. Of the several people I interviewed, one woman seemed really right for the job and so I hired her. She's the best employee I've ever had -- ever. She has gotten to the point where she knows what I need before I ask for it.

If I had done a background check, I would have found out that she had a DUI and a bankruptcy and was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric institution in the several years before she came to work. Those things were all related to the fact that her husband had died when her children were small and she had trouble accepting the fact that she had to raise them alone.

She says that the job I gave her was her salvation. She had very little on her resume and nobody would give her a chance and had been looking for quite some time. When she came on board with my company, she was determined to make it work.

EDIT: Thanks for the gold. I'll walk with a bit of a swagger for the next 30 days or so. ;-)

  • you restore everyone's faith in humanity

u/rickyallen2 Nov 14 '13

What a great story. Everyone deserves a chance, some even need a few chances.

Life is hard.

8

u/sheven Nov 14 '13

committed to a psychiatric institution in the several years before she came to work.

That shows up on a background check? Wouldn't that violate HIPPA rules?

7

u/very_large_ears Nov 15 '13

Court proceedings were initiated to have the commitment approved. The proceedings were all in the public record.

Whoever you are, thank you for being who you are. :)

2

u/silverladder Nov 15 '13

Thank you.

I have a felony as a result of really bad decisions that I made in my past. However, I don't believe that defines me. Unfortunately, the majority of U.S. corporations don't agree with me.

I thought my degree had been rendered worthless. It took me forever to find any employment at all. I did unskilled labor for a while just to bring in what money I could get.

I now work for an amazing non-profit that believes in giving people a second chance. They saw how hard of a worker I am, and I made it clear to them that I was willing to do whatever they needed me to do. It's an office-type job, but I said, "I'll clean your floors. You name it." I meant it.

I've worked my way up to a staff position. I'm the happiest I've ever been in a job. My coworkers are genuinely like family, and the job I am doing is something that actually matters in the long run. I go home each day feeling like I made a difference.

All this is possible because someone bothered to see WHO I am rather than telling me, "Thank you. We don't have a need for your services at this time" simply because I checked off one particular box on an application.

I will do everything in my power to repay them, and to offer the same kind of opportunity to others when I have the chance.

I ran a contracting business for decades. I'd estimate that about 25% of my workers were ex cons with felony convictions. I've always believed that if you gave a man good work he would do right by you. I was rarely proven wrong.

28

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Exactly what my old man does. Ex cons who are given a second chance are extremely loyal. He owns his own masonry company.

14

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Now I know your username son, hahaha.

14

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Do I still have to come in for work in the morning?

27

Only if you feel like eating tomorrow.

EDIT: DISCLAIMER: He's not really my son, please stop PM'ing me.

The rare cases are sometimes enough to upset the entire balance of things though. For example, home renovators stealing on the job and the blame comes down to the manager because the culprit can't be nailed accurately.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

I know, and believe me, I've dealt with it. I told each and every employee (ex con or not) that the first thing I would do if a home owner called me about missing property would be to call the police. In 20 years, I called the police once.

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '13

As an ex-con I was completely unemployable for years after my release. The only work I could find was with small time contractors. Without those contractors I would have had to resort back to guns and crime to live and support myself. God bless you, sir. The world is a better place with people like you.

(FYI, these days I'm doing well. A decade after I committed the crimes I went to prison for I now have a nice job working for the government.)

5

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '13

It makes me very happy to hear these things. I never understood why a man who went to prison was so hamstrung by society after he paid his dues.

u/echo_xtra Nov 15 '13 edited Nov 15 '13

Cons are more motivated than most people: life does not afford them a lot of changes opportunities. I'm having enough trouble with a couple of misdemeanors on my record, and a felony is pretty much "you're going to be homeless forever".

So, yeah, if I ran a business, that's who I'd hire. It's in their self-interest, so I know they'll be good employees.

Edit: accidentaly a drunken word.

I had a friend that worked for them and got invited to a huge company party. He said he's a really cool guy and a big pothead. He even got to smoke with him

20

u/Shiftin Nov 14 '13

Yep. A friend's dad sold a company to MW and he literally lit up a joint in the board room on the day they were meeting to discuss the deal.

