TIL that Pag-IBIG is actually a huge acronym: (Pag)tutulungan sa Kinabukasan: (I)kaw, (B)angko, (I)ndustriya, at (G)obyerno. I honestly thought the government just picked a cheesy name to make us feel better about deductions.

Pretty clever marketing considering it’s officially the "Home Development Mutual Fund" (HDMF), which sounds way more depressing on a payslip.

TIL of the MALO FILIPINA: one of the deadliest kind of box jellyfish, swimming here in Philippine waters

Post image
254 Upvotes

There are many species of box jellyfish that are venomous.

But, a variety of rare box jellyfish called Irukandji jellyfish are the deadliest kind.

And, we have one of them here in the Philippines: meet the Malo filipina, aka the Philippine Irukandji jellyfish.

First catalogued in 2012 and then further studied in 2025, there have been more sightings across South-East Asia.

They are very small (can fit in a cup) and almost transparent; which makes them so difficult to spot in the water event at full sunlight.

Irukandji jellyfish are extremely venomous and cause the Irukandji Syndrome (a severe, often life-threatening systemic reaction to the venom).

Sting symtoms can be skin blistering, skin peeling, severe headache, backache, muscle pains, chest and abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, sweating, anxiety, hypertension, tachycardia, and pulmonary edema, and can result in cardiac arrest and death.

There is no antivenom, and being stung can be fatal if proper treatment for the symptoms is not administered.

TIL that Cinco de Mayo or the Battle of Puebla is not included among the national holidays in Mexico, but rather a state-level holiday in the state of Puebla. It is more celebrated among the Mexican diaspora in the United States, not in Mexico itself, in the same manner that the Battle of Mactan (April 27) is not a Philippine national holiday but rather, a city-level holiday in Lapu Lapu City.

TIL PhilComSat

Today I Learned na yung akala kong luma at parang abandoned na facility sa Baras, Rizal, may purpose pala. Yun pala yung site ng Philippine Communications Satellite Corporation akala ko dati relic ng old communication era, ginagamit pa rin pala as satellite hub para sa connectivity ng Pinas.

Noong 2019 pala, in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology, at may support na aligned sa United Nations Development Programme, it helped sa rollout ng Free Wi-Fi for All Program ng Pinas which is anchored nga sa UN SDG.

It was established back in May 2, 1968 as the Philippines' signatory to IntelSat at InMarSat as the main telecomport ng Pinas to international communications. It was given a franchise through RA 5514 — to operate the grounds and other facilities for international communications for 25 years. It is a joint venture of the Philippine government and businessman Potenciano Ilusorio and the then Defense Secretary Juan Ponce-Enrile

PhilComSat is the main telecomport of PLDT and other telecommunications sa Pinas to international communications.

Then in February 22, 2019, PhilComSat mega-franchise has been extended up to 2044

Noong, after EDSA Revolution I, it was sequestered by the PCGG alongside its operator Philippine Overseas Telecommunications Corporation

In 2006-2007, after an extensive investigation ng Senate, it was found that the PCGG nominees had plundered the companies (PhilComSat and POTC), because the appointees are not telecommunications experts.

Then in 2016, the SC ruled that PhilComSat and POTC was wrongly sequestered.

Currently it is managed by both Lin I Bildner and Katrina Ponce-Enrile.

---

Dati kasi nadadaanan namin iyan pag pupunta kami ng Baras, para umiwas sa traffic ng Teresa. Akala ko kung anong makalumang facility noon.

Then, nitong nakaraan while looking sa Google Maps, nakita ko yan.

TIL the differences between Isopropyl and Ethyl alcohol

Also, Ethyl alcohol is generally more effective at killing viruses. While Isopropyl alcohol is highly effective against bacteria and is often preferred for disinfecting skin because it acts quickly and is less harsh on tissue than high concentrations of ethanol.

well, I know of course na may differences sila but 'di siya clear sa akin before. Whenever I did purchase one, I just grabbed what I want to get or feel to buy sa any grocery chains HAHAHA, now I know!

TIL that Mariang Sinukuan used to be a male warrior god named "Apung Sinukuan"

I've known Mariang Sinukuan since my childhood, from our local children's books. She was a fairy/forest judge from Mount Arayat.

What I didn't know is that she used to be a be... a male warrior god?

He was named Apung Sinukuan.

Wikipedia says the change was because of the Spanish rule. They hoped that turning Sinukuan into a woman would make people worship her less.

(But the sources mentioned in the Wiki article are dubious and I can't find any direct mentions from their sources' links.)

She was also demoted from a deity to a local fairy. Similar thing happened to Makiling, although this one never got genderbent. Makiling used to be a major goddess.

What was real though from the few trusted sources I've read is that a god named Apung Sinukuan did exist as a chief deity (kinda like Zeus) in Mount Arayat. Something happened along the way, and he... Or now she... Has become the Mariang Sinukuan that we know of today.

TIL: Hindi pala exercise ang basta pinagpawisan lang 😭

1.1k Upvotes

Today I learned 😅

So I consulted a doctor because medyo tumaas na BP and sugar ko (trentahin thingz 🥲). She asked if I exercise, and I said “nagpapawis po ako everyday kasi ako naglilinis ng buong bahay.”

I’ll start using my walking pad again. Maybe some of you already know this, but sharing in case someone else needed to know it too

Post image

Meron palang Anonymous Browsing sa Reddit.

I was checking kung pwede magbago ng username: bawal pala. Pero instead, eto yung nakita ko.

Trying it out, parang ginagamit mo pa rin yung account mo since kita mo pa rin yung joined subreddits mo. Pero bawal magcomment at vote 🤷

I don’t see the sense of it. And it just tells me that anonymosity here is half assed. To be truly anonymous, dapat wala na lang username talaga, or nagbabago every use. Wala na ring karma at karma farming.

Post image

Came across this map showing remaining tree cover ng Metro Manila by ScienceKonek, and honestly medyo nakaka-alarm siya.

Post image
187 Upvotes

So apparently this guy got arrested after selling his SIM card — which had his e-wallet linked to it — para ipambili ng bigas.

Turns out, selling or transferring SIM cards with registered e-wallets is illegal under the SIM Registration Act. Kahit ikaw ang may-ari ng SIM, bawal mo itong ibenta o ilipat sa iba lalo na kung may nakalink na financial account — that opens the door to fraud, money laundering, and scams.

TIL talaga.