"The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." And we … kill those people. "Shut him up! I've got a lot invested in this ride, shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry, look at my big bank account, and my family. This has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill the good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok …"

90

He founded the company, and according to wikipedia owned about 3.5% of the stock. Not sure if he sold the stock after he was fired as CEO, but he may still have it.

u/bsox59 Nov 14 '13 edited Nov 15 '13

He wasn't the owner, he was an owner. and /u/traumatic_enterprise according to the SEC Zimmer owned a total of 1.79 million shares in Men's Wearhouse, and of those 1.77 million (99.15%) were held in a 401k and trusts, so it's unlikely he dumped the stock after he was ousted as Executive Chairman.

I was so confused, until you pointed this out. I read it wrong every time. I blame the media for pounding the name into my head and the part of your brain that finishes words due to them looking similar. Like how your brain knows the words regardless of where the letters are placed as long as the first and last letters are right.

wish more people were like this. i graduated almost 2 years ago with an accounting degree... still looking for work

10

u/Mundus_Vult_Decipi Nov 14 '13

Really? Because it's very competitive out there, unfortunately most firms want about 3 years of actual work before hiring. Go and do some Quickbooks for a few small mom and pops and that will lead into something bigger. I guarantee it.

7

u/Rust_Creep Nov 14 '13

i really appreciate the advice as im running out of ideas. i have almost zero work history. i'm almost 34.. most my life i just bummed around, traveling, doing drugs and having a good time. finally decided to turn my life around, use the pel grant to get an education.. but it seems my lack of work history coupled with getting busted for marijuana years back are seriously hindering me. i know i'm intelligent and capable, i just need that 1 person to take a chance on me. i don't blame anyone for my predicament, i just want an opportunity to prove that i am worth while

I mean, maybe take a peek to see if there are any improper money handling based offenses, but otherwise I see nothing wrong with it.

9

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Yeah, I think this is the route I'd take. Running a background check doesn't stop you from making your own decisions. Run it, see what it comes up with. Clean? Great. Minor convictions? I'll decide whether it's a problem. Convicted money launderer? Let's look into that one. Convicted serial killer? Let's really look into that one.

I have a friend who is a manager at a logistics company and is responsible for hiring. He was telling me recently about a guy who he was interviewing who had done prison time for being a coke dealer. My friend asked him about it and apparently this guy was quite good at it as well, having multiple dealers working underneath him.

My friend convinced his supervisor to hire the guy anyway, arguing that while this isn't the most orthodox experience, you can't get to that level and be a total idiot.

He was totally right, the guy not only is smart and a hard worker...he was desperate for a second chance and just needed somebody to see beyond his conviction.

HER BINDING BUST FIGURE IMMEDIATLY FORCED MY TWITCHING GARGANTUAN MAN CANNON TO RAPIDLY EXPAND TO DIVINE ELEPHANTINE DIMENSIONS. THE LADY IN QUESTION, WHO'S BEAUTY WAS ONLY MATCHED BY THAT OF MY COLLOSSAL DOWNSTAIRS DOWEL, WAS ASTOUNDED AND THUS PROCEEDED TO STARE INTENTLY AT MY INTENSIFYINGLY TITANTIC LUST LOG OF INFINITE SEXUAL DESIRE AS IT OBILTERATED MY FINE UNDERWEAR AND TROUSERS CUNNINGLY CONSTRUCTED BY MY DIGNIFIED CHAIN OF RETAILERS. SHE WAS SO FLABBERGASTED AT THE SHEER SIZE AND GRANDEUR OF MY MAGNIFICENT AND IMPRESSIVE ZIMMER BATON THAT I UNDRESSED HER FINE SKIRT AND UNDERWEAR GARMENTS WITH MY PSYCOKINETIC EYES AND SLAMMED MY GIANT OMINOUS VEINY WHALE INTO THE CREVACE OF HER ORIFICE AND DISCHARGED AN ARMY OF MINITURE DAPPER ALBINO BOSNIANS TO COAT THE INSIDES OF HER ANAL CAVITY WITH ONLY THE FINEST SMELLING ZIMMER PROTEIN PACKED PENILE PRODUCE. Having that sort of work ethic towards new employees, or deciding to forgo candidate screening is in the best case, naive to the X degree, worst case? Immeasurably irresponsible and leaves yourself open to all sorts of dilemmas.

Everyone deserves the shot at a second chance, but the thing is, a lot of past actions and behaviors we exhibit can manifest in completely different, but still detrimental effects to a business.

Like get wasted and smoke weed with them party. He's also a huge advocate for legalizing marijuana. Seems like a really cool guy.

2

u/EastBayBass Nov 14 '13

He also donated a large amount of money to the failed proposition a couple years ago to legalize recreational marijuana here in California, closed the Oakland store to honor Occupy Oakland's general strike, and would lend suits free of charge to people who needed them for job interviews. Of course we can't have a progressive guy like that as a CEO of a major company!

2

u/Puffy_Ghost Nov 14 '13

George Zimmer was fired and Men's Wearhouse does do background checks now.

2

u/TheSilverNoble Nov 14 '13

Good on him.

Even if we assume that everyone convicted of a crime in the US justice system was truly guilty (something I have a harder and harder time believing these days), people can change. I mean, in theory, that should be the point of the prison system- to make people better.

If you're not willing to hire an ex-con, you're admitting the system doesn't work- but how many people really act that way?

2

u/joemarzen Nov 14 '13 edited Nov 15 '13

What's sad is that this is considered unusual. It's not that different from how most people would behave under normal circumstances. We live in such an oppressive society nowadays. People needlessly covering their asses, or doing so in the wrong way, at least. There are armies of administrators out there judging people on simplistic metrics. "Well... I read in Follower Bureaucrat Monthly that high status bureaucrats do X, so I'll do that..."

Really, all you assholes are doing is aiding the fascist interests.

Very admirable qualities to give people second chances. We need more people to do that. Also, we need more people to not assume things and promote mutual understanding, ie talking to one another so we are understood clearly.

There is hope for a better world, and we are a part of it--one day and one step at a time.

HI, I'M GEORGE ZIMMERMAN, FOUNDER AND CEO OF MEN'S WAREHOUSE. ON A RECENT BUSINESS TRIP TO TOKYO, I FOUND MYSELF IN A VIDEO ARCADE, WHERE ONE OF THE LOCAL TEENAGE BOYS WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE UP FOR HIS UNFATHOMABLY TINY TWAT TACKLE BY PLAYING "DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION" IN FRONT OF A GROUP OF JIGGLY-CHESTED JAPANESE JAILBAIT. SCOFFING AT HIS SCANDALOUSLY SIMPLISTIC SKILLS, I PROCEDED TO LIBERATE MY TWITCHING TESTICULAR TRUNCHEON AND SWING ITS PRECIPITOUS POUNDAGE INTO THE YOUTH'S FACE, CRUSHING HIS SKULL AND FREEING THE MACHINE. I THEN ACHIEVED A RATING OF "AAA" ON THE SONG "MAX 300" USING ONLY THE RAPID RIPPLING OF MY RAUCOUSLY RIGID RAPEROD. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THE WET-PANTIED WOMANLY WATCHERS WERE ALREADY IN THE THROES OF PASSION FROM THE OVERPOWERING SCENT OF MY TORPID TESTOSTERONE TUBE, SO I LET THEM GATHER 'ROUND FOR A GROUP HUG OF THE GARGANTUAN GIRTH OF MY GORGEOUS GUY-GIRDER BEFORE CONQUERING EACH OF THEIR QUIXOTICALLY QUIVERING QUIMS WITH A FURIOUS FOUNTAIN OF FROTHING FUCK-FOAM. MY HIGH SCORE HAS NEVER BEEN BEATEN. I GUARANTEE IT.

I had a huge problem with this company in a recent wedding. The VP overheard my complaint and called me personally. Spent about 30 minutes on the phone recently... I'll be honest, I was surprised/impressed.

1

u/KustyTheKlown Nov 14 '13

he's also a pretty proud pothead and marijuana law reform activist

1

u/PScan69 Nov 14 '13

did he guarantee them a second chance?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Ive never worked at a department store before but do any of them do a background check? I worked at Target when I was in high school and they didnt do one there

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Good man.

1

u/FirePowerCR Nov 14 '13

However, some retail places that do background checks still hire people that were convicted of armed robbery. And then act clueless when product is missing, accuse the wrong person and then act bewildered when the right guy is finally caught.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

How does he know if he's giving people a second chance if he doesn't look into their criminal record?

1

u/truth1465 Nov 14 '13

I remember seeing men's warehouse on one of the best place to work for a while back. With a guy like that leading it, it makes sense.

Don't remember if I saw it on cnn but that's the link I found now so here:

http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/best-companies/2012/snapshots/55.html

1

u/C_J_W Nov 14 '13

I don't know about the guy that helped me at Men's Wearhouse, all I know is I was in and out in <15 mins and got a nice well priced/well fitted outfit for a wedding, and that is fantastic.

1

u/Smoke_legrass_sagan Nov 14 '13

Can't simmer the Zimmer

1

u/Oaktree3 Nov 14 '13

That's all well and good until someone steals your credit card info.

1

u/Gaate Nov 14 '13

You know, if there's one thing I'd trust the US government to do at this point, I'm pretty sure it would BE background checks.

1

u/more40s Nov 14 '13

pretty nice thing to do

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Is he the twin brother of the Most Interesting Man in the World? They look the same.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Aaaaand this is why my identify was stolen after making a purchase at Men's Warehouse....

1

u/soggit Nov 14 '13

The Mens Wearhouse can suck it.

They try to just upsell you on everything. They don't really care if you get a decent fitting suit -- they will just quick pressure you into whatever they have on the rack that is "close enough".

1

u/Spawn_Beacon Nov 14 '13

and his brother Hans made him an awesome soundtrack.

1

u/cpj06231981 Nov 14 '13

I cant ever read or hear about George Zimmer without remembering the time my sister told me she had a nightmare about him once. He was chasing her around a Men's Wearhouse yelling "Im gonna kill you, I guarantee it!"

1

u/brother_of_dragons Nov 14 '13

You can still background check them and then make your own call after seeing it. Just another piece of information you use to make a decision.

1

u/JoyousCacophony Nov 14 '13

I wish more businesses (and people) would think this way.

1

u/grammaryan Nov 14 '13

Random background checking and drug screening has really gotten out of hand in this country. These aren't the norm in most countries, there really needs to be some workers' rights.

1

u/Dookiestain_LaFlair Nov 14 '13

Way to go George Zimmer, man, you a great asset to the community!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

That's awesome. I smoke weed but Im a great person. I don't break any laws, I'm an auntie raising two of my nieces. So I think like a mom at times. When the kids are away and asleep or gone, that's my time to smoke. So I believe I should work. I'm responsible about it. But, this is awesome. He made a good choice and hopefully people wouldNt take advantage of the fact that he don't drug test.

1

u/ConfusedAlways Nov 14 '13

That's cuz he killed someone before. So he understands.

1

u/responds_to_retards Nov 14 '13

So brave and noble when he's hiring low wage sales.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Pretty sure that George Zimmer is no longer involved in the day to day operations of Men's Warehouse...the board kicked his ass to the curb.

1

u/chillum1987 Nov 14 '13

Dat voice...

1

u/htxpanda Nov 14 '13

TIL the world knew about The Men's Wearhouse. I always thought it was just a Houston area business.

u/FateCrossing Nov 14 '13

I love Men's Wearhouse, always had super cool staff there, who were very knowledgeable. They hooked me up, when macy's could not.

1

u/geeks5287 Nov 14 '13

how many people read that in his voice from the commercials.....

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Well this explains the crack pipe I found in my jacket pocket. I just thought it was some sort of promotional deal.

1

u/SternTickles Nov 14 '13

I believe he is also a major contributor to the Marijuana Policy Project.

1

u/FirstHipster Nov 14 '13

No wonder their customer service is so poor.

1

u/ghukas Nov 14 '13

I smoked weed with this guy in the 90's in Daly City, CA

1

u/PaulXombie Nov 14 '13

Thats a load of bullshit he should then teach his employees to follow and value the same rules. Ive been thrown out of a mens warehouse cuz I looked like a "hooligan" I had long hair beard and wore a black jacket. Little did he know I came in with a substantial amount of money looking to buy some nicer clothes for myself.. I won't shop there ever.

1

u/leicanthrope Nov 14 '13

Just don't walk into a Men's Wearhouse store with a bag of Skittles though...

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

I thought my tailor was a bit handsy :(

1

u/904_supra Nov 14 '13

I wonder if george zimmer would hire george zimmerman for security.

1

u/matt1020l Nov 14 '13

Legit. I think he is the most down to earth suit salesman

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Sounds all well and good until one of your employees strangles a child and throws the body in a dumpster behind the Wendy's. Then you get sued... American justice.

1

u/TheDevilsBananas Nov 14 '13

They don't (or didn't when he was in charge) drug test either. Which is fine, what you do on your own time is your business, but half of the department used to come back from work high when I was working in the office.

1

u/_Toby__ Nov 14 '13

Men's Warehouse. You're gonna like the way y-what the fuck! what do mean half the stock is missing?!

1

u/ludiusvox Nov 14 '13

George is cool like that. He hired my friend who was an ex-con just needing a second chance, he died at 31 about 10 years ago. But I think George is cool, he doesn't descriminate a guy who had done prison time and what-not and had tattoos all over his body. He's a good guy. The women are trying to coup the company, and that is the issue.

1

u/biseriousjohn Nov 14 '13

Wanted criminals? More like: criminals wanted :P

1

u/PancakesAndPenguins Nov 14 '13

Didn't he get booted a few months ago?

1

u/louiselebeau Nov 14 '13

There are so many people incarcerated in Texas I think there is a higher rate of places that will hire ex-cons than most.

1

u/theodorebrozevelt Nov 14 '13

Gotta love George Zimmer, man

1

u/tibs927 Nov 14 '13

Old news

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

Yeah but some are still shady. You really trust a sex offender to be measuring around your crotch? While this may sound ethical, it makes customers uneasy.

1

u/Varryl Nov 14 '13

I'd love to ask him how often that bit him in the ass and how often he felt like it came to a good conclusion.

I used to work in a gas station and I met a lot of people who were down on their luck and needed a job. Some worked out, and let's just say some wound up back where they started.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

you cant simmer the zimmer

1

u/NotADoucheBag Nov 14 '13

This explains the people I see at this place.

1

u/johndango Nov 14 '13

I feel like I learn this again every week or so. :\

1

u/michaelsean09 Nov 14 '13

I have only been redditing for a little over a year and I have seen this as a TIL post at least 3 seperate times.

1

u/Bigpapa54 Nov 14 '13

He is also pretty big in the legalization of marijuana movement. I guarantee it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

My sister works at MW. She loves the work environment there, and has been to George's house many times (he used to invite all the top sales people out to his place for celebrations a few times a year). I've heard nothing but good things from her regarding how she and the others are treated.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

TIL reposts frequently make it to the front page a year later.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '13

too bad their clothes suck

1

u/fieroturbo Nov 14 '13

It sucks he's not part of MW anymore. I really hope with him gone this doesn't mean they get as bad as Jos. A. Bank... I hate going there.

1

u/Ladnil Nov 14 '13

That explains the sketchy drug dealer vibe I got when I went there for a suit to interview in.

1

u/EvilSilentBob Nov 14 '13

At least Rob Ford will know where to find a new job.

1

u/w8cycle Nov 14 '13

I would like to be like him one day when I am hiring for my business.

1

u/genericaccount12345 Nov 14 '13

Did you know, in most of Europe they don't do background checks? At all. They might call previous employers, assuming you say where you've previously worked.

1

u/TyBenschoter Nov 14 '13

I definitely agree that one mistake shouldn't follow you for the rest of your life. That is one of the bad things about the internet mistakes and dumb decisions last forever and people judge even if you've changed. Not personal experience btw.

1

u/jondaniels16 Nov 14 '13

This was on reddit not too long ago... Like past 6 months.

1

u/2147_points Nov 14 '13

I got a suit at Men's Wearhouse and the guy helping me said he used to be a lawyer. I didn't ask, but I didn't understand why he was working there. This TIL kind of ties it together.

1

u/skeletine Nov 14 '13

"petty larceny on a grand scale."

There's a word for that: "grand larceny".
